Fear of flying 21:20 - Feb 20 with 3911 viewsTresBonne

Anyone on TWTD struggle with it as well? Bricking myself over tomorrow's 3hr flight to Romania. It's such a p*ssy move I know, and I must have flown about 50 times in my life so I don't know why I've got worse with age.

Hate the uncomfortableness of turbulence and all the plane moving up and down. Again, I know it's not dangerous, just scares fck out of me.

Advice appreciated...

I always find 2-3 beers beforehand relaxes me, take off landing and turbulence is horrendous for me, but a few chilled beers helps calm the nerves.

Get a couple of G&Ts down your neck. I found flying aircraft cured my fear of flying but that's not for everyone.

There may not be enough time before you outward flight but I had a needle phobia and bought for not much money a short booklet on how to overcome it.

Maybe there is something similar for flying (but not the Erica Jong book!)

And I came across this. It's about 23 minutes long but I think you have to sign up to the course at the end to get the benefits.

That may, however, not help if you spend the time away worrying about the flight back.

Same, although not quite as bad nowadays. Body just tenses up, nothing I can do to stop it. Remember you're going over land for 90% of the flight, if the engines fail you can still glide into an airport. I think. Also take a look at a flight tracker app showing hundreds of planes not crashing.

Also, no airliner has ever been brought down by turbulence.

I've never had a fear of flying but I went on a flight once to Thailand with a friend who kept talking about how scared he was - that in turn made me scared. Haven't had any problems since but based on this experience, the key is simply not to think about it. Listen to music the whole flight and if you have any intrusive thoughts try and block them out before they take hold. Alcohol might help but I don't think that's a long term solution

It's an irrational fear - airline pilots are highly professional...

What do you mean? I thought alcohol was a solution to all

Doctors will prescribe a small amount of valium for flying, which has helped me. A bit late for your flight tomorrow, but for future reference.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

Oh really? That's awesome, I'll look into that for future reference!

Planning on taking some of my missus' sleeping tablets and hope I wake up in Bucharest.

Mate's son tried a trial flight to Belfast prior to a summer holiday as he'd never flown before. He got to the gate then decided he couldn't do it and ran screaming to be let out. He might have to try hypnosis or something.

I always remind myself that:

1) the maths that makes the whole plane work is amazing
2) the wings can flex by up to several metres without any issue
3) the crew do this several times a day
4) the acceleration down the runway is the best fairground ride there is and a privilege to experience.

Enjoy the trip!

It's 106 miles to Portman Road, we've got a full tank of gas, half a round of Port Salut, it's dark... and we're wearing blue tinted sunglasses.

A friend did one of the fear of flying courses, I think it was through BA or Virgin and it seems to have worked for him. He said he has little to no anxiety about flying now vs before where he’d be fretting weeks before the flight.

Worth a look…for today though, as above, couple of drinks and you’ll be good.

It's an added extra only offered to passengers they like, like when I was offered to join the Mile High Club. I obviously refused, as it sounds dangerous to only fly at 1,600 metres.

Firstly, anxiety about anything is a very debilitating thing, so don't consider it a p*ssy move.

Secondly airline travel is the safest of all public transport, with chances of a fatality being 1 in 40 million and these odds increase year on year as the airline safety industry is one of the most forward thinking and established safety regulators in the world.

Thirdly (and this is more about fear and anxiety in general) you can only control so many things in life, and this is where you need to focus. For a holiday you control the aspects such as making sure you have your passport, leaving on time, packing the right things. You can't control aspects such as delays to travel or controlling the plane - it is a waste of emotional energy to focus and therefore worry about things that are out of your control.

I will add however that it has taken a number of years of CBT and other counseling methods to get to this perspective, but maybe start with your view of this flight . . .

Just think about it statistically. You have a 0.000001% chance of dying in a plane crash. That really isn't a number worth worrying about.
