I commented a couple of days ago that the thread was not adding to people's understanding saying I would be no longer commenting, the thread having degenerated into smears including one I took to be aimed at me.
It seems to me that people's views are just too entrenched, with old grudges to the fore, and if threads on the conflict in the Middle East are to continue, I suggest they be pulled after a couple of pages, because very little after that is constructive or informative. And I do not propose to comment on any future thread on the conflict because it is just not worth wasting my time. [Post edited 22 Sep 2024 18:06]

The willfull misrepresentation and false labelling in that particular thread reached new heights. It seems that using the abuse button to make it all go away is a new development. Absolute madness and a shame as like you say some interesting points were raised amidst the chaos. |  |

I think with one poster, he remembered something that most people either hadn’t seen or had forgotten. I actually remembered it, but only vaguely, not the exact wording, so didn’t comment. What I’m saying is that as I’ve said before, I think there’s a case for locking rather than deleting threads so that evidence remains on site.
Having said that, maybe it’s not a good look for potential advertisers, on whose living Admins’ livings partly depend, so it’s always Phil and Gav’s call of course. | |

There were certainly some rather sinister smears, but even the more straightforward ones appeared so wide as to capture anyone not on all fours with the smearer, which is not to say that a smear aimed at a particular individual is any more acceptable

Apologies, not aware of what causes the workload issues but if it's being abused, is it not something to look at? I completely understand they can't read every thread of course but just going by what the op was saying in terms of abuse reported. I try and stay away from general most of the time so not aware of the other issues that side.

I think 99% of posters are and don't/haven't, since the site's inception some 25 years ago.
Thing is that it's probably fewer than a couple of dozen people over those decades (plus a few unimportant trolls who are easily dismissed/ignored) who've disrupted the forum disproportionately in being deliberately/knowingly/uncaringly malign in their attacks on others.They've had a ripple-out effect on the tone & atmos because people angered by being falsely labelled as something despicable, are quite likely to lash back angrily, so "history" between individuals is built up; & it spirals.
Re Strikalite's moderator idea, that might necessitate employing a neutral, which perhaps wouldn't be financially viable. [Post edited 23 Sep 2024 5:37]
