Just for a bit of fun as my feeling is Hackney will stay at Borough who from memory has turned us down after agreeing deal.

Going way back, Pat Jennings

Think that was the other way around, he wanted to stay living near London and Sir Bobby didn't like the idea. Shilts turned us down around the same time as his move to Forest was already progressing.

Did Jeffers ever agree a deal? I thought he just decided not to sign after being on loan. Tho remember there was a period of uncertainty (or vain hope).

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

Yep thats how I remember it.
The tawt actually signed and then reneged on it.
No idea what compensation we got.

Crook's contract at Norwich had expired. He signed for Town (the only other club he talked to was Peterborough as his wife didn't want to move house. On the very day, Mike Walker returned to Norwich as manager & explained to him that they'd found a loophole as Norwich still held his registration & persuaded Crook to change his mind. Understandably, Town kicked off about this & I believe we may have been paid some small compensation.

Crook signed for us, but asked us to post-date the contract by a week or two so he could get his full wages from Norwich.

He then went back to them and told them what he’d done, so they offered him an improved deal which he signed and was dated the correct date.

When it went to the Football League for investigation, the Norwich contract was deemed to be be the one he had signed first and therefore was the valid one.

We would never have signed Shilton as his wage demands were so high, partly to fund his gambling. Jennings did nearly happen & he would have been a great signing.

We could go back in for him now. He can smoke out back with Ashley Young.

We were close to signing Seamus Coleman until Everton came in for him.

At the same time I think we nearly signed a left midfielder from South America- can’t remember his name but possibly from Venezuela. Don’t think we could get a work permit for him but he went on to play for Celtic - and have a good career with them.

Wasn’t it the legendary £20,000. Jennings wanted that as his signing on fee, Sir Bob thought he meant net which would have meant a gross (nearly)£100,000 at the time. Jennings said in his autobiography he just wanted £20000 gross.

On another issue, he was following my car up Tottenham High Road in his nice Daimler. My nephew waved through our back window, Pat waved back. I have never seen such an enormous hand!

I've not heard that. I can't remember where the info about him not wanting to move location came from, one of the players or staff from that time, though.

Jennings said that he was all set to join Town in the summer of 1977, but then Trevor Whymark broke a leg so we wanted to recruit a forward instead. We were well enough stocked with forwards with Geddis coming through so we sold Keith Bertschin to Birmingham for £135,000. Whymark did get injured in pre season & missed the start of the season, so there may be something in it.

Yes and no. Came down and had conversations but we couldn't get a deal agreed and Sunderland phoned and offered what he wanted and that was that.

We should have got that deal done but he didn't pull out, nothing got agreed, were being too tight

Weren't we waiting for a fee from Man City for Tony Vaughan?

Jon Samells, Alan Birchenall - both went to Leicester instead (Birchenall told me that Jimmy Bloomfield was more persuasive than the young SBR). Rudd Gullitt came for a look, but we had our quota of overseas players (Muhren and Thyson). Paul Gascoigne came as a youngster but didn’t sign.
On the other hand, Beattie was supposed to sign for Liverpool but nobody met him at the station so he came to us instead. Mariner was very close to signing for WHU. Ron Greenwood was apparently hacked off at SBR for stealing him. Swings and roundabouts!

Yes, we had agreed the fee with Watford & the contract with Phillips. But we couldn't commit to the deal until the tribunal said how much Man City had to pay us for Tony Vaughan, which turned out to be £1.35m. Phillips cost Sunderland only £325,000 up front, plus add-ons.

We missed out on Jon Sammels twice. He was born in Ipswich, lived in Grundisburgh and went to Farlingaye school in Woodbridge. At 16 years old he was picked up by Arsenal.

Shola Ameobi … super Jim wanted him but I think it was the medical that turned him down rather than the player who was up for it.

Thought we couldn’t agree a few with Watford, so Sheepy said we’d go to a tribunal.

Only problem was we were already going to tribunal for the sale of Tony Vaughan to Man City, and the League rules were such that you could only have one tribunal pending at a time.
As soon as Phillips left ITFC grounds, his agent called him to say Sunderland had agreed a fee with Watford and he drove straight there from us.

He could have at least mentioned to Andy Carroll that it’s not that far a drive.

Kevin Phillips was very close to signing wasn't he?

Mum understanding was we couldn’t agree a fee and Sheepy wasn’t prepared to risk the transfer panel setting a fee higher than we were prepared to pay.

it was only the matter of 50 grand they were haggling over. But if we had bought him. DJ and possibly Marcus Stewart might never have joined the club.

Sean Derry. That was basically a done deal, Keane was fuming.

That was a big loss, not a great player but would have provided the leadership and heart and glued the team together
