Seemed to just be turning into the usual mud-slinging and misrepresentation. Got too much to do to deal with the abuse reports, PMs and emails which these threads generate. Not really sure it should be my job to deal with all that on what's ostensibly a football forum.

Yes, that was me. The idea was that people who have no interest or who don't wish to discuss the topic can just hide the thread and be done with it and (somewhat naively) I thought that it would then contain the sprawling arguments from infesting other threads if there was basically a designated zone to have these arguments that everyone else can ignore.

It's not really worked. At this point, I'd just ban the topic altogether if it was me, draconian as it is. People don't seem to be able to discuss it without it getting very heated.

It should work though.

If somebody wants to highlight the latest atrocity by the IDF then there is a ready made thread to do so. Likewise, if somebody wants to demonise an entire fanbase because of the actions of a minority of racist hooligan scumbags whilst at the same time minimising or dismissing antisemitism then they have a choice of two threads to go to.

At this point, I think it’s got to the stage where some posters would rather use the situation to troll or bait other board users.

Edit. Something else that needs to be addressed are the posters who contribute very little, have never started a thread, but spend most of their time downvoting and criticising other posters. Its passive aggressive sh1t stirring.

The fact you’re lashing out so wildly at so many is probably a good sign to wind it in.

I don't mind people reporting things which they think are out of line, but when it turns into a lengthy dialogue and then banned ex-posters send me abuse by email, that's when I think it gets a bit much.

I was at a lecture last evening at Glasgow Caledonian University given by Dr Jon Roozenbeek, who specialises in digital misinformation.

Some of the stuff he was highlighting is what we see on here from the same posters on the same subject.

Very interesting stuff.

I give up on threads which look like they are descending into bickering but in my view it is not just threads on the Middle East, and not just threads that get pulled.

Perhaps the best advice I would offer is for people not to bear grudges, which seem to me to underlie much of the bickering that goes on.

Quite - respond to the post content, not the poster is a good maxim (aka play the ball not the person).

Totally agree and by more than 1 poster too. The lack of self awareness and/or personal responsibility of a few posters is astounding. Lots of looking at of the window rather than in the mirror unfortunately

Not sure exactly who you mean, but the fact is that the repeated starting of threads on the ME conflict is almost always by the same two people, whose main aim seems to be inflammatory.

Other forum members can't then be blamed for posting on those same threads to call out disinformation or misleading stuff if it's there; or to defend themselves against personal smears.

Sorry Phil, hope that doesn't add fuel to the fire, just delete if so.

That's a good example of you at your disingenuous, misleading worst.

Perhaps you'd like to explain why you think I shouldn't "get involved" in a thread started by Phil that's fundamental not only to his health & well-being, but that of all other board users too.

You get involved in most ME debates, yet you blame them on "2 posters" when they get pulled. And you call me disingenuous.

Because, as I said in my post of 18.40 that you just downvoted -

"Other forum members can't then be blamed for posting on those same threads to call out disinformation or misleading stuff if it's there; or to defend themselves against personal smears."

Where I see racism/antisemitism, I will always call it out, always. If it wasn't in the OPs, I wouldn't "get involved".

Apparently you'd prefer me to shut up and not say anything though. Out of your own mouth.
