We’ve won 4 in 36, 1 in 18 at home , can we drop the arrogance? 19:36 - May 10 with 2315 viewsCopfordBlue

The Championship is going to be tough. Our squad is a lot stronger than it was a year ago, financially the club are very well placed, the stadium has been upgraded and we’ve got an exceptional young manager. These are all massive points in our favour but despite them next season will be testing. Too many supporters are talking as if all we have to do is turn up and we’ll be promoted as champions with 100 points and 100 goals. It could happen , I’d love it to but I have my doubts.

A big overhaul in the squad this summer seems inevitable, despite Kieran saying he’ll be here, things can change and as we know very well, the championship is a hard league. We found league one challenging for 4 years, we didn’t even make the play offs for the first 3 before eventually getting promoted by the skin of our teeth.

This will be the 5th time I’ve seen us relegated (4 times from the top division, once from the Championship). Not once have we bounced straight back. The chances of us doing so next season are better than at any time in the past but it’s not guaranteed.

This isn’t intended as a negative post, just a reality check. My concern is that if a significant proportion of the fanbase think next season will be a walk in the park and we then get off to a bad start, the atmosphere will become quite toxic, quite early.

It’s going to be a long, hard season and it’s not going to be plain sailing. There will be plenty of upheaval over the summer. The players will have 3 weeks less off than the majority of teams in the league who are already on holiday. We’ve got a very good chance of bouncing back and I wouldn’t bet against us doing it but those of you expecting, maybe even demanding promotion would do well to remember where we were 3 years ago.

It should be. Sorry. Look at what Burnley did. Look what Sheffield United did. Leeds have picked up 90+ points two seasons on the bounce. If we do not achieve promotion next year considering our stability and financial advantage, considering the clear gap that exists in the Championship between the relegated clubs and the rest (something we've been bemoaning this season at a higher level) then it's been a season of underachievement.

It would be disappointing not to match the 96 points we got last season considering the strength of the squad compared to last season. If we're going to accept the reality of an abysmal points tally this season not being a disaster because of the context of where we've come from, then similarly we have to accept the context of next season whereby not being promoted will be a failure. We can't have it both ways. The fear is 96 points will only be enough for 3rd.

I agree but sometimes clubs underachieve just as sometimes they overachieve as we did last season. It happens but is only really an issue if players, owners, boards of directors, sponsors etc are fickle. Our club are in the best place we’ve been in for decades, it would be a huge shame if it unravelled if we don’t get off to a great start next season or if the season ends with us still in the championship.

As true as the above may be, the unfortunate reality is that performance in the Premier League is basically irrelevant when considering performance in the championship. We might not romp the division next year but something has to go wrong for us to not be in the picture.

I honestly don't get the point of posts like this.

Should I (and the "fanbase") only provide support based on where I/we think we should "realistically" expect to finish next year?

Town fan = Town fan, It's that simple.

Seems to be just as much fear mongering and 'reality checking' to be honest.

Don't think it's arrogance to look at the reality of how parachute clubs have got on in the Championship in recent history and set that as a marker for what sort of season we should be looking at. Appreciate the natural inclination as Town fans to assume the worst will happen but we'll go into next season with, on paper, a stronger squad than the one that finished 2nd with 96 points having won loads of games last season.

IMO the only thing that would put some doubt into us challenging at the top end next season would be if McKenna left in the summer, especially if it happened in the middle or near the end of pre-season.

Just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't understand.

While I tend to agree that a few of our fanbase seem to think that Town will walk the Champ, you do know that it's the players who will actually play?

The fans just get to watch?

We won't actually have any influence on whether we go up or not.

If we have this squad minus Delap, Cajuste and Omari but with decent replacements for them and have KM in charge all season then I think we’ll go up. I don’t think it’s fear mongering to say that we could lose 6 or 7 of our better players and potentially our manager. If that happens then it’s going to be tough.

