I was secretary of my local Labour Party during the surge in membership under Jeremy Corbyn and no one who joined, or was an existing member, fits your description.

There was so much rubbish written about the influx of members under Corbyn's leadership. In my local branch new members at that time tended to fit in to two columns: Older former members who had been disillusioned with the party under Blair, and younger people enthused by politics for the first time. Those claiming that the majority were entrists from small far left sects clearly had no idea how few members groups such as the SWP actually had.

Look, I'm happy enough with their position on private tuition fees. But in reality that's probably only ever going to hit the lower middle classes trying to improve the prospects for their children.
I can't see it affecting the wealthiest to much.

The problem is if the Labour Party and some Labour supporters can't see how bad taking away fuel payments from pensioners looks it makes you wonder about their competence going forward

As a pensioner I wasn't annoyed because they took away the Winter fuel payment financial wise. It was the fact that they then proceeded to say "Well we have kept the Triple lock" meaning that pensioners will get around £400 more in April. That's as maybe, but take away the £200 WFP and that leaves £200. Now I don't mind admitting I get more than just my State Pension. But because the Personal Allowance stays at £12,570 I'll pay another £80 in tax. So the £200 now becomes £120. Council tax will go up by around £6 per month (estimated) so the £120 now becomes £38, Gas and electricity is going up again in April, Water rates up in April. Car tax up in April. I've never been the most smart chap as far as maths is concerned but to me it seriously looks like I will be worse off come the next tax year on April 6th.

Well of course not. They were all down the local wine bar.

From those I met, and this from an academic study on those who joined under Labour, I can assure they were not that type.

"Relative deprivation was plainly a significant factor that drove people, and particularly first-time joiners, to join Labour once a candidate with a clear radical profile was on the leadership ballot: those who might be labelled ‘left behind’ flocked to Jeremy Corbyn’s colours, including graduates earning less than the average income. Anti-capitalist values also appeared to be a feature of the new members, as was disenchantment with politics as usual and a yearning for a new style of politics. However, incentives like ideology mattered too. Post-2015 recruits who had previously belonged to the Labour Party and who rejoined it were more left wing. Demographic factors played only a limited part in understanding Labour’s membership surge, although it looks as if those in lower social grades seemed to be more likely than others to be attracted to the party. First-time joiners were not, on the whole, university graduates or high-income middle-class radicals; rather, they looked a little more like the party’s ‘traditional’ grassroots, being less educated and in lower status occupations than existing members. In addition, although first-time joiners were younger than returning members, the average post-2015 recruit is still middle aged."

I don't know the history but I can't say I like the way on this and other threads some people seem to target Flashing Smile in a rather unpleasant way.

I heard that in a recent poll, a quarter of young adults would prefer a dictator over the current system of accountability. That is actually shocking.

Why is it shocking though? The only experience young adults have in the uk of democracy is of successive useless governments, lying politicians and an endless increase in the cost of living.

So 10 years ago you say? So in today's money, it would probably be more like £150. Ouch! I take it the restaurant has big windows? Because they certainly saw you coming didnt they.

And also, do you not think it goes against your socialist ideals when there's people starving in the world, that you went out and paid that amount for a meal? I guess you're one of those champagne socialists. Or in this case, a sausage and mash socialist.

Dear oh dear, the state of this.

I've literally just said what the meal (by itself) costs today - £19.50.

I don't know where you live (Cloud Cuckoo Land?!) but £90 for a meal in a nice restaurant in London, for two, including drinks, is perfectly normal.

The idea that I shouldn't go out for a meal with my partner occasionally because there are people starving in the world, is bonkers even for you. Have you bumped your head or something today?

So you think that while the whole country is struggling, pensioners who don't need handouts should still get handouts?

I don't want any pensioners to struggle, obviously, so maybe the threshold should have been higher. But the idea that ALL pensioners should get this handout, regardless of wealth, when everyone else is struggling and services and infrastructure are on their knees, is surely wrong?

I do believe that the criteria for a pensioners income should be based on the same amount as a person on the minimum wage doing a 38 hour week or £12.21 an hour or £463.98 per week. Tax and N.I. would apply so a pensioner would be able to receive £20,000 a year. This could be made up by giving a higher taxable allowance once a person retires. If they continue to work unlike the current situation where a person who reaches State Pensionable age doesn't pay N.I. they would pay N.I. People reaching 60 years of age wouldn't get free prescriptions unless they had certain qualifying health issues and the £10 Christmas bonus would be scrapped.

So you just went out for dinner then? I've seen people mention the £90 sausage & mash loads of times, didn't realise it was the total cost of a dinner out for two.

Yep, that's it. Including drinks (I can't remember but there was probably a bottle of wine in there).

Ha! I'm not bothered about the £90 bangers and mash jibes, just find it a bit weird. It smacks of a small-town mentality thinking that was a shocking price to pay for a meal for 2 in London. And the way they belittle it by calling it bangers and mash just makes me laugh really.

Genuinely curious to know what Blueas deems a frivolous amount to spend on a meal for 2 with desserts and wine

No, not every long thread. Some, not all. In fact some of the recent threads that saw people get banned I didn't even know about until it was all over.

Maybe it is a failing of mine... but the thing is, when you don't respond people accuse you of running away from the debate (or swerving); when you do they accuse you of dragging out arguments (failing to see the irony that I'm conversing with them and they're responding to me, I'm not arguing by myself).

Ho, and indeed, hum.

i agree that he's a troll who says rubbish for attention, but the more casual/gullible readers on here may not realise that, so always fine to challenge him when he spouts his nonsense.

don't worry, if you've not got the patience for him, others will step up!

I'm pretty sure when he dropped the "Which former Treasury Chief left this note for his successor?" bombshell, and then argued the toss about it when shown to be wrong, he thought he was winning an argument.

I mean, if he is just a troll, aren't they meant to make other people look stupid?

You're OK in my view because I think you live in South Norwood, next to Thornton Heath, both of which I lived in, as did Stormzy.

That doesn’t appear to be true. Sunak, Truss and Johnson were all less popular at various times compared to Starmer’s current rating. Not by a lot though (except for Truss so was off the chart lol).
