It's so tribal it's impossible to discuss sensibly. This labour government and Prime Minister are shockingly bad examples of a labour govt but because they're labour, the same people will defend them to the hilt. Just as the same people defended the last conservative govt.

I agree. That was an appalling decision in three regards.

1. It was politically naive and reckless.

2. It didn't raise that much money.

3 More importantly, it lacked what I would regard as a key tenet of Labour philosophy, namely, fairness, given its effect on poorer pensioners.

I don't think people with the political antennae of a Blair or a Campbell would have gone anywhere near such a policy, especially so soon into a Labour government.

Very well put.

I don’t know what other economists there are in the PLP, but RR was a disastrous choice, and KS has been too blind in his support of her.

They seem to be rigidly following a line of being so stung by traditional jibes at Labour re not being able to handle the economy that they’re trying to prove the critics wrong by out-Torying the Tories!

I'm not sure that's true, obviously there will always be some people who are that tribal.
But his thread for example is full of Labour friendly people critiquing Labour's policies and there's countless examples of Torie friendly posters doing the same to them on previous threads.

Wouldn’t it be better is everyone received the higher pension and the need for Pension Credit was removed.

Well you would think so wouldn’t you, think of the time, effort and money saved in such a policy?
Hay ho that’s Govts for you never the simple option!

Yer, I think you've pretty much nailed it there with those 3 points.

I'm not suggesting politics or governing a country is easy but as you point out their political antennas seem so far off its not easy to comprehended.

Don't put pensioners ( even those above the threshold ) into any kinda hardship. They have paid their taxes, done there dues. I don't want a single 1 of um worrying about the heating bills or whatever.

There’s no room for nuance here mate - must tow the party line.

I find it interesting that many of those supporting the ditching of the WFA are using EXACTLY the same arguments as the Tories regarding austerity ‘we have to make sacrifices to fix the economy’. We voted out incompetents with cruel policies, only to get this lowest common denominator stuff.

The fact that by making pensioners worse off we still have a black hole, shows they are p1ssibg in the wind with this policy. What sacrifices are MP’s making, they can claim for heating a SECOND home. ‘We’re all in it together or something..’

It should also be noted that 2 out of every 3 pensioners are on the old, basic pension which is significantly lower than the new state pension.

Wow, I wasn’t even aware of that … thanks.

TBF the people on that rate can claim pension credit etc and that brings them up to £4 below the new rate,
They can then claim free dentistry and and eye tests etc that us just over the limit can’t get!
[Post edited 4 Feb 12:56]

Free dentistry would be huge, had to spend £2k from savings last year just for basic work.

Off to have a go at that calculator!

Only half those on the new state pension get the full amount.

Cue someone to say yes but they get pension credit and suffer fuel allowance.

“worryingly, 150,000 pensioners are receiving a state pension of less than £100 a week, or £5,200 a year, which is less than half the full new state pension.

In addition to this, more than 17,000 pensioners are receiving a state pension of less than £20 a week, while 5,677 people were receiving less than £10 a week.”.

Pretty shocking - people really need to be aware and take the advice to top up their contributions if they need and can.

If he is actually more unpopular than Truss then people are just thick. No other rational explanation.

Let’s not forget he only just got 20% of the voting publics share , it was down to the split across the parties , very few wanted Labour running the country !

I read somewhere that the Treasury offers abolition of WFA as an option to all incoming Chancellors but that Reeves was the first to fall for it.

I mean, who the F replies to these polls? I've never been asked what I think of the PM/government.
But a dictator is just bizarre. Voting for a dictator is an oxymoron.
This country is full of oxymorons.

Just as a matter of interest are any of you having a pop at pensioners actually living on one?
My wife and I are and as I have a small Army pension that lifts us out of any benefits that others may claim! If you all think it’s easy beware you will be here eventually!

No-one's having a pop at pensioners.

And no, I'm not living on one. They're not very big or comfortable.

Quite the opposite really.
My parents kept their fuel payments and I will be sending my daughter to a fee paying school in 18 months.

It's just neither of these policies really effect the wealthiest in society and both give sh1te optics

If you think Labour is aiming for the right sections of society then fair enough. I see their lack of understanding and consideration for some of the poorest in society a worry that will be used by the likes of Reform ( who care even less about the poorest in society) to scream that Labour are outta touch with working people etc.

You've moved the goalposts with every post. Now you're saying the wealthiest in society... yes I'd agree I'd like to see more of that. Although up to a point, we don't want to be driving away the business leaders who create the jobs.

I don't think Labour are going for the poorest in society. Most of the pensioners who now don't qualify for the £200/£300 handout aren't the poorest in society, and nor are the people sending their kids to private school.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

So you think that while the whole country is struggling, pensioners who don't need handouts should still get handouts?

I don't want any pensioners to struggle, obviously, so maybe the threshold should have been higher. But the idea that ALL pensioners should get this handout, regardless of wealth, when everyone else is struggling and services and infrastructure are on their knees, is surely wrong?

Trust the process. Trust Phil.
