A Town XI that never was… 09:20 - Nov 19 with 8066 viewsselondonblue23

Inspired by a podcast I’ve heard from Palace fans. An XI of players who somehow never played for Town, but it really feels like they did or very much could have had things gone differently.

**

GK: Joe Lewis - From Bury, played for Posh, very promising at one time. The perfect fit for a 2012 move to PR.

RB: Greg Halford - A talented, young Colchester player. How did he never move here?!

CB: Paddy McCarthy - Had to check he didn’t play for us under Jewell.

CB: Richard Wood - Ditto. Still not sure he didn’t play next to Danny Higginbotham and/or Neill Collins.

LB: George Friend - Maybe we went for Stephen Ward instead…

RM: Gareth McLeary - “Tabb, finds Skuse, he plays it to McLeary…”

CM: Kenny Lunt - I loved the Crewe team he was in. Rivers, Ashton etc. We always seemed to beat them approx 4-3. I feel like around the 2000-2004 era we were very good at picking up the best players at less good clubs, but maybe we just took Jamma instead.

CM: Graeme Dorrans - Obviously the Norwich connection comes into play but feels very us at one time or another, maybe it could have been us instead of Albion when he moved down to England.

LM: Stephen Quinn - Possibly because of his brother but I really feel like this has happened.

CF: Craig Mackail-Smith - The Posh thing again. Good player for them, very Jewell.

CF: Billy Sharp - Scored a lot of goals in Championship while we were there. Had that nice moment at PR for Doncaster where we clapped him. Would have been a Chopra or Priskin type signing.

Manager - Warnock. I think we’d have had a lot of fun.

In forming this I did feel slightly scarred by Jewell and McCarthy, but there’s a touch of Burley/Royle/Magilton in there too.

With these additions we're beginning to have the makings of two XIs. All perfectly Ipswichy players at one point or another.

Yep I think you can select Alex Ferguson's eleven to trounce, sorry play, Mike Walker's eleven now.

I could be completely wrong, but weren't we linked with Oli Watkins when he was at Exeter?

Think I read a story on here about Pat Jennings nearly joining.

Thinking about the manager who never managed us, didn't Alex Ferguson get sounded out by the Cobbolds when Robson left for the England job ? Or is that another urban myth ?

Fergie recently did an interview with Ally McCoist, possibly for TNT Sports. He mentioned three English clubs came in for him whilst at Aberdeen. Can’t remember all three, one was Arsenal. Didn’t mention Ipswich at all.

Jamie Vardy was on our radar too wasn't he?

He was. Vardy wanted to come here too but we dithered and he went to Leicester from Fleetwood.

George Boyd was in the car with Paul Taylor down the A14 from Posh.

Taylor signed, Boyd didn't as ME wanted put a clause in the contract with a release clause of £10m.

Vardy was indeed linked when he was at Fleetwood, but Leicester got there first.

Kevin Phillips is another - had him in the door, but couldn't agree a fee with Watford, and couldn't go to tribunal as we already had one pending for the outgoing sale of Tony Vaughan. Phillips got in his car and drove straight to Sunderland and signed for them instead.

He's been down to Portman Road a few times doing media with Rotherham and has taken it in good spirits when he gets ribbed about that.

Shaun Derry was a deal we very nearly did under Keane.

James Beattie is another one, he was a bit old & crap by then but he was very close to signing for us at one point.

I'm not sure you can put Chopra and Priskin in the same bracket as Billy Sharp

Fair. They were bought in the hope of producing the kind of record he went on to produce.
