Don't know about this fella. How does he compare as a player to johnson?

a niche perspective

He was called up to the Euros provisional squad in 2021. Must have something about him.

More of a central defender that plays right back, rather than a right sided player.

Probably similar to Tuanzebe in that he is less likely to get forward, than Johnson.

From memory, is pretty quick, and played as a DCM for Shrewsbury ( on loan) under Hurst, in League One.

Was highly thought of a few years back. Never really fulfilled his potential. Only played one game for Atalanta this season. See him more of a CB rather than a RB, but can play either. Personally, I would prefer to stick with Johnson and loan/spend in other areas.

Poll: New hobby suggestions for NeedhamChris.

He must have had something about him 2021. I don't get why people keep bringing out previous England caps as a way to say people would be good signings now

Was highly thought of at Norwich and then Everton. Has PL experience, which should be a positive. But was apparently a bit arrogant at Everton and refused to sign a new contract as he thought he was better than playing for Everton*, then he moved to Atalanta and proved he wasn't. Looks like he has only played 66 minutes for Atalanta this season, at least that's a lovely part of the world for a 6 month holiday.

Could be better than Johnson

*To be fair Everton did sell him for £11m which helped them hit PSR

We looked so much better when Tuanzebe was fit. Looks like they are after the same CB first, ball playing FB second. Johnson isn't quite that. He can recover like Axel.

Hopefully it will mean we can go back to 4 at the back and start Szmodics and Delap together more often. If we're going to stay up, we have to score goals.

Looks like a textbook Moneyball signing to me. Can he cover the ground when we shift everyone over to get Davis up the pitch? Can he make the tackles? Is his value/age right?

He is super versatile can play in a lot of positions. Physically is more than capable.

He is prone to an error here and there. But for us, I think he would be a good asset to have. Decent enough player with a lot of experience.

Was he that highly thought of at Everton beyond his first season? Was bought for £20m and sold for £10m. In his last 2 seasons at Everton he was on the bench far more often than not.

I'm not opposed to the signing but I feel like people are rewriting history a bit with his calibre

Originally perceived to be a right back but once Farke brought him in it was at centre half and that's where he stayed. Had /has pace to burn and when he 'goes on a run' I'm sure it would remind older fans of one K Beattie! He scored a screamer at home to Reading I think it was.
Problem with Private Godfrey is no-one has been able to teach him how to defend as a centre half (and that includes Ancelotti, Dyche and his current club plus us originally!) . For a player of his stature he is not dominant in the air. However, the main issue with him is he 'ball watches' and loses concentration and focus on what he should be doing which is marking his man. Result being that 'his man' peels away from him unmarked and scores! If you want a reliable defender then he's not best suited for you. However, if you can put up with that and focus on his pace and power then it would be a damn good signing (unfortunately!). Much talk of Spurs leading the chase before Christmas but that seems to have fizzled out.

Could you see him being suited to a hybrid rightback cb role who's job it Is to assist the right sided winger at times with overlaps etc

I think he would work well in a 5 but I think that's the case for most of our defenders.

He was, certainly at Everton. The problem was he had refused to sign a new contract, even after they offered him a couple of variations, he thought he was better than Everton. Everton then had the situation of his contract could run out, plus they were under pressure with hitting the financial rules and needed to sell some players, which is why they sold him for less than they paid for him.

Why was he not playing regularly for them then?

Hi Frimley,
Yes that may be better for him. That role would give him more scope for the pace and power he has. At Everton he had no settled position in their defence which clearly didn't help. That said if you can't defend properly for Dyche then you will be shipped out and that's what happened. Will be very intrigued to see how he plays for you. Good squad player no doubt.

That he needs to keep playing like he did against Chelsea. Mind you, if McKenna wants to 'bed' Godfrey in like he did O'Shea, it probably means he'll be out of the side again.

Saying that, we need cover - especially if we're going to continue with three at the back.

And of course, in best traditions of hilarity, the scene then changes to the confused coach of the Atlanta Falcons NFL team putting the phone down and saying "Who is Ben Godfrey?"
