Not football - but northern towns southern equivalents - and vice versa 22:44 - Apr 19 with 1656 views | Lord_Lucan | Was walking the hound this morning with RKD and we were discussing this. RKD resides in Sheffield and we thought Portsmouth to be Sheffields southern brother. We then thought about Ipswich and decided on Bolton. What say?

Not football - but northern towns southern equivalents - and vice versa on 22:55 - Apr 19 with 1574 views | Pique | I would personally argue that Sheffield is a lot nicer than Portsmouth. Never been to Bolton so can't comment on that. Bristol and Liverpool feels like sort of equivalents to me - both port cities that have been through some tricky times but with fine centres now. Both have excellent cultural offerings, food and music scenes.

Thinking about it, I said Sheffield / Portsmouth and RKD said Sheffield / Bristol but I argued Bristol didn't count because it's East Wales.

I have never been to Sheffield but portsmouth is an absolute sh1thole, Sheffield must be better than that. Bristol is too cool to be east wales. Maybe wales is west Bristol. I would match Luton and Blackpool. Both skag central.

I'd have said Bristol's counterpart would be Norwich, altho the latter is much less cosmopolitan.

Agree. Have always said this. I obviously dislike the football team but Norwich is a fine city with largely nice folk. Always enjoyed time in Bristol. Sheffield is fantastic not least because it's 15 minutes from the peaks, where one can run, cycle, hike and climb until blue in the face.

I'd have paired Swindon with Doncaster or Crewe. Southampton/Middlesbrough? Crawley/Skelmersdale? Reigate/Harrogate? [Post edited 20 Apr 10:51]

I like your Swindon/Doncaster/Crewe. All great railway towns. Many steam locomotives built in all three.

Both Sheffield and Portsmouth (and Leeds) have improved no end in recent years. Albeit from a very low bar. Luton? Dear god. And as for Blackpool, it’s about the worst place I’ve ever been to. It makes Yarmouth look like Monte Carlo by comparison. Worse than Blackburn even and that’s dreadful. It has literally nothing going for it. The locals seem a bit weird, pubs terrible and the nosebag is poor to bar one thing. The best full English breakfast I’ve had in years. Fried bread AND toast, mountains of smoked bacon, good quality sausages, mushrooms, not too many beans, egg, hash browns, tomato served on a meat platter - and a massive mug of strong breakfast tea to wash it down…… I digress. Where would I compare Ipswich to? Not sure tbh. Brighton probably, though the latter is more stylish. Places to like: I confess I like Norwich the place (just get rid of Sidecar Bob Sargent and his fellow mugs in bilious yellow), Bristol, the little Kent coast towns, York, Lincoln, quite like Nottingham and Cardiff. But for somewhere large, Birmingham had improved until the rats took it over. You can’t beat London though. Great city.
Not football - but northern towns southern equivalents - and vice versa on 17:29 - Apr 21 with 498 views | WeWereZombies | Lancaster / Colchester (Historic cities, castles, garrisons) Crewe / Swindon (Railways, underachieving football teams) Durham / Bath or Oxford or Exeter (Universities, cathedrals, political or religious significance) Clitheroe, Middlesborough, Stoke-on-Trent / Norwich (dark satanic mills or something...) Nottingham / Ipswich - Nottingham isn't as maritime and Ipswich isn't a city but there is something both workaday yet pioneering about both conurbations.
