We will be fine 18:50 - Aug 17 with 1387 viewsSomethingBlue

That's the sense I have after today. Couple of really nasty bullets dodged, with our squad as thin as it could possibly be, and a clear uptick in performance. Casual logic suggested Saints, rather than us, would push on in the last 20 minutes today but we looked fit and spirited. We know what needs doing in the next fortnight and if the club can accomplish it then I feel good about the season.

Matusiwa looked far more up with the pace today, clear what he brings and that'll shine through further with a more reliable midfield partner. No slight on Taylor, a lot of what he contributes is pretty good and I'd keep him around, but you don't always know what's coming next.

Really good shift from Philogene, I hope the next step is that we see him able to contribute with numbers in the opposition box. Positive moments from Jack Clarke but still feel we need more and the right side of him/Johnson doesn't really work. Ogbene struggles to beat a man but at least his direct threat had them backing off in the final stages and almost created us something.

Personally I'd find a starting space for Chaplin every time at the moment. Szmodics did admirably though and was key to our very fast start.

Goes without saying that we need proper, competitive backup to Hirst, who ran himself into the ground out there. With the Ali and Azon situations it's becoming absolutely comical that for whatever reason we can't get this sorted. I trust we won't be talking about this in a fortnight.

Weird refereeing – I counted probably six yellow card offences for Armstrong, but Matusiwa gets booked for one maybe-foul.

That was a good game today – intense, good tempo, decent teams. Should stand us in great stead and we'll only get better than this.

I was trying to get reliable reception while out and about so missed chunks, but from what I saw we looked a bit more like our old selves. We won’t get many tougher games than the last two, so yes I think we’ll be ok.

Poll: Do you think Pert is key to all of this?

Agreed - think we were in danger of having such an awful start that the baby was thrown out with the bathwater and instead we’ve shown that we are more than competitive against our promotion rivals even in a period of relative turmoil.

Everyone in the ground knows the areas we need to improve and it looks like efforts are well afoot to fix them. Big few weeks but positive signs.

What is with this Azón thing, is this the second guy this season to rock up and say Yeah nah you’re alright thanks

Think the owners might be wanting more than just ok.

The failed medical element is true but our luck is definitely not good recruitment-wise atm ...

probably our 2 toughest opponents. for a 100 point season, the par score for those 2 is zero points, so we're already 2 up (or down, golf is weird!)

we need 6 points from the next 2 to maintain that though

Absolutely heinous start - arguably the trickiest away match and trickiest home match in our first two games.

Coming away unbeaten, especially in the circumstances, is a good outcome, made even better by the improvement shown today against Soton.

You ain't a beauty but, hey, you're alright.

Think we have a good chance of signing the Norwegian lad? Not that he’ll be vying with Hirst, mind.

Poll: We’ve got super KM, he knows exactly what we need. Woolfie at the back…

We may have got ahead of PL teams who see him as a nice-to-have/development project once they've finished their main business. Let's hope so, absolutely massive potential upside to that one.

From the snippets I’ve seen he’s a real talent, and very much in the Omari mould, albeit a little less pace. Hopefully one we can get over the line … seemingly pushing PSV out of the running is a good start.

Defo, we’ll avoid the drop for sure all being well.

Depends what the parameter for ‘we’ll be fine’ is.

A much improved display from last week, but still lots of work to do. We will want to be competing for the very top end spots, and I’m not sure we look capable of that currently.

As KMc said, it’s a new group, still lots of settlement to be done, finding some consistency to that front line is key for me.

Brum was a bit of a shock for everyone. A lot of people dismissed them and there were quite a lot of comments about how poor they were in the night. They did look to have a mistake in them at the back and they didn’t cause us too many problems around our goal. But their energy, desire and closing down were absolutely top drawer. As good as you’ll see in the Championship. That was a lot harder game than many realise imo.I wouldn’t be surprised if we’ve just played 2 of the top 3 or 4 come the end of the season.

That must be incredibly rare/unfortunate. You can pass medicals while carrying pretty severe injuries. So this must be something they think is a long-term issue.
