Squad next year then.... 15:31 - May 15 with 1840 viewsitfcjoe

Current players under contract for next season

GK [4]
Muric, Palmer, SLicker, Walton

FB [4]
Johnson, Townsend, Davis, H.Clarke

CB [3]
O'Shea, Greaves, Woolfenden

CM [3]
Humphreys, Taylor, Morsy

FWs [8]
J.Clarke, Philogene, Hutchinson, Szmodics, Ogbene, Chaplin, Broadhead, Burns

ST [3]
Delap, Al-Hamadi, Hirst

Total [25]

Out of Contract [5]
No option - Burgess & Tuanzebe
With an option - Harness, Baggott and Luongo

Loanees [4]
Godfrey, Phillips, Cajuste and Enciso

So starting position for next season is 34 players to deal with.

Make following assumptions:
All 4 loanees to return to parent clubs
Luongo, Harness and Baggott to not be part of squad next season
[Released/option taken and sold/option taken and loaned]

Takes us to 27 players

Goalkeepers
Don't need 4 senior keepers, guess we'd hope to only have 2 of those 4 with an U21 keeper as 3rd choice - i.e. sell Walton or Muric and loan out Slicker. Sign Pierce Charles from Sheff Weds, or promote Henry Gray.

FBs
Try and keep Tuanzebe, if we can't prob leave as is unless Davis goes

CBs
Try and keep Burgess, if not buy to replace. Potentially O'Shea too

CM
Potentially sell Taylor, see if Humphreys can play a part, but big overhaul needed

FWs
Broadhead to go? Last year of deal and won't play much. And then 1 in-1 out of we lose and Omari or a Jaden

STs
Sell Delap, try to sell Ali, Sign 1-2 players

Think it ends up with us needing 8 signings, may end up more if we trade a couple here or there too

Busy yes, but organised busy.

I’ll be amazed if the club didn’t already know who was leaving or staying and who they have in mind to come to the club. With those targets already being asked if they will be prepared to come here or not.

I know there was rumours about Morsy and even though he's not getting any younger/he might be rotated, we have to keep him for the sake of continuity and leadership.

I still think Muric is in contention to be No1 next season.

Last time he had a season in the Championship he was named in the PFA Championship Team of The Year. He is more than capable at that level.

Agree really.

Would go something like

GK: Palmer, Walton, H.Gray (two successful loan spells now)
RB: H.Clarke, +1
CB: Woolfenden, O'Shea, Greaves, +1
LB: Davis, Townsend
CDM: Morsy, Taylor, +2
RM: Burns, Ogbene
CAM: Chaplin, Humphreys
LM: Szmodics, J.Clarke, J.Philogene
ST: Hirst, +2

Youth Prospects (Cup): S.Boniface, T.Mendel, T.Taylor

OUT:
Muric - <£5m?
Delap - £30m
Hutchinson - £20m-£30m
Broadhead - £4m-£5m
B.Johnson - £5m
A.Tuanzebe - Free
C.Burgess - Free
M.Harness - <£500k
E.Baggott - <£500k
Al-Hamadi - <£2m
M.Luongo - <£500k

Will be 10 out you would imagine, and few that you feel could possibly also depart if it suits all parties; J.Philogene, L.Davis, C.Walton, S.Morsy, G.Hirst - as you say will be 1 in 1 out then.

Could look something like £70m in which feels the right number within FFP after relegation and first season back.

Would need as a minimum:
RB
CB x2
CDM x2
ST x2

I wouldn't be surprised to see Woolfenden leave.

It's one thing to sit on the bench in the Premiership but different in the Championship especially when you know you are very capable of playing at that level.

Unless O'Shea moves on of course!

Isn't Omari's release clause £35m? There's no way we'd sell him for less than that.

Young, English, full of potential, ex-Chelsea.

Think Johnson goes for a lot more than £5m if he goes at all.

I’d be surprised if much goes on with transfers out until later in the window aside from Delap and potentially Axel and Burgess. For instance I don’t think anyone pays £35m for Omari until they’ve tried to get better value elsewhere and don’t think we’ll be willing to be low balled so there will be a bit of a blocker until people start getting twitchy.

I don't think anybody knows his release clause for certain - all figures are only guess work really.

I would imagine £30m is around the number - but nobody knows for sure.

I’m hoping we’ll only need 5/6 in and can focus on quality signings and loans

Out: Delap, Omari, Davis, Muric (European loan), Walton, Harness, Al-Hamadi, Luongo, Tuanzebe

In: Downes, Kone (3rd choice striker), LB, CM, 1st choice striker

I think our starting 11 will be:
Palmer
Johnson - O’Shea (C) - Greaves - New
New - Downes
Philogene - Szmodics - Clarke
New ST

Second 11:
Slicker
Clarke - Wolf - Burgess - Townsend
Morsy - Taylor
Burns - Chaplin - Broadhead
Hirst

Squad:
Young GK, Ogbene, Kone, Humphries (if not loaned)

Yup, as we had been discussing really. 10-12 out, 8-10 in.

In theory, yes, and I reckon KMc can get his head right over the summer, but there are a lot of angry and hard of thinking tools out there who get off on getting on certain players' backs out of habit, and I'm not sure how manageable that would be with Muric.

Think he could be great, but it's a risk. All about the psychology.

If there's one time to experiment with a back three (O'Shea - Woolf - Greaves) then it's when we've been relegated with a strong squad for the division below. Not saying I think it's necessarily a good idea, but I certainly wouldn't be against trying it with those three ball players. Could be quite adaptable and PL ready as a 3/5.

You could easily do that without changing formation too much, with O’Shea playing the Tuanzebe role.

I was thinking this too; it frees up Davis or Townsend from defensive responsibilities, in playing an attacking LWB role, mitigates against the likely loss of Tuanzebe, and also leaves Johnson, Ogbene or Burns to play an attacking right sided role, with less defensive expectations.
Our forwards would benefit from the avalanche of chances that would come their way.

Yes, as he has done well already, but his power and pace a bit narrower, allowing one of him, Woolf or Greaves to step into CM a bit (again, as he's done later in the season this year) would free us up to have one of two CMs carrying (like Cajuste) and injecting themselves into the front four. WE could be more balanced with the full backs, or still play the asymmetric way we have been doing. I think there's a lot of flexibility in that, and I think the manager and these players have shown great intelligence and adaptability already.

Once fully recovered and match fit, Ogbene will be way more than a squad player. He’ll terrify Championship teams - way ahead of many you have in the teams, including edging Burns for me.

Would be gutted to see Dara leave - think he has looked every bit a PL defender.

Think O’Shea & Greaves is the thought process for a long term pairing -of course if a big offer comes in from the PL, you need to take it.

RE Woolfy, still think he can be an important member of the group, and reliable option, think it’s always good to have people like him and H.Clarke in the group of possible - bring that level of homegrown passion that can’t really be bought.

Woolfy and O'Shea and Greaves and Palmer need to be our reliable defensive line. Tunzebe we should throw £8m at.
We need £20m of midfielders.
We need 2 new strikers when Delap goes.
With all that we should be a force!

£60m for Delap and one from Davis/Hutchinson/Broadhead I would accept.
