Best and Worst loan sides? 18:12 - Jun 19 with 2888 viewsBlueandTruesince82

Promoted by the Tayo Edun thread and a few others around the worst loan players I thought perhaps a best and worst loan 11 might while away some mins.

Best Pollit, brief but decent
Gio
Sixto
Daryl Murphy
Tom Lawrence
Bullard
Andrews.... might be controversial but I thought he did well for us

That's a mid field and front line there, defenders..... struggling more.

Worst
Fish, obvs
Harrop
The other lad we got that year from Wolves
Walters, such hope but comming back is rarely the one
Possibly same applies to Ambrose

Keanan Bennetts

Shudder.

A contender for worst player in a Town shirt since Fish. And I'm not comparing Bennetts to the younger Fish when he was decent, obviously.

Bennetts looked like he could play football until he had to pass or shoot. Or dribble past an opponent.

Bennett out of Commando would probably have been more effective. Especialy wearing that ridiculous chainmail vest.

I always say that Bennetts had the body of a footballer, but not the footballing brain to go with it.

The Lambert loans were something else.

Ok, he might not have been as bad as the man who put the cart into carthorse Conor Sammon, but a (dis)honourable mention for Marlon Harewood. For the worst miss I’ve ever seen. I don’t know to this day how he managed it. Not a likeable player either. Useless for us.

Tony Dinning. Dear oh dear. Has to be a shoe in for anyone’s worst loanee 11.

Best loanee? Probably Daryl Murphy. Not the best footballer ever, but by no means the worst - big, powerful, knew where the goal was, committed both before he was signed permanently and after.

Stark contrast to Chris Wood who looked like he was taking a paid ‘gap year’ between Leicester and Leeds. He ate his way here, was paid by us to carry on eating because he clearly wasn’t too bothered about playing, before tearing it up at Elland Rd.

Maybe he was trying to get to the top of the heap for the largest shorts competition. Ebanks-Blake, Bullard and Nathan Ellington faced stiff opposition from him on that score.

Walters? Wash your mouth out.

DJ Campbell was excellent on loan.

Hard to know how to judge different eras but Jimmy Juan, Alan Mahon, Francis Jeffers all honourable mentions. If we need another striker we can go with Jon Stead based on the technicality that it started as a loan.

DJ Campbell is a great shout, I would go as far to say that his goals saved us from relegation that season.

I remember Tyreek Bakinson and Dominic Thompson being really average as early McKenna signings. Not the worst just average, so glad they didn't get signed permanently going into the League One promotion season.

Karbassiyoon is the one I always think of in the 04-05 season. Conceding the late goal against Reading arguably cost us promotion that season.

The three brought in when Lambert was trying to save his job. Harrop, Thomas and Matheson all hopeless.

Remember being happy we signed Gianni Zuiverloon as he had a decent background but he was pretty shocking as well. Think he played against Norwich when Holt scored a hattrick and that was it.

We really have had some shockers

That January 2021 transfer window was peak banter era. Thankfully the last one under the Evans ownership.

Best loanees of the last 20 years.

Brandon Williams (slim pickings here but great when he actually played)

There's a lot of sh!te players, like Harrop, being mentioned ... but did they cost us much or let us down? They were relatively cheap loans and, I think, pretty low bar on expectation levels.

You could make a case for Kalvin Phillips being our worst loan. Expensive, high expectations and being brought in to play a central role in a critical position. For me... absolute let down, even though he had a few bright moments... and was a good egg, by all accounts. High bar, but never got near to it.

I don’t remember too many bright moments tbh. In fact I need to be reminded of any. Played ok v Leicester until he was (unluckily) sent off, but that’s about it. Maybe it was misplaced hope on my part because I thought he was precisely the kind of player we needed.

He was pretty much dreadful even when he did play. Always half a yard and half a touch off it. Great bloke I’m sure and I’ve no doubt he wanted to recapture some of that Leeds/England form but he was a mile off it and a huge disappointment. For his sake I hope he recaptures what made him such a top player but for the top level he looks washed up to me.

So given the cost of him and that it left our midfield abject, I have to agree with you in that there’s a case to be made for him being our worst ever loan.

One loan player I really liked was Jonny Williams. He was a proper footballer and scored a stunning goal against I think Derby. Shame he was so fragile people were afraid to sneeze in case he fell to bits.

I felt a bit sorry for Matheson, he played one or two games and looked quite promising then hardly featured again for no real reason, perhaps Lambert thought he was too young? his loan spell was really strange.