So you don’t think the atmosphere inside a ground has any impact on what goes on on the pitch or that supporters influence decisions made by the board of a football club ?

The reality check being that we have parachute payments and a team of high end championship players. The reality check is that we will have a bigger squad than most other championship sides. The reality check being that we have a very good manager with sensible yet ambitious owners.

We won’t approach the championship like we did under Mick and Evans.

And why do we need to remember where we were three years ago? That is totally irrelevant.

We should be aiming for automatic promotion and we should be looking to exceed 96 plus points.

My thoughts exactly, , but there needs to be a difference between arrogance and confidence, I the the majority are reasonably confident about our chances next season and rightly so , then there’s the arrogance a very small minority is my guess, that seems to think we will walk it .

It actually wasn’t plain sailing for Leeds/Burnley either and they got 100 and nearly 100 points.

The financial impact of promotion to the PL makes our League 1 stint (almost) irrelevant by the time next season starts to be honest. I said almost, because the quickness of going through the leagues has meant big challenges, especially this season, but back at Championship level we will be favorites for a reason.

I don’t think a big overhaul is inevitable either, wasn’t that the point of a lot of the transfer strategy?

Expectations will be high and they should be.

We got to be one of the favs for next season, who else is seriously going to be challenging.

Leicester and Southampton will, obviously depends on if and what sort of points deduction Leicester may get. Although both have had a terrible time of it in the Premier league they both have the quality to do well in the Championship.

One of Sunderland/Sheff Utd certainly will, one of those will be going up so the other should be challenging again next season.

As for the rest probably:

Birmingham
Coventry
West Brom
Middlesbrough

Can't see any others unless their is a surprise package next season.

No club starts the summer with a better chance of promotion than us. We're also not going to be odds on to win a league with 24 teams in it. I'm feeling content and optimistic for the future.

Whilst we did narrowly get promoted from League One in 2023, I think describing it as "by the skin of our teeth" doesn't really do justice to how well we ultimately did.

That’s far from what the OP is saying.
In all fairness it’s a very balanced and realistic post.

Agree, the last third of the season we blew teams away, and the pleasure was blowing the team's that mattered, Barnsley, Peterborough ect

But we did have to be almost perfect, we couldn't really afford many dropped points. What was it, 8 clean sheets in a row?

I see the point, we looked like we'd let it slip around new year.

I 100% agree with you. Let’s not forget to factor in our squad are now used to losing, that has an impact on the mentality, so if we start slowly next season and find ourselves behind in games it might trigger those same thoughts that our squad is going through this season, it’s to be expected. Also, there are going to be changes in the personnel of our playing squad that takes time to gel. Our recruitment this season - let’s face it - has been poor, I just hope we do better during the summer to get us Championship ready. Finally, KM was untouchable during his first couple of seasons, he was used to tasting success, however this campaign has highlighted his flaws and limitations as a manager and that can also impact on someone’s self doubt. Those feelings won’t just go away at a drop of a hat or because we’ve been relegated.

I personally feel, there’s a lot of things that will impact on us next season, it won’t merely be a stroll in the park and those that think it will be are being rather naive. For all the Burnley and Leeds Utds, let’s not forget sides like Watford, Birmingham City, Bolton, WBA , Huddersfield Town, the Canaries etc…..that have yet to make a return to the EPL.

Agree,

Teams were likely surprised by us last season, this time around we're a scalp to be had.
We have no momentum, I think that part is very underestimated, I expect Brum and Wrexham both to have very good seasons.
Our team spirit is not the same.
We will likely have to bed in another 5 players to first XI

are the things that bother me.

On the plus side if we can keep most of our defence and forward line and find a way to play it should be a good season. That said I haven't really watched Luton but what the hell happened to them? They got more PL points than we did.

Realistically I'd say 16-18 teams can probably reach the top six if they perform as a club to their highest level. Naturally some will drop off but we need to be at it from match 1. Personally, I'd love another Wembley play off win this time around!
