Delap £40 million from City with a loan back on 22:01 - Apr 6 with 3378 views | BarcaBlue | He's on the verge of the England squad, he's not going to be playing in the Championship next season. He's unlikely to want it and who would pay 40 million for a player to then loan them out to a league below? Just won't happen.
Delap £40 million from City with a loan back on 22:03 - Apr 6 with 3357 views | itfc48 | He’ll have shortage choice of suitors however I think having already been at City he’ll be wary of going to a club where he’s not likely going to be a regular starter. I hope he doesn’t go there however West Ham probably a good fit given their style and lack of a decent striker. Brentford too if they sell Wissa.

Heard we've been seriously discussing loaning him next season, big loan fee with an obligation if we don't get back up. If we do, every chance he is worth considerably more than if we sell this summer. Suspect Villa and Forest will be front of the line for him either way.

I hope this is true and it happens! I guess the downside would be we might have to allow 1 or 2 others to move on to help the finances.

I think he'd thrive at United depressingly. I was hoping they'd collapse and this nadir would be permanent. I'm assuming City want him to go for big money as it weakens their rivals if they spend more, and they get a bigger cut.

Is there an obvious reason he didn't get a bigger move last summer? Is it just no one else was willing to pay the money? Were they even interested? In hindsight someone mid table should have snapped him up.

Not at that level, Southampton were interested, as we know, but not sure who else. His stock was a long way from where it is now.

It was a smart move from Town, I knew he had talent but he has been a big success Where I think we have failed was not getting that senior number 9 in, I can't believe the plan in the summer was for a former Hull winger to be our star man

Said exactly this at the start of the season. So naive from the powers that be within ITFC that they didn’t get a deal like that done

I don't believe anyone would disagree with this, but a) who might that have been that we could afford, and would have come to a promoted club, expected to be battling relegation and b) we don't know who they may have tried to sign, but failed (there were ofc a couple of rumours, but who's to say there wasn't more going on)

It was clear we were in for Ioanidis and then got Broja all but done before pulling out. There is obviously a balance between getting in someone and aiming for someone better. How many fans would have been happy to see Kieffer Moore come in with weeks of the window left instead of going for the others? By the time we missed out, Moore, Latte Lath, etc were no longer available.

I wonder if Chelsea might try and include Broja in any deal. They could be skint in PSR terms given everything rests on the ridiculous valuation they put on their women’s team.

The two that didn't happen would have fallen into into that category, but didn't happen as was well documented. For me nether Moore or Latte Lath fit that category of a senior No 9 that would have made a difference. Latte Lath would have been a gamble at the level, and Moore was ok but not spectacular for us in the Championship. Both I would see being good for us in the Champs, less so in the PL. Post edit: but I guess better than nothing. [Post edited 7 Apr 16:02]

To play devil's advocate, if we had got a senior number 9 in (say Ionnidis), do we think that Delap would have developed such a reputation that quickly? Maybe he would have been reduced to cameos plus the odd start in the right sided role? As discussed ad nauseam, it is unlikely that adding an additional established striker to the squad would have closed the 12 point gap that currently exists, so maybe we have ended up developing an asset far faster for much more profit and without the outlay required for that additional player Yet another Ashton masterclass...

Doesn't that completely support my point. Why sign someone who is not really what you want in case you can't get what you do want? By the time what we do want fell through, it was too late to sign the ones we didn't want but wwould have been better than nothing. It is quite clear we are playing a long game but the likelihood is we will be looking more in the Moore or Latte Lath market next season unless we can find a promising Prem youngster to loan. We aren't going to attract a Ioanidis or Broja in the Championship unless their stock has fallen so low no Premier team wants them (which I doubt).

Led to believe Chelsea tried in January. Does anyone on here have any clarity on the clause that clearly exists? I was led to believe it was a matching clause, but it this £40m figure seems to be widely accepted across almost every publisher

It felt like they put all their eggs in the Broja basket and didn't really have a backup In January we were linked with Michy Batshuayi who eventually joined Frankfurt instead, I can't believe he wouldn't have considered a loan if we had offered it
