Europe still hates us on 09:32 - May 18 by Guthrum
It was a wrong strategic choice for the competition. Country massively popular in the US at the moment. Much less so in the Eurovision zone, which carries most weight in the public voting.
Every time I happened to hear a snatch of a few songs, they were so screechy & tuneless they earned an instant channel change.
It's not for nothing that simple, catchy, upbeat tunes like 'Puppet on a String' and 'Waterloo' have won in the past.
We’ve just watched the voting. Blimey, UK phone vote top marks to Israel. If this is all political as people say, what does that say about the UK public? Killing Muslims is either very popular OR we just like their song. Pick the bones out of that one!
It was a reasonably strong performance by Israel imo. So hopefully it’s the latter scenario!

There's no who don't we like option, Israel would rank very highly in that too
I'm staggered people are able to vote 20 times, that seems vulnerable to manipulation
Alcohol is the answer but I can't remember the question!

And each vote costs does it? Blimey. People should have more sense.
I’d imagine the whole thing is open to manipulation. There must be loads of lobbying going on on social media and all that jazz.
It’s weird how the producers have to dub out the boos for Israel inside the venue, yet they get a high public vote. All seems a bit weird to me, but then it’s a weird competition with a bit of a weird cult following.
Anyway, sun’s out and some weeds need pulling, so I’m out of here.
The best song won. And fck Israel, no wins for the war criminals.
Our song is not my kind of music but it's fun, poppy and for me was the best song on the night. Whether it should win or not is a matter of personal choice, but to have it get ZERO points from the public suggests more than a bad song is at play here. There were some absolute boring dirges that got more than the UK.
On a side note, there weren't enough 'mental' songs this year. I'm all about the bonkers ones.
Trust the process. Trust Phil.

As pure Eurovision, I thought Tommy Cash was the stand out with Espresso Macchiato.
And agree. The UK entry was a decent enough pop tune just not Eurovision enough.and Remember Monday put in a polished performance.
Ha I do like this takeaway! But I hold a measure of sympathy for our European sisters too because again we weren't an easy act to vote for. Big stride forward in not offering the worst vocals of the competition we normally elect to, they did themselves proud, but the song was a bit meh in a sea of lung-busters and Tommy Cappuccinos. Am I taking a risk in guessing it failed to make the UK top 40? When we provided a song our own public actually liked (novel strategy - Sam Ryder's space song) we would have won were it not for Ukraine.
Of the two female harmony groups I preferred the freaky Latvians. Biggest injustices were Spain and Germany. I'm glad Sweden didn't win because it wasn't that funny; not a patch on the Russian grannies or tin foil Ukrainian lady of years past. The Austrian chap sang his gonads off and deserved to win for that alone.

Given that so much of the audience voting is political, the fact that Ukraine didnt give us a single point when we're supposedly leading this coalition of the willing to try and preserve their country, doesn't make me feel that happy.
I don't know the numbers, but perhaps the enormous amount of suffering and death that has been brought on the poor Ukrainians means that the population at large is not as willing as we are being lead to believe to continue this awful way.
Like I say, I don't know enough Ukrainians, but I know a few, but as Eurovision voting has always had a strong political component to it, I can't see this year's one being any different.

Why can't they just put death and destruction to one side for a minute and be more grateful!

Israeli outlet Ynet confirms Eden Golan's televote advertising campaign was organised by the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Machine translated from Hebrew:
The support Golan received from the European audience was preceded by a campaign by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the government publicity bureau for Eurovision fans, in which the Israeli representative addressed them in French, Italian, Spanish, German, Czech, Latvian, Estonian, Albanian, Georgian and English - and asked them to vote for her. The campaign states that "in view of the wave of hatred and Muslim protests in Malmö, a counter-reaction of the silent majority is taking place. The Europeans do not like what they see."
The videos taken by Golan were uploaded to a dedicated YouTube channel and received more than 14 million views. The campaign appealed to audiences selected based on a careful analysis of the voting patterns of countries in the past and the interest those countries showed in the song "Hurricane". The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Advertising Bureau put emphasis on Eurovision-loving audiences such as the LGBT community in Europe, members of fan clubs, journalists covering the contest and opinion leaders in the field.

We got 466 points from the public just three years ago. The UK needs to stop whining about political voting and actually send something which will connect year after year. There's no reason we can't.

Subjectivity though isn’t it. In order to score any points in the televote you need enough people in any country to agree that it was at least one of the 10 best songs. In my own personal ranking I put it somewhere around 19th so the score seemed fair to me. As another poster has said we scored hundreds and hundreds of points from the televote a couple of years ago so it can be done with the right song, publicity and personality.

I'd be astonished if you could name 18 songs in the competition, let alone 18 better than ours. I think people like to knock Eurovision, and especially like to knock our entrants, and I think you're showing a bit of anti-bias because that song isn't your cup of tea. I'm trying to set subjectivity aside, even though it's not my type of music, and I believe pretty girls singing a catchy song would appeal to the general populace enough to get at least a point, regardless of what you or I think.
The proof is in the juries - experts in music/Eurovision - who awarded us a respectable 88 points. How do you explain that they gave us 88 and the general public gave us a big fat zero, without conceding something more is at play? It doesn't add up.
I'd say we did well a few years ago despite the political voting, but it still happens, every year, and has been going on for decades. To dismiss that it's a thing is very naiive.
Trust the process. Trust Phil.

I think that by and large our choice of entry for Eurovision tends to hark back to the type of song that would have won 20 or more years ago.

Are you saying that normal Ukrainians are unhappy that we are supporting them to resist invasion and occupation by Russia?
I have to say, I know many and that could not be further from the truth for them.
You say you know a few, is that what they're telling you?

Indeed, if they were unhappy at resisting Russian aggression, I imagine what Ukrainians would do is express their displeasure via Eurovision voting, rather than protesting or refusing to fight…
