Davis 10:48 - Jul 26 with 2103 views | mutters | I have seen a couple of comments about how Leif did well in his new role. I didn't see the game, so what is this new role he finds himself in? It looked like he lined up in his normal space?

Davis on 10:54 - Jul 26 with 2002 views | Freddies_Ears | With Philogene and Clarke playing very wide, Davis was driving forward through the inside-left channel. He did the same in the Linz game too. Works well when we attack. Defending, the 2 x wingers need to protect the DCMs a bit better.

Were we playing a left footer on the left, and a right footer on the right?

Im guessing this is an area where Ashley Young can help.

Imagine his role will be quite flexible depending on who is in front of him. Clarke and Philogene both excellent out wide and part of why Clarke struggled last year was because him and Davis kept tripping over each other. Moving Davis inside looked to have work well with Philogene yesterday. I imagine if/when Broadhead or Szmodics play there this season we’ll see Davis revert back to the more traditional overlapping role. All greats options to have.

Great to see we are trying all sorts of unusual combinations.... i mean if we ( fans)havent a clue whsts going on then its going to be difficult for opposition
Davis on 12:00 - Jul 26 with 1429 views | gosblue | We've got plenty of options for different set ups. Back four, back three, back five. Another holding midfielder would be nice to give us options. We definitely need another number 9. Johnson's best game was in the win v Spurs (I think) where he played between Axel and Burns in a hybrid role with Axel managing him up and down the line. Young could bring us that leadership.

This analysis will upset some on here that thinks Davis must be really wide to be effective. I have always said Davis' biggest asset is his fitness and you need to involve him more. Sounds like KM concurs and has found a way to do that. So a big wink and a smile to those who criticised my theory and there you have it. 😉 | | | | Login to get fewer ads

There's massive difference between him making more inside runs from left back rather than staying very wide and converting him into a CM. We experimented with this last preseason as well to give us a different attacking shape.

He been one of our biggest threats for the last 2 years. It didn’t seem to have any adverse effects last night, but we’ll have much harder games than that.

Yep, For sure. In general, players need space to operate in and Leif did not get that last season with Clarke (when he played) filling that left wing space and therefore attracting the oppostion right back. Coming inside makes sense especially as first half we were not operating with a 10 so there was space there to exploit. Aberdeen never got to grips with our first half formation. I am not sure that it will work against better Championship teams as we are leaving a big old hole behind them and currently do not have a savvy left sided midfielder like Luongo to cover behind. Leif and Philogene seem to be more on the sme page than Leif and Clarke last season, though the challenges then were much higher than what Aberdeen and Linz could muster.

I was one of those and I never said for a second he couldn’t play a different role. The original suggestion was that he could play the Luongo CM role which I still think is a ridiculous shout. He’s still a LB but last night his forward runs were underlapping rather than overlapping.

Being a regular reader (and contributor) of this forum I am yet to be convinced that 'we fans' have any idea about football! [Post edited 26 Jul 16:40]

I get where you're coming from. However the fact our left back has been our most dangerous attacking outlet was actually a slight issue. Of course him still being a threat and involved is key. But if by him roaming it creates things for others, it's a welcome addition

He didn't play CM like you suggested and his biggest asset isn't his fitness (though he has outstanding fitness). Taking how he played yesterday as some sort of win for what you suggested (he becomes a CM is wild!!). He played LB as others replied to you. Was mad just how much he got forward though often finding himself as high up as a 10. Played inside and outside of Philogene. It was an evolution of how he played for us first season in the champ. Philogene staying wider meant he and Leif interchanged.

Be careful for thinking that he can be nothing other than a marauding left back. You must think like all the others and must not have your own opinion. Some on here have 1984 on loop and love to be 'controlled' by the man. Frimmers you must be very careful for using your own eyes and brain. If it goes against the norm it will be frowned upon. Right up to the point when they realise that hey these alternatives might actually work. Just joking folks. Enjoy your football, sometimes it is even fun. :)

I wouldn't go as far as saying playing a 10 or a cm tho. But being able to utilise him in different ways is great whilst maintaining his use as a wingback. It'll be interesting to see how it goes through the season. It must be a headache for defenders and wingers of opponents to know who to mark and when.
