Anfield is a class stadium in a decent little city 18:21 - Jan 25 with 12959 viewsMullet

Absolute tourist trap though, only scousers I heard all day were the stewards. I’ve not experienced such a lack of atmosphere since I nearly drowned in Queenstown years ago. Made the Etihad feel like Galatasaray. Not since Wetherspoons built an empire has a beautiful building been so full of cheap tat and lost souls.

Salah is absolute class and I guess it’s a privilege to see him at work scoring like that, but today was a hiding to nothing. Morsy looked like he was a touch too many off the level unfortunately. No shame when these lot are being handed the title and can produce stuff at a canter like that. Slot is a very good manager.

Our goal was obviously a moment. Loved how Enciso demanded the ball off Phillips and hit a scud missile into the box. We are going to hurt teams with him and philogene adding to what we’ve got. People filming and joining in with their show tune dirge were astounding. In exactly the opposite way to the rest of the away end. Absolute brilliant gallows humour, defiance and limbs.

Think we might not see Burns again. He went down in front of us and it sounded worse than it looked. All about the oxygen now.

Why is he flogging Delap? 76 minutes chwrging around on his own and much of the second half spent 20 yards outside OUR area!!!! Booked on 75, by my reckoning 1 off a two game ban which will come during more potentially winnable games. Seemed crazy to me.
They are a fine team, possibly tge best club side in the world right now so getting beaten is no disgrace. But, were we still in L1 and came here in the FACup 3rd round, I'm pretty sure we would not have stood off them, we'd have ruffled a few feathers and been more in their face. Far too passive and that frustrates me.

The booking was so obvious too. Ref was giving him nothing and waving him away right before it. Really need a striker in to allow us to rotate more especially if he misses two important games soon

I followed a group of Liverpool fans who didn't know where the ground was!

Just a tourist attraction basically.

I know that was then, but it could be again..

Yes but pushes only count if they are by our players. I want to see the one where JP played him in about 40 minutes too, looked like he got caught there.

Been a decent day all in all but frustrating.

I've got to say the Atmosphere sounded excellent on the google box, both sets of fans singing almost non-stop, but I will take your word for it if you were there.

Touch harsh on the Liverpool fans, they had their moments when they were quite loud, albeit in response to us.

Around the ground before and after, we encountered fans Ireland, Scandinavia, Belfast, the Far East and goodness knows where else…. But Liverpool are up there as one of the most famous clubs in the world, whether we / they like it or not. It’s no different to people from the UK going to Barcelona for a weekend and to take in a game.

We did actually find a couple of local fans in the Flat Iron and shared a couple of pints with them discussing our teams - genuinely friendly and they appreciated the journey we’ve been / are on.

When I got off the train at lunchtime, I took a walk from lime street to see abit more of Liverpool as a city.

I saw about 10 half and half scarves being worn (this was two hours before kickoff) and all of them were Liverpool fans. None scousers. But Liverpool fans.

We were an away end of supporters. They were a home end of fans.

Liverpool is a good city, much better than some around (Birmingham, Leeds to name two).

On way home from Anfield. What a fantastic stadium. However , as with the Olympic Stadium , Ethithad and others it has been corporately cleansed in the pursuit of maximum profit. Thus killing the atmosphere.

Birmingham as a city hasn’t half improved (couldn’t get any worse!) and I quite like Leeds. Only been to Liverpool once and that was on the coaches so saw nothing of it so can’t comment.

A few observations in relation to the comments on this threads.

(1) Liverpool is a great city, with many fantastic buildings. Six distinct areas made up it designation as a World Heritage site. It has over 2,500 listed buildings including more Georgian buildings than Bath. It also has much in the way of culture, such as the Tate, the Walker Gallery and the Maritime museum.

(2) I think the people are fantastic with a warmth and friendliness that just doesn't exist down south. And I love the sing-song nature of the accent.

(3) When it comes to tourists, I don't think it is just a question of foreigners and the like but the fact that the game has become much more middle class. Liverpool FC itself is situated in the most deprived constituency in England, and the cost of tickets these days I imagine puts the game beyond the sort of people who would once have formed the bedrock of its support in pre-Premier League days. This itself no doubt impacts the sort of atmosphere generated.

I've said it before, I was in a pub in Liverpool that put its prices up on matchdays. The locals I spoke to agreed that it was a smart move, as it gave the pub more chance of surviving, and didn't mind paying the extra on matchdays. (Don't know if it was for Everton games as well.)

That's a bit underhand. The tax payers are already keeping the pubs open and now having to pay extra again. World's gone mad.

I’m going to be devils advocate here, and say/ suggest it is highly unlikely that any away game for us at one of the “big clubs” will ever have a top atmosphere, especially when we turn up and barely attack/ the home team races into a comfortable lead.

The atmosphere at our game against Bristol Rovers was fairly quiet and not at all noisy despite being a big crowd. In the same way we all turned up just to watch a comfortable home win against an inferior opponent, the Liverpool fans will have turned up yesterday with the same mentality. We are just not a big fish to them at all, we didn’t earn the right to make them raise the volume and urge the team on.

FWIW Anfield is a really impressive stadium with all of the recent upgrades and was much better than the Emirates for atmosphere. They did have some spells where they made a lot of noise, but in their defence the game was over by half time.

I'm not sure that is totally borne out by the facts but I appreciate there are areas where that might appear to be the case.

The 2021 Census indicated that 16% of the population is non-white, and Liverpool itself has a long history of diversity as the following from Wikipedia demonstrates.

"While 84% of Liverpool's population is white, the city is one of the most important sites in the history of multiculturalism in the United Kingdom. Liverpool is home to Britain's oldest black community, dating to at least the 1730s, and some Liverpudlians are able to trace their black ancestors in the city back ten generations. Early black settlers in the city included seamen, the children of traders sent to be educated, and freed slaves (since slaves entering the country after 1722 were deemed free men).

The city is also home to the oldest Chinese community in Europe; the first residents of the city's Chinatown arrived as seamen in the 19th century. The gateway in Chinatown is also the largest gateway outside of China.

The city is also historically known for its large Irish and Welsh populations."

I might add that my mother-in-law's carers are all black or Asian, as are an awful lot of the staff at Aintree Hospital.

Less diverse than rural Suffolk? I doubt that very much. Is that a plus or a minus in your opinion?

Community grants from Councils I suspect. Or maybe it’s a new craze - see if you can drink enough on your own to keep a pub open.

That’s a very low bar. Not sure there’s any cities in the north of England that sent absolutely horrendous tbh. Edinburgh is good, but obvs that’s in Scotland… name me a decent city north of Watford!
