Data contradicts council’s claim £15 stadium parking “aligns with other clu 13:40 - Dec 5 with 1643 viewsipswichcouk

I thought I’d share this article that challenges Ipswich Borough Council’s claim that the new £15 parking charges at Portman Road are "significantly lower than car parks close to other Premier League grounds" and addresses "significant congestion" around Portman Road on matchdays.

Interesting but are all of these car parks comparable? Are they council owned or private or just hand picked ones? I guarantee there are more expensive car parks than £4 closer to the spurs stadium for example. And the one listed for Arsenal is 8.6 miles away? The ones listed closer to the ground on other parking sites are well over £15 - https://fanlounge.co.uk/parking-near-emirates-stadium/

Also you seem to have hand picked which car parks you've chosen to feature from the Away Days guide. Villa has more expensive ones listed as closer.

I’ve tried to make it as comparable as possible but the London clubs are a bit trickier. For example, there is very limited public parking around the Emirates on match days as they have a residents-only parking scheme in operation – hence a lot of fan sites suggesting people park further out and get the tube in. But it’s fair to assume that the majority of fans are not travelling to the London stadiums by car.

While you’re obviously right there are more expensive car parks available at Spurs, there are also cheaper car parks available. I guess the same argument could be made in Ipswich – you can pay less than £15 if you park further away from the stadium.

Regardless of what IBC say I think it’s just a case of profiteering off the back of the club’s success.

Whether it works for them or not only time will tell but all of the justification being put forward is irrelevant. It’s about making money, no more and no less!

That's kind of my point. It feels a bit disingenuous to say that the data shows that IBC has one of the highest parking charges in the EPL, yet you've omitted lots of car parks listed on that website that charge higher or ignored key information such as the Arsenal one also requires you to take the tube, the Bournemouth one has very few spaces, the official Leicester car park is £16, the Fulham one isn't actually a car park, it's just a meter for on-street parking, Liverpool is only £5 if you book in advance, Forest spaces are limited and priority is given to priority is given to disabled supporters, coaches, players, match and club officials etc etc

How can anyone trust or validate this without knowing the underlying data - you could simply have typed anything in.

For example, for a clear benchmark comparison you should include how many available Spaces, ensure it is Council owned, what is the cost per hr etc.

Right now it's just a list of numbers with no supporting evidence.

For example, you call out Arsenal £2 but 8 miles from the Stadium?!?

That is the basically parking next to West Ham station and going to the Emirates, or for Ipswich, you would be parking in Coddenham to go to Portman Road.

I winder what the impact of the increase was. I didnt check it out as I went past but wonder if the car park was less used.

Whilst being generally in favour of anything that discourages car usage, i am not sure this will, particularly on evenings and sundays, I think it is just as likely to push people to on street car parking, which would not be a good outcome.

I'm not sure where you get the data from but the official VIlla parking (still an 8 minute walk) is £15.

I would guess a lot of clubs don't have parking right near the stadium for ordinary fans like Spurs.

That car park is right at the ground. I would suspect any top league club will charge £15 or more for parking right at the stadium. There are alternative places to park (just don't park where i usually go......for free!)

I'm sure COlchester is £10 on the day?

You need to compare parking wihin 0.1m away to be consistent.

So the increase isn’t to take advantage of fans, it is to reduce congestion by discouraging fans from using the car parks.

The Star claimed it was empty but probably turned up at 6pm, it looked roughly the same as normal to me pre & post match and congestion looked just as bad, or at least people were still driving like total see you next Tuesdays.

Imagine the uproar if the council was found not to be charging 'the going rate' for other commercial assets that it owns.

I get that it's inconvenient, but the uproar is only because it impacts our own. As I've said before, no doubt we'd consider other moves to charge the going rate as being good stewardship of the council's resources.

What a stupid comparison

Arsenal £2.. if I was paying only £2 to be only 0.1 miles from Arsenal stadium the first thing I would do before walking away from the car is double-check with my insurance company I was still fully insured. So not surprised it's 8.6 miles away. Worse, Spurs, if it was £4 and only 0.1 miles away, Insurance check, 6 steering wheel locks and leave Billy in the back seat (Billy is next doors German Shep).

I'm sure if people park 8.6 miles from Portman Road they will find much cheaper parking.

What IBC should do is introduce a congestion charge as per London and charge every vehicle to come into the greater Ipswich area on match days. Afterall it will help with climate change and nobody will moan then
