Have to say when I was seeing figures of £22m to Boro I was thinking, yikes, that’s getting a little bit silly for a Championship club.
But I think £12m + add ons is at the top end of where we should be paying in the Championship, and I’m comfortable with that for our ‘stellar signing’ like Hackney.

22 million compared to a younger and better prospect in Wharton (17million) 18 months ago was my yardstick I felt that it was too top heavy. |  | | |

Agreed, added in that Wharton went to a Premier League club as well.
Looking at other business carried out so far this window as well of similar profile:
- Sean Longstaff > £11m to Leeds
- Tommy Doyle > loan to Birmingham
- Taylor Gardner-Hickman > £1.5m to Birmingham
- Gustavo Puerta > £2m to Hull
- Jacob Wright > £2m to Norwich
- Wouter Burger > £3.5m to Hoffenheim
It felt like £22m was a really high premium, and we probably do have to pay a premium, being a parachute club, and looking for really talented young English talent, but there is always a tipping point.

Ultimately you can only sell for what someone is willing to pay.
PL clubs have had ample time to come sniffing for Hackney, not just this window, and whilst there has been noise around him for a while, there never has seemed to have been anything close with a PL club.
Beyond PL, on the domestic scene, we are probably one of the very very few clubs who could pay a fee anywhere near what Boro would want - that may leverage us in a good position with only 2 weeks to the season left. [Post edited 29 Jul 23:08]

For Phil to have posted that there must have been some kind of green light from the club as the noise quickly translated onto the Boro forum so assume we think there is a lower risk of another club coming in. Having said that if somewhere nearer £15M rather than £22M was the real fee, Boro would have told 'interested' PL clubs what they need to match our offer.
