Wouldn’t be surprised to see him go and would be a big shame.

Surely he wants to settle down at a club at some point, may as well stay here.

Personally, I don't think any team should be relying on O'Shea to keep them in the Prem. That's three relegations now, and that's not remotely on him alone, but I don't think he's head and shoulders above his teammates and being let down by those around him. He's had his fair share of errors this season and while he has plenty of good attributes, he's never filled me with great confidence.

Have to admit I disagree, I think he's been comfortably our best CB. Physical, good in the air positioning, good talker, quick enough. Not as calm on the ball as Woolfy, but I think he's in his own league in terms of calm.

No one should rely on one defender but for me he's as good as we could expect to get/have as a newly promoted club.

To be fair to him, he was playing for clubs that were up against it from the outset, and he was voted one of the best players across the board.

He is just unfortunate that he's played for teams who are not equipped to deal with the PL.

Put him in at somewhere like Fulham/Brentford etc he would be a real asset.

Exactly.

£1.2m is a strangely small release fee, if it is indeed only Prem clubs that can trigger it.

Swithering about 1.2 or 1.25 million is totally missing the point. The release clause is negotiated to guarantee release in certain circumstances. The key part of any transfer is then the negotiation of wages and that simply involves the player and the buying club.
Once the release clause is met the player chooses where he goes. The club prepared to pay the most simply pays the standard release fee with the rest paid by way of wages.

Think his positioning is quite a big weakness, personally. He's got some great physical attributes and I think that's why Prem sides are interested, but I don't think he's necessarily a Prem defender as things stand.

Possibly, although there's a reason none of those more established sides have taken him yet and his main options have been (and may again be) newly promoted teams. I don't think he's good enough on the ball for many of the more established middling Prem sides.

Yep, positioning is his major blind spot. He gets out of his faux pas a lot due to his recovery speed, but some of the positioning errors are elementary lapses in concentration. He's got elite attributes for winning first contacts, of that there's no doubt.

Indeed, but the issue is that his positioning sometimes then pulls others out of position and they don't necessarily have the pace to recover in the way that he does. He's got some great attributes, but does he make us better as a team or as a defensive unit? I'm on the fence.

Yep, he's quick and a beast in the air, but his distribution is bang average (it really is) and his positional awareness isn't good.

If we can sell O'Shea for £20m and buy Japhet Tanganga for comparable peanuts from Millwall I'd do it. On the proviso we kept Leif and Omari too, of course.

My worry about this is a leadership issue. Morsy is on reduced time this year/moving on and if we sell O'Shea for Tanganga we're losing a lot of leadership.

Speaking to someone yesterday who is has it on very good authority that O’Shea has zero desire to play in the championship, and will be off the first chance he gets.
No reason to disbelieve that info either.

If he doesn't want to play in the Championship then he needs to start playing better when he's playing in the Prem.

FWIW I don’t believe this to be true. Believe he’s perfectly happy here but that his agent is pushing for a move.

Seems we’ve both been told very different things. Either way, our best CB by a mile so fingers crossed he stays

I'm with Herbivore on this one. Good player but didn't see anything from him which made me think he was that much of an upgrade on Woolfenden or Burgess (albeit the latter plays on the other side). As pointed out, where he benefits from pace and agility he loses with simple errors and struggles to read the games which can put his team mates in trouble. The only concern would be his departure means more churn in defence, particularly if Tuanzebe and Burgess leave too.

I think some people must wear blue tinted specs. He’s different class to Woolfy - hence there’ll be a load of people interested in him from the PL

He's a very different player to Woolfy. You can't really compare them.

O'Shea is your traditional 'stopper' and Woolfy is your traditional 'sweeper/ball-playing centre half' to use Football Manager phrases.

I've maintained throughout the season that Woolfy and O'Shea would complement each other well. O'Shea and Greaves just don't work together as a pair. They want to do the same things.

I think I'm likely in the minority on this one, but if someone offered us money that meant a decent little profit (say a bid of close to £20m) I'd probably take it. He did fine for a lot of the season but he also made quite a few errors at times (not always punished) and he's not good enough on the ball for the way we like to play. Personally, I don't think he's a huge upgrade on Woolf all things considered and I think we could reinvest the money elsewhere without being significantly weakened by his departure.

I'm with you on this. Prefer Greaves of the two. Likewise re Wolfie.

If O'Shea goes then I imagine we will spend a fair chunk of change on a replacement. You have to feel for Woolfy really as I don't think he has ever put a foot wrong and him/Greaves would make a good partnership I think.

Tend to agree, both Greaves and O'Shea tend to want to attack the ball, which is fine, but one needs to think about the other a bit more.

Wonder if Tuanzebe will get the centre back role if we keep him and O'Shea leaves?

Woolfenden did very little wrong when given a chance. He wasn't given much of one - probably because of O'Shea's pace and agility when it came to challenging for headers. But he has issues as well and, if Woolfenden had made the errors O'Shea did through the season, certain posters would be all over him.

O'Shea is an upgraded but "different class" is an exaggeration, and perhaps one which indicates specs are being worn there as well.

I think the problem a lot of the new players have is that they've only been seen in the PL. All the "old boys" have built up a load of credit playing against dross in L1 and then exceeding expectations in the Championship. All the new boys have only been here whilst we've been beaten every week. Personally think it's led to distorted views on player quality

I can see your point but, even trying to watch with an unbraided eye, did I think Woolfenden and Burgess looked out of their depth in the Premier League? No. Whoever played in centre defence, in general, did a decent job, albeit Greaves struggled when he returned from injury. Midfield was the issue. As said, whilst I agree O'Shea was and is an upgrade, from last season's performances I wouldn't say the difference is massive. Different strengths, different weaknesses.

Others have also mentioned something I believe as well. O'Shea and Burgess worked together as a pairing. Woolfenden and Greaves worked together as a pairing. O'Shea and Greaves did not. Tactically I also wish we had stuck to a back three for longer than we did, though I suppose a lack of options at RWB hurt us there.
