What stops us winning the Championship next year? 15:59 - Mar 26 with 8986 views | Chris_ITFC | Last year we finished 2nd. Then spent £100m on that team. If football was logical, we’d walk it, but…

If we go down, we’ll certainly be one of the three to four favourites. So who knows. At least we’ll see a few more wins whatever happens.

There's always one that has to take it too far, isn't there? I think the OP was after realistic reasons?

What stops us winning the Championship next year? on 16:24 - Mar 26 with 4728 views | Mullet | This sort of complacency in your first sentence being taken as received wisdom. We are about to lose a standout striker, have no midfield, possibly two goalkeepers off and several potential exits/ loans ending throughout the squad. If anyone thinks we don’t have a lot of work to do with or without McKenna they’re not paying attention.

It’s very strange isn’t it. Potentially, we could only have one or two left from those who started our last match. Hopefully we’ll hang on to more than I expect, but I think some people are going to be disappointed if they think we’ve bought a title winning side for next year already. We will have money to spend that’s beyond the wildest dreams of most of the rest of the league though, so we’ll be in a good position. Just not with most of this team.

What stops us winning the Championship next year? on 16:31 - Mar 26 with 4647 views | J2BLUE | What if we finish 19th and Leicester finish 18th? It's going to be a battle. I think Town would bounce back under McKenna but Southampton and Leicester will be strong. Birmingham will spend. 1-2 of Leeds, Sheff U and Burnley could not get promoted. We'll be one of the favourites. Rebuilding CM will be key as will bringing in two strikers (assuming Delap definitely leaves which he will).

I hope whoever DOES go up from this seasons Championship actually have a chance of staying up, as if not and all three go straight back down again, then the other 17 teams in the Premier League as it is at the moment will just keep on strengthening - they've currently had 6 transfer windows since any of them last got promotion.

What stops us winning the Championship next year? on 16:40 - Mar 26 with 4565 views | HighgateBlue | I'm not sure we really know how many of our successful acquisitions will still be with us. Also McKenna's situation will have a big impact. He may well stay, but there's got to be a chance that someone still sees him as the coming man.
What stops us winning the Championship next year? on 17:09 - Mar 26 with 4410 views | PrideOfTheEast | Whilst not necessarily logical, football has become more predictable. Would be surprised if we’re not in the top 3 even with the inevitable significant change that relegation will bring.

I imagine they’ll approach recruitment slightly differently to give themselves a chance. It’ll be interesting though as very difficult to identify one of the current crop who will screw up to such an extent that it’ll mean relegation.

Where's this 'no midfield' thing coming from? Just because Phillips and Cajuste are unlikely to be there?

We will have a disjointed team that is going to take some skill and patience to re-build. Cajuste is going to be a big hole to fill. It's going to be fun though.

Some people think Morsy and Taylor aren't good enough presumably which is weird. Surely this is an area we would look to bring in players, and we could have someone like Humphreys back.
What stops us winning the Championship next year? on 17:35 - Mar 26 with 4262 views | Joey_Joe_Joe_Junior | If KM stays and we can get a more set front 4 firing, we should be fine. From the odd game I've seen of the champ this year, if anything it's got worse. The noticeable difference in terms of press and space during that Cov game, was very evident. I expect Delap and Hutch to go, Davis more of a coin toss. Then 4 or 5 squad members/fringe players also will be out. Hopefully some welcome additions. Of course, CM recruitment will be key, along with another Striker to compliment or battle with Hirst. We should hopefully have a fairly elite level attack for a division down. Humphreys has done well in League One this season with Wycombe. He is unknown in the Championship as he's only had 3 Championship appearances. Only one start, one 87th minute sub, and one 89th minute sub.

In some ways, it might be better if City get relegated whilst we get promoted

As well as Mass obviously. Morsy is turning 36 and looks on the downward and Taylor hasn’t suggested he’s the partner for Sam to dominate the league. Likewise if Taylor is up to snuff the other alternatives like Humphreys as a partner would be incredibly lightweight for a Saturday-Tuesday grind like the Championship. Theres no way we don’t need to rebuild our midfield.

Leicester and Southampton will be thinking the same. Hopefully we can keep McKenna and keep O'Shea, Davis, Greaves, Woolfenden, Hutchinson, Philogene, Clarke, Hirst. Keep 6 of that 8 and with the likes of Burns, Chaplin, Szmodics, Woolfy, Palmer, Taylor etc we've got the basis of a very strong squad. It won't come easy though.

On what basis is it one of the toughest leagues for relegated teams to get out of? Come the end of May, it's looking very likely that all 3 relegated sides from 2023 will have been promoted (Leics and Southampton immediately, Leeds the season after), and 2 of the 3 relegated sides from 2024 will be promoted if Sheff Utd and Burnley go up - both will finish in the top 3 and the play offs isn't a lottery any more with Blackpool the last 6th place team to win them for example, some 15 years ago. Luton are the outlier and I don't see anything to suggest that's our benchmark.

Burgess, Muric, probably Walton too as he won’t want to be missing another season. Harness and Luongo are gone too I think.
