I give you Liam Feeney. On loan in 2016. Reading the Dozzell book and Jason mentions it’s Feeney who puts the cross in for Andre to score at Sheff Weds.
Might sound crazy but the latest video with Westlake had me googling his career with us and researching on Wikipedia. I starting going around a year after he left but got me wondering he must be up there with one of our greatest homegrown players? Or have I got that one completely wrong

Always thought he was a good player with an eye for goal. Career seemed to fizzle out when he left us

In the Royle and Magilton eras (2003-2009) our team was comprised of a combination of:
(i) players left from the Burley/Premier League era who didn't really have a saleable value - e.g. Naylor, Wilnis, Magilton and McGreal
(ii) experienced Championship players who we signed on frees or relatively low fees - e.g. De Vos, Currie, Kuqi, Horlock, Forster, Lee
(iii) players that came through the youth ranks.
In this last group there were many new hopes, but in reality only Bent and to some extent Ambrose were sold and went on to have long term Prem/Champ careers. A lot of these homegrown players probably got more games than they would have done if not coming up through the ranks, and it's amazing to look back at just how many appearances some of them had:
- Matt Richards, 148 appearances - Ian Westlake, 113 appearances - Owen Garvan, 163 appearances - Dean Bowditch, 78 appearances - Danny Haynes, 115 appearances - Lewis Price, 68 appearances - Billy Clarke, 49 appearances (I would have guessed 10)
Of these, Westlake was probably the best prospect, but he went to Leeds and it all fizzled out from there. He was a tidy, industrious player with a huge tank and a decent left foot. But he was fairly one paced and wasn't a tricky player.
Not one of our greatest ever homegrown players, but probably the pick of the mid-2000s crop (if we assume Bent and Ambrose were more early-2000s.

Yes, Westlake certainly had a good engine. Used to be a decent water polo player too, I believe.
Joe Royle's nickname for him always made me laugh: "Bum lungs. Breathes through his backside".

Westlake was a really good swimmer, I seem to remember him having a swimming race against Karen Pickering for charity or something and beating her.
Billy Clarke was a proper talent, he joined the academy at a similar time as I left. He had moved over from Ireland on his own and was staying with a family in Stoke Park who used to house some of the young lads coming over. I knocked about with him for a while and used to go over and play Playstation with him, really nice lad who went on to have a decent career in L1 / L2 but were it not for injuries I think he's one that could've played higher.

Definitely would have played at a higher level but was unfortunate with injuries. We had a couple other Irish lads who I thought would make it. One was a left-back who was very good and reminded me of Gary Neville - but again, had horrendous injuries (can’t remember his name). And another was a central midfielder- Cathal but can’t remember his surname. Really skilful and was surprised that he didn’t make the first team.

Cathal Lordan. maybe? He came over at a similar time to Billy Clarke I think.
Michael Synnott might be the full back, he was decent as well but got released and moved back to Ireland.

I believe that Ian Westlake and Matt Richards both stepped up brilliantly to the first team from the academy.

Brian Murphy - GK who seemed like he might be the answer to our post Neil Alexander woes. But instead decided to warm the bench at Premier League QPR
If I remember rightly, they offered him a three-year deal on better money than us, so was difficult to turn down. Having been playing in the League of Ireland before he was with us, Brian hadn't made a lot of money from the game at that stage. Really top man and also the subject of my favourite TWTD headline.
Town Keeper Trapped By Volcano16th Apr 2010 11:22 Town boss Roy Keane has revealed that keeper Brian Murphy has been trapped in Ireland because of the closure of UK airspace due to ash from the Icelandic volcano. The Blues keeper was making his way back to Suffolk via ferry and car and last night had made it as far as Carlisle.25
