Axel Tuanzebe - Trabzonspor… 07:20 - Jun 16 with 3198 viewsKieran_Knows

… can’t seem to find the original link, and Turkish ‘sources’ generally are a bit hit and miss, but apparently the Trabzonspor manager has said they’re looking to sign Tuanzebe.

This would be bad news if true. If we lose both Tuanzebe and Burgess, and with O'Shea and Davis plausible transfer targets, we could be looking at a major defensive rebuild alongside the midfield one.

Hope he stays.

Whilst that initially leaves me panicking, in that worst case scenario the back four could still be
Townsend
Greaves
Woolf
Johnson/ Clarke.

Which is far from shabby in the championship, and with reinforcements to come.

It’s pretty clear that he won’t be playing here next season sadly.

It’s going to be a big summer recruitment wise and a big test for that team

I take the point but in that situation there would still be three able back ups to find with v few games to keep them sharp, test them, improve them in a season when we have to rebuild connections, confidence, and champions mentality fast.

As much as I like them individually, you could make the argument that, based on last season, a defensive rebuild wouldn't be the end of the world

Good player but how many starts did he make last season?

I think we need more consistency....

This would be a strange move. They finished 7th, is that enough for Europe in Turkey? You have the big 3 sides who are well followed, but Trabzonspor only averaged 18,350 - Only 7 teams in the league averaged over 10k. 6 Teams averaged under 5k. It is a farmers league. Unless you are joining Fenerbache, Besitkas or Galatasary it is a major step down, even from the Championship.

There's a lot of money to be made in Turkish football, so they will certainly be able provide him with a Premier League competitive contract; but there is a fair old history of former English based player looking to get out of those contracts pretty quickly, once they are there. IF he goes, I predict he'll be back in England, or one of the other major European leagues, by the startbof the 26/27 season.
So don't do it Axel.

Can't see Axel staying. Always felt he was someone passing through and we were the temporary home whilst he got his career back on track. Class act, but I think if he wanted to be here he'd have signed a new contract by now. Different to Burge who needed to get away to get starts.

Yes, we were always a means to an end. Fair enough, if his career hadn't been in the place it was when he joined us, we wouldn't have been able to afford him.

And to be honest, I'd rather have someone with 80% of his ability/effectiveness who is actually available to play 95% of the time over someone who is a good defender but only available for roughly 57% of games.

Edited to include accurate assessment of how many league games Tuanzebe played last season.

Similarly though, he hasn't signed somewhere else yet and we haven't announced he's leaving.

Not clear at all as it stands given nothing is confirmed or announced.

A risk yes, but far from clear.

Edit - also given Axel's injury record and careless knife handling, a move could turn out to be a blessing in disguise!

Again though, the worry lessened by then having around £30 million in fees from the sales and a chunk of wages off the books, to be used for players who, by your own admission wouldn't necessarily need to slot in instantly as first team starters.

Not aiming this at you directly necessarily, more at reassuring myself that it's really a pretty rosy picture, and that worst case after a season in the prem is a lot lot better than worst case after a season in league one, or even the championship.

I'm going to say it........

He isn't as good/vital as people make out. Would he be good in the Championship, of course.

Is it the end of the world if he leaves? No. Johnson might even look good in the championship.

Time for a spot of Tuanzebe Bingo.
If Burge has gone to Swansea, my guess is Tuanzebe goes to Derby.

Actually, he is bloody good. He makes defending against most premier league left wingers look pretty easy most of the time, which is a testament to his ability, his intelligence and his timing.

I'm desperately hoping we keep him. One of our top three or four players, imho.

Tuanzebe is an outstanding player, easily Premier League level. Johnson, Clarke and Godfrey got torn apart playing as attacking right backs against Premier League wingers and they are all very good players, but it’s a very difficult role in our system. Tuanzebe never loses his man, and played the role perfectly. His only limitation is going forward but that’s why I would want Harry Clarke on the bench in case we are chasing a game.

They'd all laugh at me if they knew what I was trying to do. To create a new strain of super-wine in half-an-hour with a fraction of nature's resources and a FOOL for an assistant. 'Bernard Black, he's mad,' they'd say, 'he's insane, he's dangerous.' Well I'll show them! I'll show them all!

Time to move on.

Contract has been on the table long enough and you’d like to think that giving commitment to a club that he didn’t play for for ages due to a, ahem, ‘freak’ knife accident would account for something but no.

And like Burgess, this is a chance for him to take a massive signing on fee for himself as contract expired. Only one person to blame for that happening.

He might be, but he could manage to play in only 57% of league games last season.

Different class at Championship level at right back and probably centre half. But not if sat in the stand for practically half a season.

He will rightly expect to be earning decent money. Could we get someone else who might not be quite at his level but will at least be available for selection more frequently?

Nooooo - I really hope this, or any other rumour about him signing elsewhere, is wrong. He's one of our best.

I think this is fair comment, thinking about it now the dust of last season has settled.

Tuanzebe is a Premier League quality player. That stands out a mile. But again he is injury prone so personally, I’m easy on it. If he wants to stay, great. If he is looking at pastures new or a better contract at Trabzonspor or Foreignparts United, I wish him well.

I’d like to keep him please. There’s been a lot of talk about Burgess, but Tuanzebe is another level altogether. Agree with fitness concerns, but we only got him in the first place because of injury issues.
