So Trump is in then… on 08:07 - Nov 6 with 6363 views | StokieBlue | It's far worse. Last time there were a number of historical checks and balances in place within the Republican party to at least try and reign him in. This time he's surrounded by people as crazy as he is with very little to stop them, especially if they win the Senate and House which is looking possible. He's just announced on stage that RJK Jr is going to be looking after healthcare which is just horrible. This speech is just a load of rambling nonsense, a child could give a more accurate and eloquent speech. SB

Which is now solely in the hands of European, African and Commonwealth nations to deliver. But we will probably make a much better job of it than the dog's breakfast that United States foreign policy has been for the last few decades.

That’s the issue as far as I’m concerned. He’s a creep and proven criminal, bullsh*ts off the charts, plus there’s a lot of mud around possible abuse. Amazing that anyone thinks he’s a suitable candidate to lead the most powerful nation on Earth. They’re nuts. It probably won’t make a huge amount of difference to us though. Maybe it’ll cost our exporters a bit more in tariffs. It might make relationships around international affairs a bit more awkward. I’m not sure it’ll have much of an impact on our daily lives unless we want it to by getting worked up what he says. On that point he’ll be constantly in the news again, so that becomes almost unwatchable.

The protectionism for me is less concerning than his foreign policy. It’s a continuation of a global trend. Biden for instance implemented tougher tariffs on Chinese imports than any during Trump first tenure. The EU are proposing tougher tariffs on Chinese goods right now, and Western firms are increasingly withdrawing their investments in mainland China, in some cases leaving altogether. We were entering an era of reverse globalisation even before Trump as COVID and Ukraine highlighted how fragile supply chains are and increasing tensions with China. In fairness, the Germans tried to placate Russia through trade and economic interdependence but it was clearly naive to view authoritarians like Putin and Xi through a western lens - ideology for them trumps (pardon the pun) economic growth. As others have said, the concern now is how he reacts to the conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, if they win the House and Senate then there really aren’t a lot of checks and balances…

You're probably correct. He will stop funding Ukraine, which will allow Putin to walk in and take control - technically that will be classed as peace when the war stops. But not the type of peace Ukrainians wanted In the Gaza/Israel situation, he will tell Netanyahu, get it done and finished quickly, irrelevant of how or cost, even if that means the full integration of Gaza into Israel and no separate land for the Palestinians - technically that will be classed as peace when the war stops. But not the type of peace the people of Gaza wanted. Also if Iran attacks Israel again, Trump will hit Iran with the mother of all missiles/weapons - technically that will be classed as peace when Iran cannot hit Israel again. But not the type of peace Iranians wanted. He will counter the impact on oil prices after hitting Iran by bringing Russia in from the cold and buying huge amounts of oil from them. Making Russia even more powerful in Europe, and being able to threaten Europe, and effectively control Europe - technically that will be classed as peace in Europe. But not the type of peace the people of Europe wanted.

I think the most important thing for Trump in a deal is to be seen as winning. I very much doubt he will just let Putin have Europe. I'm expecting either Trump to threaten to nuke Moscow if Russia does not return all Ukrainian land, or Russia will get Crimea and maybe the Russian-speaking areas in the East under the provision that Ukraine gets to join Nato and the EU if it chooses.

Regarding your first paragraph, yesterday the United States may have been the most powerful nation on Earth, this morning it is far less certain.

"I'm expecting either Trump to threaten to nuke Moscow if Russia does not return all Ukrainian land" This is never going to happen and even if it did Putin wouldn't believe him given it's the destruction of the US if they nuked Russia. It's a completely empty threat which Putin would ignore. "Russia will get Crimea and maybe the Russian-speaking areas in the East under the provision that Ukraine gets to join Nato and the EU if it chooses." So a large number of people who don't all want to be Russian become Russian? That's not peace, that's capitulation. It's shouldn't be up to Russia if another independent country gets to join international organisations. Neither of those are stated policies, you're just making stuff up now you have to justify all the things you've said over the last few days. SB
