Why is it still called the Champions League? 18:36 - Apr 20 with 1133 viewsChrisd

If you can qualify for this tournament by finishing 5th?! I really do miss the old format, but that sadly is not going to generate monies for the coffers!

Change the fecking name at least.

It's all a bit of a farce.

How can 25% of the division qualify for the "Champions" League? (It was actually more than 25% from last season's Bundesliga in this year's competition as that division contains only 18 clubs and 5 of them went into the CL.)

I lost interest years ago, only the other day i realised theres also a "conference" league and "europa" league. Was going to google what they were and the difference between them.

Me too. Used to be excited about watching United compete in Europe in the 90s. I know loads of people disliked them for various reasons but I used to support the English clubs in Europe. Was easier to track when there were just a couple in it but now it’s half the division playing on a Thursday night or whatever against somebody from Ukraine or wherever. Load of rubbish.

The old format meant you got loads of mickey mouse Champions in it, it's a harder tournament to win nowadays

But significantly easier to qualify. Could argue it either way.

That said European knockout football last week had some decent watches especially compared to the boring predictability of the PL

Arguably you could have never been domestic champions ever in the team’s entire history and still qualify for the champions league.

I've always thought for years that the FA Cup should provide a place. If the winners have already qualified, give it to the EFL Cup winners.

They're champions of those competitions, after all.

(Of course, if the EFL Cup winners are already as there as well, for much merriment, give it to the EFL Trophy winners. That's Peterborough in the Champions League next season then)

It should be for each of the domestic champions across Europe or renamed. The problem is that the branding is connected to the name and I doubt they could come up with anything as impressive.

What does annoy me is the way it has eclipsed the other European competitions to the point they are considered worthless and has devalued our UEFA Cup success for many modern fans.

The European League
Euro League
The Super League
European Super League ah, probably not that

It's a brand now, it's a tougher competition than the old European Cup but easier to qualify for I guess

It's debatable whether the Europa or Conference League should still exist really

Sometimes i wish all the big European clubs had gone off and formed a super leagur... i mean for clubs like Arsenal there is almost no jeopardy in the Premier League, there is little chance of relegation ( even Man u having a terrible season and nowhere near it tbh)...... prehaps a league of equally strong clubs would focus their minds, despite our troubles this season i believe there was no club that had a happier summer than us such was the unexpected and hard fought joy of last seasons promotion! Big Clubs supporters will probably never experience that!

You realise that it's been the case not only the champions played in the Champions League for nearly three decades?

I mean, I don't disagree with the name thing, but it's weird to still be angry about it...

I think the OP is because the number of places is steadily creeping up.

First it was top 2, then top 3 followed by top 4.

Now 2 countries get 5 places in the CL.

And if Man Utd or Spurs win the Europa League, England will have 6 teams playing in the CL next season.

That does show the strength of our league now I guess

In the inaugural European Cup in 1955-56, 16 teams were invited to play. Of the eventual participants, only 7 were national champions e.g. Hibernian had finished only 5th in the previous season's Scottish League, but the SFA chose them instead of champions Aberdeen, partly because they were the only Scottish club with floodlights. Chelsea, English champions, were invited but were persuaded to withdraw by the ever-blinkered Football League.

The Football League showed great insight seeing where it was all heading and protecting their brand, didn't they?
