When he arrived, the talk from the KOA journo's was whether he'd be the "hairy arsed centre back who'll stick his foot through the ball" that we needed. He's that and a little bit more methinks.

For me, he has been the best of our central defenders this season in the sense that he just doesn't make defensive errors that the other central defenders are prone to. For example, see yesterday's error from O'Shea that should have led to a goal.

There can't be many better development stories than his. I remember Cambridge away under Cook when he barely looked a L1 defender. Slow, cumbersome, getting spun by Joe Ironside. Now he looks every inch a PL defender. Huge credit to him and McKenna.

Yes I remember when he was dropped for Nsiala and that initially improved the team. If it wasn’t for that injury to George Edmundson in the 2021/22 season he may not even have played a part in the league one promotion season the following year, but he had proved himself in that spell.
They'd all laugh at me if they knew what I was trying to do. To create a new strain of super-wine in half-an-hour with a fraction of nature's resources and a FOOL for an assistant. 'Bernard Black, he's mad,' they'd say, 'he's insane, he's dangerous.' Well I'll show them! I'll show them all!
Said it before and I’ll say it again, but ever since the day McKenna walked in the door I think Burgess is by far the most improved player under his stewardship. Morsy a close second I may add.

Wolfie had been frozen out and looked as though he would move on in the January too. I often remind my mates of the arguments we had back then as to whether or not he was better than Nsiala

Makes me wonder how good Woolfenden would have been given the chance to develop, rather than being frozen out when O'Shea came in. He looked efficient in the first three games of the season, and everyone had a mare against Everton. Burgess had really taken his opportunity from Greaves' injury.
I’m so happy for him and he’s probably the player who has surprised me most - after his performance away at Barrow in the cup embarrassment I’d have quite happily left him there. Looks an undroppable premier league defender at this point in time.

Even more amazing a few fans immediately wrote him off when we won promotion as one of the players not PL quality.
Yep, there were actually one or two who wanted him out of the door before our first game at Sunderland in 2023. Not good enough for the Championship etc. so wrong.
I think he’s been excellent. Is he our best defender? At the moment yes, but there is an awful lo come from Jacob Greaves. Woolfenden has been a bit unlucky and I’ve no problem seeing him in the side. With ‘Shea we are well stocked for CHs.
