… £20m offer in to Middlesbrough for him and we are offering £35k a week to Hackney himself.

Edit - also mentions that whilst he is yet to be tempted by the offer as he wants a Prem move, but no Prem club is offering what we are in terms of fee and wages.

I imagine we've issued a deadline (end of the week?) which has prompted the last push to draw out any genuine PL interest.

Funnily enough, ITKers at Boro end are saying that he's due here for a medical on Friday...

£22m + sell-on fee agreed (so they say).

Imagine that number has been inflated a bit but can see why PL clubs wouldn't be interested at a figure in that sort of range. £20m gets you an experienced, proven international with a couple of hundred top tier games under their belt from abroad.

Have you heard a figure, Phil?

Which clubs at this level are paying £8m for a 27 year old?

If Hirst has a good season, he'd be worth more than that...

Unlikely to see him in Auxerre if that is the case.

Surely we would want him to get some minutes there.

I wouldn't be surprised if it is £22m personally. It's the same fee as Philogene. With both being Eng U21s, you could put them in a similar bracket market value-wise.

We've probably had to bid a little over market value too to ward off PL suitors.

With add-ons, if we get promoted etc maybe that is the total maximum fee?

George will still have 3 years left of his contract at that point, though, so the comparison is apples and oranges.

To be fair, that's all their summer transfer talk in one thread. I'd imagine if we collated all our transfer threads into one thread, it would be of a similar size. It does make it hard to follow, though!

If true it's a lot when Palace got Wharton for 17million 18 months ago and Wharton is a much better player.

Very different context though. They weren't selling to a divisional rival, and prices seem to have inflated again over the last 18 months, especially for young English talent (see us turning down £35m for Hutch, for example). If we think he's the right player then I'd rather we pay £22m for him than £17m for someone who we don't think has the same potential to succeed here.

Hackney is a phenomenal player though. A different type to Wharton, who is perhaps more 'Prem ready' is terms of his physicality which I think may be why PL interest hasn't firmed up at the numbers being talked about.

As Herb said, the extra £4-5m on top is probably the premium we've had to pay to lock him down. I'd heard Palace and Everton have been negotiating quite hard for Hackney, but both were trying to lowball Boro in the £14-£15m region. (Palace probably using Wharton as a benchmark).

We've effectively bullied them out of the conversation, but it's been Boro's prerogative to try and get either of them to match/better our offer in the last week or so.

I think Hackney is probably further ahead physically than Wharton was when he left Blackburn tbh.

There's a tiny "worry" towards the back of my mind - would a Brentford / Brighton / Sunderland be sourcing an equivalent talent overseas for half the price? - but I don't recall watching him much and there's a lot of excitement from more informed posters. 🤞 this gets over the line asap.

To be fair, we've already signed Matusiwa for under £10m which looks a good bit of business. We need a bit of Championship experience alongside him though, not sure that starting a new CM pairing that has never played English football before would be the ideal way to approach a season where we're hoping to get promoted.

Hackney has a ridiculously high ceiling. Has nearly 100 champ games under his belt as well, which we really need in midfield imo.

I think he is the best player in the championship on the ball. The stats back it up as well. Would be a helluva Coup.

I'm less convinced by the need to have players who have lived the league tbh - think it's more important to have players who have lived or exceeded the standard of the league. And I'm sure good Champ experience could have been acquired for a sum less than that being reported aha.

We must have identified a player we believe will go on to have a good PL career, for this kind of money. Hopefully we get him over the line quickly and there's a chance he may be involved next Friday.

For sure we'll think he has Prem potential. I doubt we'd look at spending this much if we thought the Championship was his ceiling. Have to agree to disagree on the value of experience, whether it's the Championship or the Prem. English football is incredibly physical and fast paced so having a CM partnership with no previous minutes in English football would worry me.

I said as much on here re. experience, in the lead up to last season. That didn't go so well, and many of our failings last season were down to players not being savvy enough.

How many times did we get turned over towards the end of games last year? Also, how many times did a team take the lead and then just suck all momentum out of a game? Our game management was rather woeful last year and definitely cost us a few points.

I have 100% changed my tone on how much experience plays a factor.

So many conflicting stories. Phil saying it’s as good as done club side, boro journalists saying there’s no deal yet and he could still be holding out. We need clarity from somewhere.

I suspect Boro are saying that privately to make it appear they're doing everything they can to hold onto him.
