Kier Starmer is now the on 14:34 - Feb 4 by The_Flashing_Smile | So you think that while the whole country is struggling, pensioners who don't need handouts should still get handouts? I don't want any pensioners to struggle, obviously, so maybe the threshold should have been higher. But the idea that ALL pensioners should get this handout, regardless of wealth, when everyone else is struggling and services and infrastructure are on their knees, is surely wrong? |
I would much rather have people who don't need it receive it than those who do need not receiving it. It's a ridiculous piece of politics as much as anything else, and doesn't even save a significant amount of money.

Whilst he also demanded those from the tories resigned for doing similar? Just so I’ve got the facts before I laugh at those saying how great he is. |
The attacks on Labour are relentless but this from the following article suggests nothing was done which breached the rules given it was a work situation. https://www.bbc.co.uk/newsround/55385397 [The rules] will be in place for an initial two-week period, being formally reviewed on 30 December [2020]. People living in Tier Four areas being asked to stay at home - although those who have to travel for education or work may continue to do so. No-one in Tier Four should travel to an area in Tiers One to Three, including for Christmas. [Post edited 4 Feb 15:15]

I'd say tax those who go out and pay £90 for sausage and mash. They've clearly got too much money

He gets a lot of stick for spending a lot of money on a meal. But very few would have remembered if he had mentioned that he spent £90 on a night out and drank far too much. Strange world.

It was about 10 years ago as well. The memories some people on here have, I really think they ought to be doing better things with them! And it wasn't "sausage and mash", that's just what Benters called it because he doesn't understand fine dining. It was, if I remember rightly, Käsekrainer at German Gymnasium - large smoked & grilled cheese pork sausage, sauerkraut, soft herbed mash potato and crispy onions, which by itself currently costs £19.50. I was out with the missus, so double that, then desserts, sides and drinks meant an overall cost of £90. Which really isn't that unusual, but there we go. This will all get forgotten, as it was at the time, and it'll go back to "Dollers spends £90 on bangers and mash". But that's TWTD for you!

So 10 years ago you say? So in today's money, it would probably be more like £150. Ouch! I take it the restaurant has big windows? Because they certainly saw you coming didnt they. And also, do you not think it goes against your socialist ideals when there's people starving in the world, that you went out and paid that amount for a meal? I guess you're one of those champagne socialists. Or in this case, a sausage and mash socialist.

Why are you so obsessed with what someone had for dinner 10 years ago rather than answering the question about why you wanted to know who left a note saying there was no money Very odd thing to get hung up on

So you just went out for dinner then? I've seen people mention the £90 sausage & mash loads of times, didn't realise it was the total cost of a dinner out for two.

Well because of the take up in pension credit by those who qualify it has cost the govt MORE than if they had just payed out the allowance to everyone! So nothing was saved by this decision was it? After all the reason given was it was unaffordable 🙄

Champagne socialist is such a lazy insult. It is basically saying that if you earn a certain amount of money you have no right to care about society. Or, if you do earn a fair bit, you’re not allowed nice things as somehow that’ll make you a hypocrite. You’re having a proper nightmare on this thread - the football equivalent being you thinking you’ll score from close range - only to hit the post, with the rebound smashing you in the balls and then rolling out for a goal kick. And then being promptly subbed off for Tony Dinning. [Post edited 4 Feb 16:22]

Well he was big into JC at the time when he was popular with Labour party supporters. I imagine he probably proudly announced "For the many, not the few" a few times as he sat round the table at his local wine bar with best pals Tarquin, Giles and Henry and and raised a glass of '67 Shiraz. "Its really great to have a truly socialist party again isn't it chaps? Oh who's up for hockey this weekend? I jolly well am"
