A Town XI that never was… 09:20 - Nov 19 with 8072 viewsselondonblue23

Inspired by a podcast I’ve heard from Palace fans. An XI of players who somehow never played for Town, but it really feels like they did or very much could have had things gone differently.

**

GK: Joe Lewis - From Bury, played for Posh, very promising at one time. The perfect fit for a 2012 move to PR.

RB: Greg Halford - A talented, young Colchester player. How did he never move here?!

CB: Paddy McCarthy - Had to check he didn’t play for us under Jewell.

CB: Richard Wood - Ditto. Still not sure he didn’t play next to Danny Higginbotham and/or Neill Collins.

LB: George Friend - Maybe we went for Stephen Ward instead…

RM: Gareth McLeary - “Tabb, finds Skuse, he plays it to McLeary…”

CM: Kenny Lunt - I loved the Crewe team he was in. Rivers, Ashton etc. We always seemed to beat them approx 4-3. I feel like around the 2000-2004 era we were very good at picking up the best players at less good clubs, but maybe we just took Jamma instead.

CM: Graeme Dorrans - Obviously the Norwich connection comes into play but feels very us at one time or another, maybe it could have been us instead of Albion when he moved down to England.

LM: Stephen Quinn - Possibly because of his brother but I really feel like this has happened.

CF: Craig Mackail-Smith - The Posh thing again. Good player for them, very Jewell.

CF: Billy Sharp - Scored a lot of goals in Championship while we were there. Had that nice moment at PR for Doncaster where we clapped him. Would have been a Chopra or Priskin type signing.

Manager - Warnock. I think we’d have had a lot of fun.

In forming this I did feel slightly scarred by Jewell and McCarthy, but there’s a touch of Burley/Royle/Magilton in there too.

James Coppinger.

Kevin Phillips.

The failure to sign Coppinger left us short staffed for AGES.

I'm one of the people who was blamed for getting Paul Cook sacked. PM for the full post.

there was local lad, Roberto Carlos type left back, I think his name was Phil Ham

Sorry you have that wrong.

It was actually a Roberto Larcos type left back for the older generation who played PES.

Thinking about the manager who never managed us, didn't Alex Ferguson get sounded out by the Cobbolds when Robson left for the England job ? Or is that another urban myth ?

I might be misremembering

Emilio Izaguirre - left back who became a regular for Celtic but we were unable to get a work permit for us before going to Scotland.

Séamus Coleman - I’m pretty sure that Jim almost signed him but Coleman’s then manager recommended him to Everton and he opted to sign for them.

Indeed, Haarlem. He was 18, if I remember rightly.

Not far by ferry.

Was on trial, think Jim opted against signing him rather than it being a work permit issue.

And we'd agreed a fee with Sligo Rovers for Coleman before Everton came in.

Ruud Gullitt

Paul Gascoigne

Sir Bobby had them both in the door on trial but passed.

I thought Gascoigne didn’t want to leave Newcastle at the time?

I still think what could have happened if we actually had signed Shaun Derry. We really needed that type of player at that moment, and IIRC he was in the office ready to sign and it was pulled or something?

Or was that Charlie Austin...

We'd already got Marshall. Wonder how different things would have been if we'd got Poom.

I'm absolutely convinced we'd have stayed up with a proven Premier League stopper like Poom instead of Sereni. It's the hill I'll die on.

Still can't get over him flouncing about playing in the cold, in January.

How much misery could we have avoided?!

Spot-on, it was in 1981 as they knew Bobby was off to the England job at the end of that season.

Gascoigne was 14 at the time. Charlie Nicholas and Pat Nevin were also down on trial but never signed.

Think he would have been a good signing but to think that Derry was the answer to all
Of our problems isn’t realistic of where we where at that time.

I think we stay up with Poom

Didn't we bid £4 million and they wanted £5 million. Ended up paying near that for Sereni anyway.

Yes, Derby also went down but we were a much better side than them

There were so many things wrong that season, but the goalkeeping situation was a disaster.

Richard Wright (and his agent) didn't do us any favours either.

Having been of the same opinion as you and recently put straight, feel this may be the best spot to explain what I was told about Sereni not wanting to play in that match v Dag & Red which seemed to be the beginning of the end for him.

From what I was told, he got little support from the club when moving over and his family failed to settle in the area. So his family moved back to Italy over the christmas period and he'd asked to miss the game to help them move.

Rudi Skácel is one I seem to remember went on for ages and we missed out think he was at Southampton at the time.

Derry was offered more money by QPR. Austin went to Burnley as he'd worked with Eddie Howe before, from what I was told by their chairman when I met him on a train once!

Not high profile but had a decent career, Harry Arter had a trial for us when he was released by Charlton before dropping into non-league for a spell.

And also, to look back now at a keeper who'd never played without a winter break in first season in the league, not wanting to play in an FA Cup 3rd tie against a literal non-league side was just rank bad management from Burley.

Always thought he was suggested by Robson himself, but the fianaces were a concern with the new stand under construction, so they kept it in house with our Furguson. In ‘Time On The Grass’ Robson suggests that it was to keep the continuity going but the reality was he could see the potential of young Fergie, their friendship starting with the Aberdeen matches.

Any credible XI has to include Mr Batistuta, surely

That's the one that immediately springs to mind. Also Kevin Phillips.

Think it was a cultural difference, Sereni didn't expect to play in the cup, as he wouldn't have done in Italy, but at the time teams here didn't switch around as much as they do now.

George Boyd, Dwight Gayle, Jason Roberts, Jody Craddock, George Elokobi, Freddy Eastwood.

Basically if you look through the Sunderland and Wolves teams of the late 2000s, about 1/3 of them played for Ipswich at some point (usually about 7 years later when they were rubbish), and the rest almost did.

With these additions we're beginning to have the makings of two XIs. All perfectly Ipswichy players at one point or another.
