A Town XI that never was… 09:20 - Nov 19 with 8071 views | selondonblue23 | Inspired by a podcast I’ve heard from Palace fans. An XI of players who somehow never played for Town, but it really feels like they did or very much could have had things gone differently. ** GK: Joe Lewis - From Bury, played for Posh, very promising at one time. The perfect fit for a 2012 move to PR. RB: Greg Halford - A talented, young Colchester player. How did he never move here?! CB: Paddy McCarthy - Had to check he didn’t play for us under Jewell. CB: Richard Wood - Ditto. Still not sure he didn’t play next to Danny Higginbotham and/or Neill Collins. LB: George Friend - Maybe we went for Stephen Ward instead… RM: Gareth McLeary - “Tabb, finds Skuse, he plays it to McLeary…” CM: Kenny Lunt - I loved the Crewe team he was in. Rivers, Ashton etc. We always seemed to beat them approx 4-3. I feel like around the 2000-2004 era we were very good at picking up the best players at less good clubs, but maybe we just took Jamma instead. CM: Graeme Dorrans - Obviously the Norwich connection comes into play but feels very us at one time or another, maybe it could have been us instead of Albion when he moved down to England. LM: Stephen Quinn - Possibly because of his brother but I really feel like this has happened. CF: Craig Mackail-Smith - The Posh thing again. Good player for them, very Jewell. CF: Billy Sharp - Scored a lot of goals in Championship while we were there. Had that nice moment at PR for Doncaster where we clapped him. Would have been a Chopra or Priskin type signing. Manager - Warnock. I think we’d have had a lot of fun. In forming this I did feel slightly scarred by Jewell and McCarthy, but there’s a touch of Burley/Royle/Magilton in there too.

A Town XI that never was… on 10:10 - Nov 19 with 5295 views | Sharkey | To answer the question about Halford, it seems strange to remember that at the time Colchester had a better team than Town. He wanted to play in the PL, which he did, and Reading paid something like 3 million. He's still playing this season, I believe. (Blyth Spartans.) For what it's worth, I do think it's strange Town didn't sign Poku a couple of seasons ago, particularly as he was very much McGreal's project. But Colchester almost seem to have a deal with Peterborough whereby they'll send players there and Posh will 'fatten them up for market' and split the profit. (Kent, Poku, Ihonvien. Szmodics of course went there via Bristol C.)

We'd already got Marshall. Wonder how different things would have been if we'd got Poom.

I think we stay up with Poom Didn't we bid £4 million and they wanted £5 million. Ended up paying near that for Sereni anyway. Yes, Derby also went down but we were a much better side than them

Gullitt was never on trial, we just looked at him. We were the first professional club to look at John Barnes.

There are a few town-related websites that say Gullitt had a trial with us, but that Robson decided against it because of concerns over discipline and he went on to sign for Feyenoord. Urban myth maybe.

You mean Gullit was 'scouted', i.e watched while playing for someone in the Netherlands?

I think that's the story getting embellished over the years. I think the only source for it is the Evening Star on the day after we won the UEFA Cup.
