Have to say, id be amazed if this is one we get done. Boro wont want to sell to a club in the same division, but who knows.
As a player, he is maybe the best in possession player in the division. His passing, all areas of it is top level stuff, premier league quality.
Very lightweight though. Gets brushed off the ball easily from the times I have watched him. Clearly one McKenna wants and fits the young, English, high ceiling type.
EDIT- Checked the numbers and he wins a lot of duels and tackles apparently. Good numbers in that area. This is why I am not a scout.
I think as always in these situations I go back to, why would the club spend time making these sort of offers if the player isn't keen? We must surely - more than likely via an agent - had an indication that he's willing to talk to us should an offer be accepted?
There were rumours of a bid back in early June by a well known ITK’er on Twitter.
This news Phil is reporting seems positive because surely we have an inkling from the player he would be happy to come if we’re now making an official approach.

In the current climate, I'm not sure Phil would be reporting it unless Ashton and co. were happy for it to be in the public domain either...
Also, being part of a squad with fellow England U21s Omari and Philogene, plus fellow northerners like Greaves and J. Clarke might be a pull.

Fair point.
Would be a major coup if so, feel like Spurs had some serious links with him not so long ago. Was generally accepted that he would be off to the prem.

If the player wants it, it rarely doesn’t occur and I doubt Hackney would want to be at Boro for too much longer as he will want the premier league.
I would have thought a prem team will take him before we get a chance, but hopefully not.
Not sure there are any PL teams where he goes and starts many games? Got a very good chance of doing that here in 13 months time if he cements his place in our side.

Wonder what sort of approach of a midfield were after.. Assumed we would get some bruisers in the middle of the park after ashtons comments, but Azor & Hackney arent exactly the physical type (height wise). Neither Ruiz.

Same agent as Clarke too if that is relevant at all.
Very good spot. Ian Harte will definitely be on Ashton's speed dial. Let's hope Clarke's indifferent season in the PL hasn't burnt any bridges.
Would suggest Hackney and Clarke are good pals if they're with the same agent. Can only be good for Clarke's morale.
I've read that Hackney has been linked to several PL clubs and some in Europe too. Similar links that J. Clarke had this time 12 months ago, really. You have to wonder whether a lot of it is Ian Harte trying to tout these lads above the level they're ready for.

Since reporting has changed over the years. Have we had a twtd understands that didn't lead to a signing?

Yes, 'interest' , 'on the radar of' and concrete offers are very different things.
I also keep reading that Middlesbro won't sell to a championship club but for our interest to be real you would think that is not the case or we are wasting our time.

There is definitely a big difference between having an interest in a player and being willing to pull the trigger on a £15m deal for them. I might be doing him a disservice but I doubt Hackney is a key target for Spurs. Interestingly, Clarke went to Spurs and it set his career back as he barely played. So a word of warning there even if they did want him.
There is a lot to be said for establishing yourself in a side that will be promotion favourites and is managed by the best manager and player developer in the country outside the PL.

I think it's safe to say that if this deal is genuinely a goer, Carrick will have had a positive word in Hackney's ear re. McKenna.
My word, though. If we start the season with Matusiwa and Hackney as our double pivot, there is a definite argument that we start the 2025/26 season stronger in midfield than 2024/25.
It does fit with the narrative that I'd been told re. recruitment i.e. continuing to build/grow and be a stronger squad than last season.

Play kick and rush football with Rob Edwards for a year and further distance yourself away from a big move, or come and work with the best young manager outside of the Prem and either get yourself a move to the Prem with us, or move for big money next summer?

i don't know about it being stronger than last years pairings on paper.
Phillips recent international midfielder, Cajuste International squad member of course Morsy, who you would expect these 2 to have different attributes to him.
V's 2 lads, one of which has played in the Championship and and another in the top French league.
