Time for Clarke & Philogene to prove their worth! 14:57 - Jul 18 with 1850 viewsBellevue_Blue

Omari leaving is obviously disappointing but my overall feeling is that him leaving is undoubtedly the best thing for the club going forward.

Not only will it mean that both Clarke and Philogene start but it will also give us a decent kitty to go and do the same thing again and again and again like Brighton/ Brentford etc

Hackney & Fellows to be the next two?

Think Hackney and fellows are destined for PL you mean we can now ponch top teams youngster and sell for big money

I’m not at all convinced with Clarke or Philogene. I don’t think Clarke even wants to be here. Can even see him going before the window shuts.

It does not really matter if we as a fan base are convinced or not. They cost the club 40M+.

If we are going to be successful they have to start and they have to dominate games this year.

Based on what?

Both were excellent at this level last time and Clarke hasn't shown signs he wants to leave that I've noticed.

That was two seasons ago. Philogene looks bored with the whole situation whenever I’ve seen him. He has an awful lot of convincing me and others that he is the real deal.
Clarke really wants to be back up north and basically told the whole of Sunderland to come and get him at Wembley.

I am very curious to see how Philogene looks next season, he obviously has had success at this level before. The fact Villa went in for him and then cut bait quite quickly doesn't concern me just a little bit. I know financially they didn't lose out and I guess they were just in a different place as CL club but with his age if he had a super high ceiling, I thought they might be keeping him around after purchasing him back.

Cannot see Philogene standing out for us, another one who is just in it for the money

Even if he's only in it for the money then he has to perform. He's on a good deal now but he's far from set up for life and will need to win a new deal/get a move elsewhere a couple of years into this contract.

Also, while I'm sure the money is nice I don't think there are many players who don't want to get better/score goals/do well etc.

He told loads of Sunderland fans at Wembley that he wanted to be back playing with them. People even posted about it on here at the time.

Different positions, but understand your point.

Both bought in as big money signings, and both struggled at PL level.

Have succeeded in the Championship, but not for us - need to adapt to our way of playing, and that inside left role is a really unique one, Nathan Broadhead does it better than anyone currently, Szmodics secondly, so they are down the pecking order at the moment.

Whether the way we play suits their styles, remains to be seen.

I wouldn't read too much into the Villa situation; they clearly re-signed him just to manipulate PSR. They saw how desperate we were to sign him, they obviously saw that he was more than keen to join. They probably had also noticed that we don't usually give up, and more often revisit going in for players.

I get the feeling that Villa were also getting done by Hull on his valuation in the combined deal that was set up for him and Greaves. The transfer meant they got one back over Hull, and made the profit for themselves instead of getting a measly profit from the deal between Hull and ITFC. They also had the bonus of running their eye over him after a fairly successful season as a first teamer to see if he was ready for their team.

The whole saga was a sham.

I didn't really know the in's and out's of the deal with Hull to be honest, that's interesting.

If just one of Clarke or Philogene match their numbers for the last time they were in the Championship, we’ll already better place than we were in our promotion season. And then throw that season’s top scorer. We’ve pretty much got 3 Hutch equivalents and that’s before we think about any more additions.

We are ridiculously stacked for this level. Most top clubs have one or two danger men. We’ve got at least 3. I’m not sure what people are expecting sometimes.

Clarke imo was one of the most improved players as the season went on last year.

He played a different role to his Sunderland days at the highest level.

Philogene. I feel for the lad. Done well at hull. Went back to villa. Played rw. Lw. 10. Comes to town without an identity imo in a new system with new players at the highest level.

Think both will have great seasons this year personally.

a niche perspective

Hasn’t Philogene been injured pretty much all the time he has been with us ? He will be a big player for us if fully fit for new season.

Good grief all this talk of Philogene and Clarke not being good enough is crazy, they're superb Championship players with high upsides if they continue to improve.

Both definitely need to show us what they’re capable of next season. A difficult season for both, especially Clarke who once seemed to start finding some sort of form was dumped out of the games because of daft red cards by others.

I think people sometimes forget just how ridiculous a step up the premier league is. A lot of our players were trying to adapt to that very quickly, against top level opposition and it’s brutal.

Very small sample size admittedly but we rocked up to playoff Coventry in February with a front 4 of Philogene, Clarke, Szmodics & Hirst and put 4 past them, with all the goals coming from that front 4.

It’s going to be far from a cake walk this season and not every game will go how that did, but the levels are very different, and we’ve certainly got players who are demonstrably very dangerous at this one.

Both will totally rip it apart this season

As Frimmers has said earlier there were hints of Clarke finding his feet toward the end of last season and as for Philogene he’s gonna be chomping at the bit. His time here so far hasn’t been the best for many reasons. Watch this space.

Agree with you Frimmers

Clarke took a while to get going but still managed to pick up 4 assists in the prem which is more than Hutch in fewer mins on the pitch. He's superb at this level

Philogene had a pretty rough time of things but came in when our form was starting to nosedive and then got unlucky with injuries. Very much looking forward to seeing what he can really do in a town shirt
