One of them apparently said 'It's just a tree', as if he expected the judge to agree and halt the proceedings there and then! Moron!

Pity the judge couldn’t order one hand each crushed in a vice ‘Casino’ style with the comment ‘it’s just one hand’. That’d certainly end their tree felling activity. Add in a large tattoo on each cheek and forehead in purple of a sycamore tree - it’s just a tattoo.

No need for luxuriating in prison paid for by me. I can even supply the vice. Job done.

I’m in a bad mood today.

Rehabilitation / reeducation I feel in this instance rather than a prison sentence, they need someone to off them an olive branch.

I mean, he’s right, isn’t he? It is just a tree.

Nice tree, mind.

But is that a consideration in law?

If it was just a tree then why did they pick that particular one to chop down?

So many wtf aspects of this story. From the mindlessness of the act, the indifference to the anger they have caused to the audacity of pleading not guilty despite overwhelming evidence of their guilt...

I am not sure what kind of sentences they will get. Criminal damage usually involves a fine and a bit of community service or something, But people can get jailed for it. I remember Charlie Gilmour (son of David Gilmour) getting jailed for swinging from the cenotaph at a protest.

EDIT: I just checked it, he was actually jailed for "violent disorder" - for swinging from a concrete structure.

David was quite anti-establishment about it at the time. He didnt hand back his CBE though. Anyway, I digress.

I agree.

The amount of public time and money they will have wasted, especially with it having been a jury trial, at a time when HMCTS is stretched to breaking point, will be ludicrous.

They need the judicial equivalent of an extra match ban for a frivolous appeal.

You ain't a beauty but, hey, you're alright.

Absolute dickheads. I'd like to see them get some sort of community order (alongside the likely custodial sentence they'll get) making them plant trees as unpaid work for the next 12 months.

So if there’s 3 billion trees in the UK, and we say that was #1…

At what point does a tree in that 3bn become worthy of this public spectacle?

Top 100? Top 1000?

And for any tree ranked below that, you get a mild slap on the wrist, if that.

(Deliberately flippant, as I think it’s an interesting debate.)
