Axel and Encisco out, Morsy/Davis? TEAM for Spurs 10:29 - Feb 18 with 5583 views | unstableblue | Two BIG games, against two large/historic clubs. Spurs a poor season but players coming back in from injury. Man U really struggling with injuries, and form. Getting toxic. Across the two games we need 3 points via a win, 4 and we’d be very pleased, 6 and we’d flip to being confident of survival. But these are still two top teams with talent. Wolves have Bournemouth away, then on the Tuesday Fulham at home. I wonder if we’ll go to Old Trafford with the ability to go above them? Spurs predicted line-up from their forum (the fighting cock): Vicario Spence - Danso - Davies - Udogie Bentancur - Bergvall Deki - Maddison - Son Tel Subs: Kinsky, Porro, Gray, Sarr, Bissouma, Johnson, Odobert, Moore, Scarlett As for us, I’d expect Davis and Morsy to be fit which raises questions. Encisco out I assume. Axel suspended. Assume Szmodics back. Summaries of teams injury latest here: https://www.premierinjuries.com/teams/ipswich-town I’d go: ——————-Palmer Johnson—OShea—Greaves—Davis ——————-Phillips—Cajuste ——-Hutchinson—Szmodics—Clarke ————————Delap Subs: Muric, Godfrey, Townsend, Wolf, Morsy, Taylor, Jaden, Hirst, Broadhead A four with only Hutchinson and Clarke ahead of the weaker defenders Johnson and Davis, does look a little weak for Spurs width though?!?! What would you go for?

My team too. Surprised nobody is suggesting Godfrey. He's the automatic Axel replacement in terms of player profile.

Good point Hoppy. No doubt he’s done some really good stuff of late. It I do think there is lots more to come from Clarke and he’s building confidence now. I think he can eventually carry more threat and assists than Broadhead. And his cameo at Villa Park was encouraging after Coventry. Better pressing and defective stuff - did get beat once. But he made two clever and difficult forward passes that cut through Villa. Good problems to have. Also have Jaden. McKenna was speaking at length or Philogene on the Villa Park pitch at full time, perhaps explaining his lack of game time.

….by him so far, the thought that we’d bring him in as an alternative to Axel when required, and then not use him as an alternative to Axel when required is a bit odd!

Fair question. I imagine KM felt O'Shea/Woolfie both in there was more conducive to sitting very deep, closing spaces and blocking stuff. Which worked out pretty well to be fair. [Post edited 18 Feb 11:20]

….with us down to 10 men. Plus Townsend instead of Davis gave the defence a difference balance in terms of attacking threat. And we were away from home. I don’t think you can really use it as an indication, too many variables.

Agree huge blow not to have Axel against Son as he was brilliant in the Spurs win, and probably one of our best players. Fortunately Son is off form at the moment. I always saw Godfrey as right sided centre back, rather than full back. As he played in a five in between Johnson and OShea (and had real issues between him and Johnson against Man City) But yes he could well come in with Johnson in the more advanced role. Johnson is an enigma - great moments against Villa, but then was easily beaten by Rashford twice.

He started well at this level, but games do pass him by imo, he's skipper so absolutely have him on that bench to come on and help late on, but If we are to have any hope of staying up, it won't happen if Morsy starts. I'd like to see Palmer O'shea Wolfenden Greaves Townsend Phillips Cajuste Hutchinson Broadhead J Clarke Delap

I suppose it will come down to whether we go a bit more attacking this weekend, with 3 'attacking' players in behind Delap, or whether we go for a bit of balance with Johnson on the right. FWIW, I would start Godfrey also, but just think McKenna might opt to go Johnson again, which makes me think it'll be Woolfenden who comes in.

Feels like a massive risk to do that. Could also see Hutch/Broady/Clarke as the three behind. But Godfrey can be quite an attacking outlet so think he would dovetail relatively well with Johnson.

Yes, we seem to have had a better strike rate with cheaper championship players than pricey ones! I wasn't so impressed by Townsend in the last Cup game, but he's looked comfortable at all other times, and relished the backs to the wall vibe against Villa. It may be that Palmer's introduction will just make us more solid and confident at the back generally. But Townsend's solidity certainly isn't doing any harm, and at least we know we don't have to rush Davis back before he's 100% ready.

I’m sure if Davis is fit he comes straight back in, he’s a quality player, a key part of our forward play. And his defending has improved a little through the season. BUT, as Phil and Kallum were discussing on TWTV, Townsend is a true full back and defender as compared to Leif. And Townsend seems to bring significantly more solidity. He was blocking out pretty much all the Villa crosses!

That or maybe McKenna remembered how badly Johnson and Godfrey were as a pair against Manchester City and decided against it. If so, I'll go for. Palmer O'Shea - Woolfenden - Greaves Johnson - Phillips - Cajuste - Townsend Hutchinson - Broadhead Delap Subs: Muric, Godfrey, Burgess (Davis), Luongo (Morsy), Taylor, Philogene, Clarke, Mendel (Szmodics), Hirst

Godfrey was on the bench against Villa but KMc preferred to bring on Woolfenden and move O’Shea over.
