Where to start...

Fee to Man City was £15m + add-ons up to £5m + 20% sell-on
Deal with Chelsea is £30m + unknown sell-on

So far, we know we've received £20m from Chelsea - that covers our initial £15m to Man City (even if we paid that all upfront, which is unlikely) and the £3m in add-ons (we didn't trigger the full £5m)

Leaves £2m profit, of which we have to give £400k to Man City, and the remaining amount would cover Delap's wages for the season if we were paying him up to £30k a week.

But at later dates we'll be receiving £10m more from Chelsea (of which, Man City will get £2m) plus a % if they sell him on for a profit, so in what way could we ever be in a negative on this deal? Glad you're not my accountant...

I know all transfers are completed in this manner these days, that's why it seems odd to actually make a point of saying we only received £20m. Why not just say the deal was completed for £30m as would normally be the case?

Getting two-thirds of the money up front is, from what I can gather, quite generous as an opening installment. So this £20m may be a positive for us from the deal.

But you've based your argument on Chelsea only paying the first installment of £20m but assumed Ipswich have paid the entire fee and adds to City. It's just as possible Ashton agreed the Delap fee to City is paid in installments irrelevant if we sell him. So it's possible we've only paid £10m so far for him, thus £10m already.

The fee to Man C was £25m paid up front. Wages for the year £5m. Man C are entitled to 20% on the whole Chelsea fee - £6m payable up front and Chelsea are paying what they owe us over the life of the contract. So we will lose only £6m over the six years. It could be worse.

What were the options? If we'd had said £60m release clause then he wouldn't have joined.

I would assume the add ons were not triggered (one being we stayed up and the other Delap receiving a call up to England squad).

Once we cater for the Man City share of the sale we are still looking at a decent profit and then the fee is undisclosed as it will have a number of add ons in there.

Again - Delap getting full England call up, possible sell on fee, possible champions league add on
