I'm completely fed up with having to deal with these types of pile-ons from the same users time and again. All long-term users, they've been asked nicely and not so nicely on many occasions in relation to various other posters. Some of it is trolling, some of it just plain bullying. I have to say that I thought 1 post in particular aimed at Flash/Dolly did completely cross a line yesterday. Though in that posters defence he did post a quite sincere apology very soon afterwards.
So what to do? Perhaps a week or 2 suspension?( I'd like to add in 50 hail marys and a daily contemplation of your forum behaviour) and then the threat of a longer ban if no improvement? |  | | |

But that rather proves the point - his (or other posters) views aren't a problem and didn't contribute to the issue on that thread. He didn't post a view about the topic - he just went for a dig at a particular poster (and wasn't the only one)
There may well be history/differences between a lot of posters and debates on appropriate topics shouldn't be a problem if people are respectful (on all sides)

Really good that you only locked the thread rather than deleting it; this means that “evidence” of previous comments remains available for reference.
I think a lot of historic arguments resurface because people disagree over what was actually said years (decades sometimes!) ago.
Lastly, I know you and Gav are too busy to watch every thread (and you shouldn’t have to), but there’s often a point at which seasoned posters know a thread’s about to go downhill. Would it be possible for Gav to add a kind of ‘lock hint’ alert for the times when the‘report abuse’ one is just too extreme? |

Two of them (I think it should be obvious who) are just trolls who add nothing to the forum IMO and their removal would improve TWTD. The sealioning and backpedalling around the infamous Liam Byrne letter (which anyone with any clue about politics knows was part of a running joke) was painful.

Every forum owner’s different, I don’t have the patience of a saint like Phil does, so when I ran my racing forum and found just a small handful of ‘high maintenance’ users caused 98% of problems, seriously eating up my time and impacting my stress levels, I used a yellow and red card system.
Second strike they were out permanently - and knew it in advance. As people were really keen to remain in the forum, those very clear boundaries worked like a dream - as it does for most toddlers ;) |  |

He said "hey Glasssers, how would like this if it was your mum"? I asked him not to use reference my mum as she was seriously ill and didn't have long to live. Most decent people would have apologised and left it there. Instead, Dolly doubled down over five or six posts to the extent that I called him a c**t.
Dolly reported that as abuse and you banned me. Twenty or more posters started a thread to get me reinstated and pointed out that Dolly's thread and subsequent posts were distatestful and it was understandable that I snapped. You took that on board and lifted the ban immediately. My mum died less than a week later.
As I said, I'm sorry Dolly's dad is unwell. How was I to know. But as soon as I read that I apologised and gave my sympathies. I didn't double down on my op.
We all have things going on in the real world that no one knows about. One of my twin daughters is having an MRI scan tomorrow for a suspected brain tumor. At the age of 22 FFS.
I haven't offered that forward and anyone having a pop at me wouldn't know that beforehand. And what my daughter is going through should not be a reason for posters not to take the iss out of me for some daft things I may have said in the past as I did with Dolly. I don't think this is an easy predicament tbf - just like social media in general, the discourse feels more toxic.
The ability to disagree on here (and in society as a whole) is a wider issue, we've lost the ability to have any nuanced discussion. As one example, there's still a thread with a comment referring to me as "Thick as pig sh1t", amongst others. Not naming the poster - they're generally one whose contributions I've enjoyed in my time here and think they make more of a contribution on here than I do, but there seems to be very little space for friendly disagreement in society as a whole.
I don't really know what you do - but I do have some concerns around whether children are properly safeguarded given some of what is discussed on here. | |

not sure that'd work as the more contentious, personal insults would only get a few downvotes from people who are invested/spot it
if someone says something genuinely stupid or trolly (football or political) then they often get a massive number, which indicates to the wider readership that someone's being an edgelord or just a bit ignorant. wouldn't want to lose that | |

I think the point is it crossed a line from being taking the piss out of daft things you might have said or done to misrepresenting them in an offensive, and potentially libellous, manner. It's far from the first time and your defence citing events from 11 years ago that I have little recollection illustrates how long this has been going on, not just with Dolly but other users. To be honest, I think we've reached the end of the road.

Totally agree but on this occasion nobody had called you out (on that thread) you just went a bit studs up on Flash- yes you withdrew it (but he'd already seen it) and it went from there.
I think taking the piss out of each other during conversations/friendly topics is fair game as long as people know each other well enough to know boundaries aren't being crossed but think it's a bit different when some just joins a thread to "take the piss" without any other engagement on the topic - the definition of playing the man, then it looks a bit more like a dig/abuse/stirring than friendly bantz | | | |
