Sadly his powers appear to be waning. Such a shame he isn’t five years younger. I just wonder if the PL is now a step too far.

Totally agree, he served a purpose and now its time for McKenna to be ruthless and drop him once and for all. He's way too slow, can only pass the ball 3-4 yards and usually backwards, not capable of slotting a pass through defenders for the attackers to run onto (and never has been) and gets caught too often in possession. Not even sure if he was 5 years younger he would have been PL class otherwise he would have played there well before now

Agree but we missed him when he wasn't there a few games back. So we need someone that does his role but younger and a bit quicker.
Sadly not one of the League 1 players has fully made the step up. The double promotion really is a huge challenge.

I'd say he is at the peak of his powers, playing in the Prem, doing his job, leading his team even against some of the best players in the world.

Sure, he's not going to be so consistently effective as he was aginst L1 and Champ attackers. But that's hardly surprising.

Based on his performance against Man City and Liverpool, both PL and Champions League winners in recent years, he has fallen short, in other games he has performed brilliantly. He wouldn't improve a top 4 club's midfield but he is fantastic in Towns, as a player and leader. It is very harsh to compare him to midfielders in a totally different level of competition.

Except the game before Man City he was only on the field for one minute before giving the ball away in a dangerous area and then a few minutes later gave a way the free kick that lead to the second Brighton goal. The game before that he gave away a completely unnecessary penalty against Fulham.

Sam has been a leader for the last three seasons . Probably my favourite Captain since Mick Mills, but it’s sad to see him become a passenger over the last month or so.

Noþ sure this is entirely fair. We gave been playing world class sides in the last two games. Prior to that, Morsy has been one of our most consistent performers. Phillips has looked no better and whilst Cajuste is certainly talented, his form has dropped a little and the fact he still can't do 90 minutes is a real concern.
In addition, whilst itbis jot the done thing to criticise McKenna, against the too teams we have consistently been overrun in the middle of the park yet he has never contemplated playing an extra midfielder. At times, for me it screams either 532 or 4321 to get more control in midfield. Some on here will now say we have a flexible system. Maybe, but it's not 3 in midfield.

His form has waned compared with the games in the Autumn. Unfortunately, his leadership appears to be in decline as part of this. He has been our best captain for many years but increasingly our lack of leadership and organisation on the pitch is losing us points.

Problem is, to add a third midfielder we would have to either weaken the defence (especially tricky while Tuanzebe was injured) or draw another tooth from an attack which is already lacking bite.

He has been playing against world class players, judging him against this opposition and stating he has not been effective is the equivalent to sending in a 10 year old with a pound land budget meant for primark into saville row. I wouldn’t expect him to be effective especially with a forever changing and developing team around him. Only against the teams around us can we truly judge our players form. He will no doubt be replaced in the long run due to his age but not current form based in the last 2 games where McKenna would have been crazy to have expected different results regardless of what he will come out and say.

Morsy is one of several players where the physical demands of the league have really caught up with them. Connor Townsend’s energy levels in the second half show that we’ve flogged Leif too much as well.

Suspect, if Robson was manager, he would move Morsy on next season.

Have a feeling that KMc will be just as ruthless irrespective of the league we play in.

Ditto Delap. He looks knackered and Hirst should have been on at 60 instead of 76.

To think we signed Morsy in League One on a small fee from Middlesbrough, one of the best buys in club history! Yes, he is struggling of late as all the team has. We will definitely need some investment in central midfield next season whatever league we are in.

This. See also Liam Delap.

If we based Delap’s performances on the City and Liverpool games I’d be wondering what the hell we signed.

Not sure that its smart making big statements like attacking Morsy after playing Man City and Liverpool. They're not typical sides whichever league you're playing in.

Mind you, I expected Phillips to come through, cement his place in the side and perhaps both dislodge Morsy and take the captaincy. Phillips has been OK at best. And OK at worst. But we're not paying him the big bucks to be just OK. If Phillips and Cajuste are head and shoulders above Morsy then no problem - but they're not.

Everyone is looking for the easy fix whereby we buy in a superstar or offload a train wreck and then job's a good un. But maybe Kieran and his coaching squad need to do more with the players we've got. Not sure what his plan is as he seems to be tinkering too much.

Quite like the idea of starting with Hirst, he was unlucky not to score yesterday.

Having Delap on the bench will scare the hell out opponents.

The OP is making an observation, it’s not an attack and he’s right. Morsy is being caught on the ball way too often and is slowing the play down too much. A little break will do him good. Time for sensible squad utilisation (not rotation).

I agree we need someone other than Morsy that can hold and protect the ball better as many of our turnovers happen in the middle third.

However, much of your narrative here is nonsense. SM is 4th in the Ipswich stats for forward passes and 2nd in total distance passed, so, "3-4 yards and normally backwards" is patently untrue. He also completes more passes into the final third than any other player.

But you are 100% right that he gets caught in possession too often, we seem to have real issues with controlling the midfield against any PL side, and that is often where the games are won and lost.

In what way will having our best attacker not on the pitch scare the opponents?

It's not the Championship, I am not convinced teams are getting tired against us.

I think we look weaker without him. You don't need to be a fast, pass spraying midfielder. He does what he does very well.

Reality is short of magically finding someone with prem experience who can do what he does and integrate immediately into the team, he’s the best we have in that position and is our most important MF. Phillips it seems just isn’t able to do what Morsy does, unfortunately, albeit that was no doubt the idea. Sammy will know full well he’s not had the best couple of games (against two of the best midfields in the world) and I’d expect a reaction. He’s still got a big part to play this season. Beyond this season clearly we’re going to need to bring someone through or in to start to replace him.

Would you start Phillips and Cajuste over Morsy? For me Morsy is fat more reliable then both.
