Can someone that knows the facts on this please fill in the blanks 20:35 - Sep 10 with 10198 viewstextbackup

Because I’m completely confused as to what I’m reading today, and appreciate some is total BS pushed by some for their own agendas and thoughts.

- a pensioner with an income of over £xxxxx will lose their £300 heating allowance.
- MPs earn £xxxxxx a year, and get an allowance of £xxxxx on top of their wage.
- MPs have voted for this, but haven’t had their own heating allowance questioned (true/false)

Thanks in advance

We’ll be good again... one day

So what’s the actual cut off for who does/doesn’t get it?

The cut off will be by the energy companies when people can't afford to pay their heating bills this winter

A few ?

There are currently 1.6 Million foreign nationals in Blighty on the old rock and roll !

Slightly more than ‘a few’.

1.6 million foreign nationals on the dole .

I love the fact there's a small village in Essex where everyone in the pub believes that every person on the dole in the UK is a Johnny Foreigner who came came over on a dinghy.

Yeah factored in there’s no mortgage.

However, £958 is the bare bones. Food, bills, possibly running a car, if not public transport costs, and on and on…

You missed Council Tax - which takes up 33% of my state pension …

I do also have a small work related pension, and won’t qualify for wfa.

Luckily I had an Economy10 meter installed when the house was renovated 10 years ago, so run round like a loony switching everything on when cheap rate hours kick in, and off again when peak rate hours start. It’s one of the reasons I’m often on here at weird hours (though I’m also a night owl).

Cheap rate is only half the price of peak rate, though I have a constant ongoing battle with suppliers who keep trying to swap the registers round and sting me at peak prices for off-peak consumption, on the basis that most households use more peak than cheap, whereas it’s the other way round for me.

Had a £1,200 refund a few months ago for incorrect charging by Octopus and Shell before them, but Octopus still kept doing it (till now I hope - after months dealing with a succession of reps , none of whom ever bothered speak with each other or read what had previously happened, a lady from complaints took over, changed the labelling, & offered a further £250 compensation). It’s incredibly time consuming and stressful, Kafkaesque scenario, but worth persisting with complaining if anyone experiences similar. Utility companies have a legal obligation to pay proper care and attention in metering and billing.

My Dad's sister, who moved to Scotland with her husband approx 50 years ago because better benefits up there - who literally between them have never done a days work in their life* are constantly on Facebook moaning about spending 'our taxes' on foreigners.

I dread to think how much of a drain they've been on the UK taxpayer

The key fact is that the UK pension is woeful - currently lagging behind something like 15 other countries in Europe including rather surprisingly Ukraine and Bosnia,

Were you a retired Spaniard who’d spent your entire working life enjoying a siesta you’d be getting a pension3x higher than the UK pension with a much lower cost of living.

Energy company profits could more than cover the amount raised by removing the allowance. While I think the allowance should be prioritised for those on low income the threshold has been set too low. There's another discussion to be had about the cost and benefits of universal v targeted support.

Unsure if I’ve posted this correctly… but there’s a whole load of claiming for energy usage on here.

It would be interesting to know how often she stays there.

Her energy bills are more than mine a month and I work at home 3 days a week.........

It doesn't really sit right does it that these MPs can claim this.

MPs are (rightly) no longer entitled to acquire a second home through Parliamentary expenses but they are entitled to rent a second home, either in their constituency or in London, depending on their circumstances.

The current situation is little different to an employee being put up in a hotel by their employee because they are away from home, and you would not expect the employee to pay the costs of heating their hotel room.

Maybe it should be means tested? A Cabinet Minister earning £68K more than a standard MP probably doesn't need it

As an example, it had crossed my mind that Labour MPs who voted for the measure should have been required by the Party to donate £300 per year to Age Concern or some similar organisation.

You can have that argument about any benefit payout. Do you give people enough to survive on, assuming mortgage is paid and no kids at home. Or should the tax payer be subsiding someone so they can afford to go on holiday, or go down the pub every weekend, etc?
My Mother lives on state pension alone and still saves enough to spend £100's on her grandchildren at Christmas.

"assuming mortgage is paid" is too big an assumption to make, if we are talking about a baseline benefit.

Many (my instinct would be the majority) of pensioner households who have no private/work pension won't have paid off a house.

That supports his theory about scrounging immigrants. Albeit they are English ones and I doubt they used a small boat to get to Scotland!
