Haha, so you were just after information about who wrote that specific note, you weren't making a wider point at all? It's not whatabouterry to say it's a tradition they all do and had been doing for years until this one was leaked. It's context. You've admitted you didn't know of other examples and asked for some, I gave you them and now you're saying "i didn't ask whether anyone else had written similar notes anyway". My elderly parents aren't concerned about their financial situation, my dad's just annoyed he's not getting the free money he doesn't need. And I haven't belittled them either, I've just stated a fact. You're having a nightmare today Blueas.

Ah the classic TWTD twist. The oft used tactic used to win an argument. Yes my original question was to ask about a particular note left by a particular minister. So I wasn't aware of other such notes, that makes no difference whatsoever to the point I was making. Just plain old whatabouttery as I said. [Post edited 4 Feb 12:00]

strange that ordinary people will always pick on the poor and not the rich. it proves the right wing and their media is working. always the minorities and the poor to blame for everything. not the filthy rich who lined their pockets during the last 14 years

But in reality that's probably only ever going to hit the lower middle classes trying to improve the prospects for their children. I can't see it affecting the wealthiest to much. The problem is if the Labour Party and some Labour supporters can't see how bad taking away fuel payments from pensioners looks it makes you wonder about their competence going forward |
They could have at least tapered the cut-off for the WFA - not doing so shows a worrying lack of astute thinking and competence imho. They seem to have lacked a thinker behind the scenes putting together a joined up plan for the “most gain, least pain to ordinary people” (albeit at least they’re going after Mone).

Kier Starmer is now the on 11:46 - Feb 4 by The_Flashing_Smile | Oh right, you're happier with the policy that doesn't affect your family? You said hitting pensioners "rather than richer or more powerful targets". I gave you just one richer target they've also hit. There are others. Don't get me wrong, I'd like them to go further but in reality, as I said earlier, pretty much everyone needs to take a bit of a hit if we're to fix everything that's broken. Pensioners is an emotive one for obvious reasons, but when you look at it in the cold light of day it makes sense. I say that with parents who were affected. |
Quite the opposite really. My parents kept their fuel payments and I will be sending my daughter to a fee paying school in 18 months. It's just neither of these policies really effect the wealthiest in society and both give sh1te optics If you think Labour is aiming for the right sections of society then fair enough. I see their lack of understanding and consideration for some of the poorest in society a worry that will be used by the likes of Reform ( who care even less about the poorest in society) to scream that Labour are outta touch with working people etc.

Kier Starmer is now the on 11:49 - Feb 4 by BlueForYou | The State Pension is under half of the Minimum wage. Not everyone of that age has a second pension or huge savings. That WFA decision will not be forgotten & will haunt this Labour administration. It was cruel & foolish, & put them on the back foot before they hardly started. Not surprised they are struggling in the polls. |
It should also be noted that 2 out of every 3 pensioners are on the old, basic pension which is significantly lower than the new state pension.

Quite. In same position as you re small work pension; get by with additional income from renting out the annexe to my home, but the net profit £1,500 from that last year took me over the threshold so I then had to pay income tax on the total,to add insult to injury! Some people don’t realise the SP is a taxable income source. Plenty worse off of course, but UK pension rates are amongst the lowest in Europe I believe.

I agree. That was an appalling decision in three regards. 1. It was politically naive and reckless. 2. It didn't raise that much money. 3 More importantly, it lacked what I would regard as a key tenet of Labour philosophy, namely, fairness, given its effect on poorer pensioners. I don't think people with the political antennae of a Blair or a Campbell would have gone anywhere near such a policy, especially so soon into a Labour government.

TBF the people on that rate can claim pension credit etc and that brings them up to £4 below the new rate, They can then claim free dentistry and and eye tests etc that us just over the limit can’t get! [Post edited 4 Feb 12:56]

My parents-in-law only had the old basic pension and were just above the limit for pension credit. Had they been just below it, they would have been entitled to benefits and the like which would have far exceeded their pension. My father-in-law has since died and my mother-in-law is still above the limit for pension credit for single pensioners. She is though now entitled to attendance allowance which she has been told entitles her to pension credit and she has recently put a claim in for it.

Yer, I think you've pretty much nailed it there with those 3 points. I'm not suggesting politics or governing a country is easy but as you point out their political antennas seem so far off its not easy to comprehended. Don't put pensioners ( even those above the threshold ) into any kinda hardship. They have paid their taxes, done there dues. I don't want a single 1 of um worrying about the heating bills or whatever. [Post edited 4 Feb 13:04]
