Things that are good about living in the UK 15:45 - May 21 with 2226 views | ThisIsMyUsername | Everything seems to be rather doom and gloom at the moment. I am trying myself to become more mindful about all of the good that the UK has to offer, and to recognise how lucky one is to live here. Of course it isn't perfect, but nowhere is. Let's make a list of the good things about living in the UK. I'll make a start: - Healthcare which is free at the point of access. - Access to plentiful and immediate food and water. - No extreme weather. - Varied scenery and landscapes. Please add your own.

Things that are good about living in the UK on 16:37 - May 21 with 1313 views | bsw72 | Most things are pretty good about the UK, it's the media catastrophising everything. Off the top of my head below are positives, but not perfect obviously - and personal experience / geographical location will impact perception. Education system, welfare system, low unemployment, Freedom of travel / speech, appropriate gun control, reasonably stable weather, varied countryside/beaches, varied top class sports teams, stable utility provision etc etc There are so many positives in the UK which are overlooked, it's a long way from utopia, and there are without doubt countries which have different pluses and minuses, but I love the UK. Its very edgy to knock the UK, and as you say there's a lot we don't get right and a lot of people here who have pretty narrow minded views for my liking, but you're right on balance its a good place to live with a high degree of equality of opportunity (relatively speaking). I'm fortunate to have travelled a lot and lived in other countries in Europe and beyond in my 20's, but I'm yet to live in 1 I want to call home more than Britain. Obviously the fact I'm from here plays a big part, I dare say if I were an alien visiting Earth for the 1st time it might not be the one I chose if I was doing so without any bias, but it offers a huge amount and there's a heck of a lot of worse places to be. I think sometimes there's a tendency to assume other countries get loads more right than we do and have streets paved with gold and impeccable living standards, but the reality is often very very far from that even in the countries you would think of as 'top tier'.

Always relevant to personal circumstances but having left over 10 years ago: The thing I miss: - Good Indian food (which is odd because there is tones of Indian's in the US maybe just not older generations) - Safe Public transit after 10pm - Mid range supermarkets that are still decent - Real pint glasses - Sausage Rolls Things I don't miss: - Everyone moaning - The wages - Last orders - The service - The weather - Liv St to Ips line [Post edited 21 May 17:13]

If we were still in the EU my wife and I would probably move to the Mediterranean somewhere in a few years. Might still do, just be more of a pain.

I’m with you on that. I could easily settle in France or some of the Mediterranean islands, although it’d be a slow burn getting up to speed with the language. I loved living in Maine too, but very different experience. I loved the proper seasons there - baking hot summers and freezing cold winters with loads of snow. I was in my element grabbing a morning’s skiing while the kids were in school and the slopes quiet.
