Is it possible Morsy departure hasn't been announced yet because we won't let him go until new signings are in the door? Or do you think it's done - no way back so to speak?

Don't know, to be honest. I know we're very keen. Expected Premier League interest hadn't emerged as of a couple of days ago, so possible. I'd say that rather than probable, I think.

Definitely shades of the Jack Clarke issue last summer. Agents unable to drum up firm PL interest.

From people I've spoken to, Hackney's lack of physicality seems to count against him in the eyes of most PL clubs - even though his defensive stats (duels etc) were rock-solid last season.

If you're not 6ft 2"+ most PL clubs won't even consider you for central midfield these days.

I think it's more awareness than actual duels etc he struggles with - letting runners go, losing track of position etc

Same agent as Jack Clarke so following the same pattern - but JC did get a PL move, for less money that Sunderland wanted

If that's the case, he doesn't really sound like the ideal Luongo replacement?

Positional awareness is paramount in that role to cover Leif.

He's a ball progressor - 99th percentile for progressive passing and progressive carries

Where does that leave Ruiz, if we're still targeting him? And Matusiwa?

How do all three fit into the side? Unless we're going to a three-man midfield?

From what I've seen of Matusiwa, he looks like he can really get about the pitch and is far more mobile than Morsy. And looks defensively switched on too. Perhaps we see him doing some of the jobs of both Morsy/Luongo at this level and we can afford to have a more progressive player like Hackney alongside?

Matusiwa as the 6, Ruiz and Hackney battling it out to play alongside him

That's probably the ideal 3 to come in in my opinion. Hackney has the league experience and might be expected to be starting more league games in the early part of the season while Ruiz adapts to the league/playing style/country etc but starts in the cup games, etc.

Is Hackney going to leave Boro to have a 50/50 shot at starting Champ games? Will Ruiz pick us over Nice or Monchengladbach if he's not a guaranteed starter?

Just playing devil's advocate.

I'd love all three in our ranks, but all would be deserving of starts at Champ level, surely?

Yeah, I'd imagine it's one or the other with Hackney and Ruiz. It would be some sell by the club to land both!

Got to wonder how well set Ruiz is for playing a 46 game season though considering he's not had a break since December. I wonder if that might put the likes of Nice and Monchengladbach off at this stage too.

Yep and he is miles ahead of anyone at this level in these areas. The ease in which he takes the ball off defenders, turns and creates an attack is seriously high level stuff.

Would be amazing if he came, I just cannot see it happening.

Oh, I don't doubt we could facilitate this financially. I would expect both players would be likely to consider becoming a squad player in the PL, but I have my doubts 2 players of this stature would be happy being benched for a Championship team.

I don't think it's that tricky a sell necessarily. You say to both they're amazing players who are going to smash it and make the spot their own, that there are 50 plus games a season, that they'll be on a shed load of cash with a guaranteed release clause to the the prem at the end of season, or promotion with us. Play as well as everyone knows you can and either way at the end of this season you'll be in the prem and more established, worse case earn a million or two playing half the games and toddle off next year or just stay and take the money.

Plus Ed Sheeran will have a word too!!
