RFK Jr is turning out as expected then 12:54 - Mar 23 with 4646 viewsStokieBlue

This was expected but his views are so far removed from the actual science that it's hugely dangerous to have him as US health secretary.

He wants to use a "let it rip" strategy with regards to Bird Flu, something which the experts have said won't work (birds die too quickly to get antibodies) exposing more humans to infected birds and creating more opportunities for the required mutations to arise to make the jump to humans [1].

Measles is now spreading quickly throughout Texas and other parts of the country where vaccination rates are struggling to reach herd immunity and a child actually died for the first time in a decade. RFK Jr still promotes the fallacy that the MMR vaccine is unsafe which isn't helping with vaccination rates and instead he's pushing completely unproven treatments such as cod liver oil [2].

Hugely disappointing and actually dangerous both for people in the US and further afield.

Interesting articles. There was serious concern around bird flu in this country in the mid 2000s. I did actually see some of the stuff on it and it’s not to be taken lightly. That Jr is coming out with the nonsense he is says more about him than anything else.

As for his treatment suggestions for measles, have they considered swallowing bleach instead of cod liver oil. That’ll cure it for sure! And everything else….permanently.

RFK Jr really is a Kentucky Fried idiot.

I seem to remember Dominic Cummings had a very similar outlook about COVID-19, before we think "it wouldn't happen here"

Not really the same thing is it.

Dominic Cummings was an advisor and not (technically) in control of any policies. RFK Jr is the US health secretary.

He also wasn't pushing totally discredited vaccine theories from such a position of power.

Not sure why there is an effort to seek some equivalence here.

If he is contemplating this it must be due to the shortage of eggs in the US that I read about the other day as a result of bird culls.

https://www.msn.com/en-gb/politics/government/us-goes-door-to-door-in-europe-beg

"The average cost of a dozen large eggs jumped to an all-time high of $5.90 in February from around $2.50 just one year earlier, the consumer-price index showed. Even wholesale prices have topped $10 a dozen in some states."

And Trump has apparently been begging for eggs.

I don't think it's related to the egg shortage, I think it's purely ideological from him. He doesn't respect or believe the conclusions of experts.

Trump doing incredibly poorly on reducing prices which was one of the main reasons many voted for him. That's only likely to get worse with his tariffs.

There are some similarities in that advisors without scientific understanding held more sway with people who wanted to hear that than the experts. Too much of had enough of experts.

Of course, the potential for the current situation in the US is far worse.

I wasn't suggesting it wasn't ideological, only that such a situation will have spurred him into action and may well persuade Trump to get on board.

Trump will claim prices are coming down in vague terms ' they tell me, I'm hearing things that prices are down' and people will still believe him despite the evidence in front of their own eyes.

Following on from the removal of people from committees that collate the financial data, Trumps team has decided to change the way that inflation is calculated according to commerce secretary and nutjob Howard Lutnick
I predict they'll make a hash of that too.
The Federal reserve will release their figures, but Trump will say they are wrong and that his 'people' have told him it's lower.
Trump will just pick a figure that sounds right and broadcast that.

Don't believe a word I say. I'm only kidding. Or am I?

Wasn't the experts' advice to lockdown early so that it wouldn't be as long and damaging as it ended up? Instead it was delayed and more lives were lost and then the lockdown had to be much longer and more severe.

I think that was the general consensus from experts at the time. However Johnson’s crowd were already long suspicious re experts and viewed them as an enemy to getting things done (and lining their own pockets). But they did listen to them in the end even if they did make a far bigger mess of handling Covid than they should have done.

They were rightly thrown out and should have been for this alone, let alone everything else they ballsed up.

I’m not sure the authoritarian, dictator loving Trump-Republicans will be voted out for a long time. I think they’ll try and tear up the opposition, jail them etc and amend the constitution.

Back to the point, Kennedy’s incompetence and craziness will cost a lot of lives. But people like that oaf don’t care about minor details like that. Roll on cod liver oil!

I’m out Weds evening with a former work chum who hails from Chicago (married an English woman hence spending half the year here). His not particularly political, but I’ll be interested in his thoughts, if he offers them.

