Not confirmed yet is it? Just in government control for now?

Hopefully it will be the start of nationalising the railways and water.

How did they suggest paying for it as a matter of interest since they are a party of low taxation and low spend?

Didn’t see the tweet with that in I have to confess but I assume places like Scunthorpe that are largely white and poor, will be seen as their target constituency.

They can divert some of the £350m per week from the Brexit hospitals dividend.

May have changed now as not seen the news today, but wasn't the suggestion just to take it in house until a buyer can be found?

No idea when I began here, was a very long time ago. Previously known as Spirit_of_81. Love cheese, hate the colour of it, this is why it requires some blue in it.

If you factor in something for inflation, probably nearer £400 mill per week

If they've got any sense they'll also do something about the energy 'market' too. Owning a steel works with the highest energy costs in Europe isn't really a great position from a commercial perspective.

I think it was already halfway done by the time they had a say.

The last furnace went off at the end of September but the process had started in July.

The Bill doesn't confer power to renationalise British Steel but it does enable the government to make sure the plant is kept operational.

I wouldn't be surprised if renationalisation does follow, but new legislation will be required for that.

To be fair on them, they did have a policy of defunding and selling off the "unaffordable" NHS so that is probably correct (without the need for the Brexit lie part of it).

Before we begin celebrating, it's worth considering that Jingye wanted to close it down because it was losing £700k a day. British steel production has been in decline for decades. There's a reason for that and that reason is its no longer economically viable to produce steel in the UK. So our govt have basically bought a white elephant and will presumably prop up the losses with taxpayers money.

But hey, nationalisation woop woop!

Heard a BBC docu (must have been 2+ yrs ago) explaining how it's a particular kind of quality steel that we really need which is important to make here in UK. Can't remember the details though.

There's something structurally wrong if we were to become the only G7 nation unable to produce its own steel. Fix the cause, not the symptom.
In such an unstable world, it's the only option - regardless of your ideological opposition to public ownership.

Materials science is a very important industry and steel is one of the most important materials within it. There are huge amounts of different alloys within the collective term "steel" and their quality can be especially critical in many situations.

Not sure what that is? For example the high quality steel used in submarine pressure hulls can no longer be sourced in the UK and has to be sourced from abroad.

They haven't bought anything yet, but will pay to keep it operational.

I imagine they would prefer not to nationalise, and will be hoping to reach some sort of deal or takeover in preference to nationalisation.

The only real reason to nationalise steel is if it’s a monopoly IMHO - which it sort of is at the moment isn’t it.

Private ownership is completely different to overseas ownership.

Starmer did the correct thing and fair play to him for recalling parliament. Reliant on foreign steel is as bad as being reliant on foreign energy. You never know when you need to re arm.

The key thing with Scunthorpe being that once the blast furnaces are allowed to go cold, they effectively can't be restarted. It's a resource gone forever, the only place in the UK currently where steel can be produced from raw iron ore (arc furnaces cannot do that). Hence the urgency to keep them operating, despite losses.

If we discard them, the country then has to subsist entirely upon imported slab steel. Probably from China. It's a Chinese company which owns Scunthorpe and wants to run it down. To paraphrase what British parliamentarians said during the debate, "Funny, that".

So, essentially, it's a strategic resource. Are we prepared to throw that away, at a time of increasing volatility in world trade? The fact that even the Green Party is in favour of preserving this very dirty process indicates how important everyone thinks it is (except the Conservatives, who don't want '80s/'90s privatisation to be seen as a mistake).

Who knows, with a bit of investment and marketing, perhaps those losses can be reduced?

Good Lord! Whatever is it?
