Will under 30pts be enough to stay up? 21:55 - Jan 17 with 2235 viewsChrisd

Southampton and Leicester just aren’t good enough to stay up. Will either us, Wolves or Everton get 30pts? I think that will be enough to stay up. From the bottom 5 upwards, the gap is huge.

Quite possibly, it will definitely be a low total this season

The news that Everton are unlikely to be punished for FFP this season makes the target slightly higher than it could have been, especially if Leicester are punished for it with a points deduction.

To say that Leicester aren't good enough to stay up is a little premature, but I do think it's between Wolves and ourselves for the final spot. I think mid 30s will be needed.

Not a chance, Wolves and Everton will kick on 38 minimum likely 40.

I just can’t see any of those sides (including us) getting anywhere near 38pts.

I don’t know.

It depends on the results in the second half of the season.

The teams currently in the bottom 3 don't score enough goals and concede too many soft ones...Wolves have no trouble scoring goals but can't defend, Everton have a tight defence but are rubbish in front of goal. Don't know what the points total will end up being in order to stay up, but we need to improve at both ends of the pitch ourselves and hope that the new managers at either Everton / Wolves can't fix their problems.

Think Wolves and Everton will be both be over 35 points. Teams scrapping at the bottom typically tend to get a run of results towards the end as it gets crucial and other teams have less to play for etc.

Last two seasons if you take away the points deductions, you would need a minimum of 36 points to finish 4th bottom, don’t see that it will be much different this year.

The bottom three could all be under 30 points, but that doesn’t stop us from being relegated.

Got to be aiming for 35+

Doubling the half way points score would suggest yes.

Edit: Just came back to this thread, now I'm awake, and want to be clearer. The yes is in relation to "Will either us, Wolves or Everton get 30pts?", rather than "Will under 30pts be enough to stay up?"

The league is weaker this season so it's possible. There is a 7 point gap between 15th & 16th, and let's face it none of the bottom 5 have demonstrated, todate, consistent form to be capable of closing a 7pt gap. None of the bottom 5 is even averaging 1 point per game, I'm not seeing anything at the moment which will change that. Where they have found a bit of form, it invariably only lasts 2 games. So it is between the bottom 5

Pinching a stat from the wireless (I've not checked it) the bottom three last season ended up with a 0.6 point per game total, the current bottom 5 (ex S'hton) are averaging 0.7. Whereas Forest survived on 0.8 and 32 points

I've always said from the start of the season we would finish 17th but it would be tight, even on goal difference. I also said we would end up on 35 points and I'm not changing that prediction.

The only way it’s going to be a low points total to stay up is if the bottom three get cut adrift.

It is very possible we could be third bottom and finish on fewer than 30 points.

I would say minimum we’ll need is 34

I don’t think the league is weaker this year. It lost Luton, Burnley and Sheffield United, which is a significant downgrade on it losing Leeds, Southampton and Leicester the previous year.

Add in the fact that this year has seen a lot of the top teams losing or drawing to teams in the middle of the table. 15th place is currently 7 points ahead of 16th place, when previous seasons would have seen that gap be much shorter.

If they had a decent experienced manager then I’d agree with you. But I’m not sure RVN has the ability to do so - in fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if he is sacked before the end of the season.

Fans are already not happy with him. He left PSV after falling out with the management and dressing room unrest. Wouldn't be surprised if he walks before the end and I don't think he keeps them up.
