Have to say, I'm in the camp of disapproving of this sort of thing. I work in local government and the culture is that you absolutely can't accept freebies. On the rare occasions we can, it has to be related to the day job, eg a free ticket and lunch to an industry specific event. If a contractor offered me a ticket to the football, for instance, I'd have to say no.
It's not the same as getting freebies offered if you work in the private sector, as its about the way that public money gets spent. It's the way of the world in the private sector to buy a bit of favour with a few freebies, but the public sector can't have anything that suggests money isn't being spent purely on need/merit.

I would agree. Blair for me is a centre left leaning liberal - and how much he leans left is a matter of opinion.

Again spot on - shouldn’t be allowed across the board anything over £25 in value gifted has to be declared in the NHS, and if you were caught not declaring you would be in big trouble so feels grossly wrong on every level.

I think that all politicians regardless of rank or party should be careful when accepting freebies.
Just because such gifts and hospitality are declared and transparent I don’t think makes things ok.
I don’t think that this is an example of sleaze but it could be seen as an example of conflict or corruption - if in the future [for example] Tech firms are given a tax refund and previously they had paid for events for high profile politicians to enjoy, it’s not a good look.
I understand that hospitality is a key component for some sectors, but I’m sure that a PM and Chancellor etc can learn about industries etc (and form key relationships) without accepting gifts. [Post edited 24 Mar 13:44]