Yes, the experts agreed that the harm caused by the compulsory Covid restrictions on the entire UK population (including 15 million aged 21 and under) was miniscule in comparison to the harm caused by the voluntary evacuation during WW2 of 3 million people (mainly children).

Interestingly, in the first three days of official evacuation, 1.5 million people were moved: 827,000 children of school age; 524,000 mothers and young children (under 5); 13,000 pregnant women; 7,000 disabled people and over 103,000 teachers and other 'helpers'.

The government overestimated demand: only half of all school-aged children were moved from the urban areas instead of the expected 80%.

In terms of WW2 evacuation, it’s important to look at it in the context of the time. There was a genuine fear that cites and their populations would literally be wiped out. It looked for that moment in time like the least worst option.

Nobody had any idea what the effects on the individuals would be. I’m not sure people really thought that way. It was only after the event that sort of thing came out. It’s not a subject I know a lot about tbh. I know for some children their lives improved, for many others not.

My mum, her sister and two brothers were evacuated from Yarmouth to Retford early in the war, but were there for just a couple of months. My grandmother wouldn’t have it. My mum, who was about 14 enjoyed the adventure and was desperate and destined to leave home as soon as she could anyway (and did to the ATS as soon as allowed in about 1943).

My dad and his brother were due to be evacuated to Detroit. My grandad’s cousin worked in the car factories there and had a nice place and even a car for them to play around with. It was all arranged. Then a ship called City of Benares was sunk with evacuees on board and my grandmother put an immediate stop to it.

Now given Ipswich and Yarmouth were never going to be threatened in the same way London and the cities were they were considered possibilities for invasion areas and it’s a good indicator of the fear people had for their children and the speculation as to what might happen. Nobody really knew.

What is remarkable was how quickly this country mobilised. It was the only one to engage in total war and unlike Germany and most others, right across the world too. Everybody played their part, whether women working in factories, land, people like my mums dad who was part of a recovery crew (propping up buildings, digging out people - he even had to get a child’s head down off a roof). My dad’s father was a special constable, everybody did something.

Britain’s mobilisation and conversation to a wartime economy is an amazing story that deserves to be properly written about as it’s basically unique.

Cummings is adamant going for herd immunity was a Gov strategy, not something he personally advocated. Pre lockdown comments from Vallance implied there was scientific support for that approach too, until the number of predicted deaths resulted in abrupt denials that this was ever on the table. As for RFK, and the US in general, it is quite astonishing what is going on there. If they weren’t so blessed with resources, goodness knows what sort of mess they would be in.

Well it looks like they are looking to bless themselves with other people’s resources too. But there it is. I never thought it’d happen again, but might is right and in the new world order they and anyone who can will take as they please.

Herd immunity was certainly something Johnson was keen on (let the bodies pile high).not least because it was cheap. From what I remember it was only scenes from abroad and the estimate of the body count that even that sad sack of gristle Johnson had second thoughts.

Anyway, this strays from the point. Kennedy is an old fashioned nut job who is going to be responsible for an awful lot of deaths with his stance on just about everything based presumably on voices in his head.

According to NY Post, hobbies include falconry, training ravens and keeping a pet emu.

‘In a social media video, Kennedy laid out his bizarre stunt to skin and use the bear for meat after finding it dead during a falconing trip in Goshen.

He said he put the bear in his trunk and drove it to New York City, where he had a dinner but ended up having to ditch the carcass so he could catch a flight.

“I’ve been picking up roadkill my whole life. I have a freezer full of it,” Kennedy told The Post with a laugh while leaving court Wednesday. “A thousand cubic foot freezer full of roadkill.”

Bonkers and very dangerous.

This is my favourite bit:

“He ran down to the beach with a chainsaw, cut off the whale’s head and then bungee-corded it to the roof of the family minivan for the five-hour haul back to Mount Kisco, New York.

“Every time we accelerated on the highway, whale juice would pour into the windows of the car, and it was the rankest thing on the planet. We all had plastic bags over our heads with mouth holes cut out, and people on the highway were giving us the finger, but that was just normal day to day stuff for us.”

And this cretin is Secretary for Health and Human Services. Good luck with that one America!
