£10 million for Nathan Broadhead 13:05 - Aug 14 with 4505 viewsLibero

We've absolutely pulled Wrexham's pants down.

Not only is he available for free next season but despite being an incredibly gifted footballer and goalscorer, he has to be managed *very* carefully.
In our promotion season he never played two games in a week, he very rarely completes 90 minutes.

We're a long way from the 'soft touch' that Ashton describes as us being when he stole Adam Webster from us for a pittance on behalf of Bristol City.

It's a very good deal but he was also our joint top scorer the season we got promoted! I'm sure that is something that Wrexham will be taking into consideration with the fee they are paying.

the didsy effect will take hold this season though and he'll play every game! Still a good deal though.

Does he actually need managing *very* carefully, or is that the way we've just done it?

As for rarely completing 90 minutes, that's more down to McKenna's preferred way of utilising substitutes.

When Didzy left us, it was said he wasn't able to play too many consecutive games, but then has played majority of the games he was available for ever since.

I'm not sure we can be talking about having clubs pants down, we've had our own pulled a couple of times in the last 12/18 months.

Seems unlikely - Broadhead lives up the road from me just outside Stowmarket, he isn't travelling miles and miles everyday like David McGoldrick did.

Judging by his injury record, yes.

Have we? Care to give us an example?

We've paid pretty fair market value on all our purchases - even Muric who ultimately was a failure, was a reasonable price at the time.

It is, but its poker chips really isn't it. When we're spending £8m - £10m on Szmodics, Muric, Ogbene I don't think its much of a stretch to say Broadhead should be in that range.

Obviously the contract situation makes it a deal that really needed doing.

Does he need managing that carefully?

After signing in Jan 23, he started 17 of 20 games and came on as a sub in 2 others. He only missed Cheltenham away through injury.

23/24 he started 30 of 46 league games, and subbed on in another 8. In total he missed 6 games through injury.

It'll cost more than £10M to adequately replace him though

Hmmm, I get you, he's of equal quality to the names mentioned, for sure - it's the fact he's got this physical fragility that makes the deal impressive to me.

Selling a player who's post 25, who can't play two games in a week, for £10 million?
How very un-Ipswich, I love it.

I'm simultaneously distraught that he's leaving and also incredibly impressed and delighted at the deal we've got for him

Yes. Look closer. He can't play two games a week and is regularly protected by being one of the first changes.
I'm pretty sure Kieran has even referenced it prior in the promotion season? Someone else may be able to recall more accurately.

He only played just over half the available minutes in 2023/24 though. He ended up playing fewer minutes than Omari, who made way less starts than Broadhead. He's a good player but Libs is right that you have to manage his game time very carefully.

Its just another snide dig at the club without having much foundation.

Certain posters thrive on it

I've avoided this place for a week or so, I said before the Birmingham match that I thought that anything less than a perfect start to the season and it could get a bit toxic and lord, hasn't it just?!

I've seen people online questioning Kieran McKenna and suggesting he is fighting for his job lol. It's honestly wild.

At least its £10M more towards a replacement as opposed to precisely zero towards a replacement in 12 months time. Luckily the club see the bigger picture

100% this !

Im fully expecting Broady to be pivotal for Wrexham ... and quite likely to score against us
( he will wont he !)

Were any of those examples you gave in the final 12 months of their contract? Genuine question, I don't know the answer, but if not, you're comparing apples to oranges.

A lot of our attackers rarely compelted 90 minutes due to our starters and finishers substitutions and he often played 2 games in a week

He was sometimes sub for 1 and started the other, but that was less often than him starting them both, only missed 6 games through injury the whole season

I don't think they were, Ogbene was only at Luton a year so presumably he wasn't. Szmodics signed a new deal not too long before we signed him IIRC.

I'm not questioning the deal at all, it absolutely is one that needed doing with the contract situation and there's no doubt that plays a big part in the valuation.

The point was more that its ultimately a balance between £ and quality of playing squad. When all is said and done if we're spending £8m - £10m on players of that ilk and receiving similar for those of Broady's there's an element of poker chips about it.

Hear hear, he belongs in that bracket as a minimum imo. Awesome deal for us because of his contract expiry date and because of the manager's hierarchy, not so much from a purely 'player's worth' standpoint when compared with our own purchases.
