Kier Starmer is now the on 08:36 - Feb 4 by MattinLondon | Knowing how unpopular they are, the Tories deliberately run the country into the ground knowing that Labour will have to make some unpopular decisions. Labour are forced to make unpopular decisions but over the next few years the economy gets back on track. The right-wing press slams Stramer at every opportunity. The Tories sweep into power, rejoins the Single Market and never mentions Brexit again. |
Here's a little quiz... Which former Treasury Chief left this note for his successor? "Dear Chief Secretary, I'm afraid there is no money. Kind regards - and good luck! [Redacted]."

Everyone has to tighten their belts if we want to fix the economy, infrastructure, transport etc. that the last lot decimated. No-one's "gutting vital funding for the elderly and vulnerable" - this, again, is falling for the right-wing rhetoric. It's removing what wasn't necessary for the vast majority who have lost it, to be better spent elsewhere. There will be some placed in a vulnerable position whatever you do, but you have to do what's best for the majority. |
“ falling for the right-wing rhetoric” I’m talking about lived experiences of real people. It seems like you’re the one drinking the kool-aid, and reeling off the party line…

The Brexit vote was 9 years ago, around 6,000,000 have reached pension age since then. Your logic is flawed.

Wrong! It was former Labour Chief Treasury Secretary Liam Byrne after Labour departed in 2010 leaving the country broke. I am not aware of any other senior ministers leaving such notes. Can you give some examples please?

So I was right then, a sample size of one. The government needs to do what's best, with limited resources, for the entire country. Not just your grandparents, or even a few people's grandparents. You can use any silly phrases about me you want, it's still the facts and logic of the matter.

From a news article “It’s taken more than 13 years but David Laws has finally apologised to Liam Byrne for weaponising that infamous scrawled note jokily saying “I’m afraid there is no money”. The Lib Dem said sorry to his Labour predecessor at an 11 Downing Street bash for surviving Treasury chief secretaries. It was the first encounter between the pair since May 2010, when Laws broke convention by publicly exploiting the private message an outgoing minister traditionally leaves for an incomer when a government changes after an election. Byrne, still Labour’s MP for Birmingham Hodge Hill, later wrote of how he “burnt with the shame” over the publication of the joke, which had been intended for Philip Hammond, a courteous and friendly Tory who was expected to be appointed chief secretary.”

Kier Starmer is now the on 06:59 - Feb 4 by noggin | I heard that in a recent poll, a quarter of young adults would prefer a dictator over the current system of accountability. That is actually shocking. |
I saw a bit on this on the newsagents. I’ve been intermittently crashing out ever since the inauguration, Elon’s fascist salute and the ever increasing wave of some of worst right wing politicians in the UK going over to America and supporting Trump in his narrative(s) My 5 year old son has high support needs. I fear for the world he is growing in to and what place he will personally have in it when extremism right wing views held by the likes of Reform and Tommy Robinson are considered a viable ideology. Trump is awful but we’re very much at risk of ushering in a government next time around run by equally ignorant and dangerous bigots, if polls are to be believed. Comments made by Reform’s MP’s and the “contract” they put out at manifesto time during the election paints an awful picture of a United Kingdom run by them with returns to archaic ways of thinking in regards to disability and support offered. Fascism is on the rise across the western world and there’s a whole host of seemingly normal people in our country actively willing it on and cheering. Very bleak times, indeed. You're not aware of any other senior ministers leaving such jokey notes because you've believed the right-wing story spreading that particular one and haven't looked into any further. Problem is Flash the Labour Party had a choice in who it targeted to pay to fix the economy etc The fact they looked around the UK and thought the most appropriate people to pay more were pensioners. Who have paid tax all there life rather then richer or more powerful targets isn't a good look however you attempt to dress it.

It's not "rather than richer or more powerful targets" though is it? Among other things, they've also hit private tuition fees by adding VAT at the standard 20% rate. [Post edited 4 Feb 10:58]

Well, at least the outgoing Tory chancellor actually said "sorry". Liam Byrne seemed to think it was all a huge laugh. Also, if it's breaking convention by publicising these notes, who publicised Reginald Maudling's note? Well done on trawling all the leftie rags for this info though.

Oh dear Blueas. You've been caught with your pants down haven't you? "at least the outgoing Tory chancellor actually said "sorry"" - you really are scraping the barrel of desperation there. It's always been a jokey note. I didn't "trawl all the leftie rags" - I've seen it plenty of times before, they were just the first that came up with a quick google. But it's obviously more likely to be reported there than in the right-leaning rags you read who made this a Labour scandal. I'd stop digging if I were you, this is painful to watch. 'Hoisted by your own petard' is such a beautiful phrase.

Look, I'm happy enough with their position on private tuition fees. But in reality that's probably only ever going to hit the lower middle classes trying to improve the prospects for their children. I can't see it affecting the wealthiest to much. The problem is if the Labour Party and some Labour supporters can't see how bad taking away fuel payments from pensioners looks it makes you wonder about their competence going forward

More shameful is the blind worshippers who'll try to find something good in it. They're even prepared to belittle their own elderly parents concern about their financial situation. Hope they're proud of the delightful cherubs they raised.

Oh right, you're happier with the policy that doesn't affect your family? You said hitting pensioners "rather than richer or more powerful targets". I gave you just one richer target they've also hit. There are others. Don't get me wrong, I'd like them to go further but in reality, as I said earlier, pretty much everyone needs to take a bit of a hit if we're to fix everything that's broken. Pensioners is an emotive one for obvious reasons, but when you look at it in the cold light of day it makes sense. I say that with parents who were affected.
