For the bed wetters out there 21:34 - Aug 23 with 1149 viewsFelixBlue4

Just my opinion but I don’t think we have become a bad team over night. The thing that got us to the elite table was team work, it was never about outstanding players that were wanted by other teams. Now the only way we will stay at the top table is player progression/turn over. This means the favourites do have to move on. Just imagine if these players can work as well as a team then we will be unstoppable in this league. There is no doubt individually we have better players than we had 2 years ago, the idea being that you bring in better players and your first team becomes the support act and so forth. It is how the bigger teams do it, some of our better players have been sold some people don’t like it but that is where we are as a club for a long time always trying to balance the books. The reality is it might not be the season for us this time but we need to stay strong.

No, not over night, it's been 12 months.

Worth noting that its a completely different team. So not really a matter of the team we had becoming bad overnight. We have yet to see if this team can build the patterns and reactions needed to succeed.

It's a slightly different mix, but a lot of the starting XI have been in the building a long time.

Most teams have change each season.

This 'new team' excuse doesn't really wash.

It really hasnt. Even the back 4 has not often played together much. Midfield is a new pairing. The attacking players are largely new, or working with new partners. How often has sammie played 10? Not often. etc etc

Cheers. Disagree. This lot are mostly bang average, too expensive, lightweight and overpaid.

I like Cajuste, Chaplin, Palmer, O'Shea, Davis and Hirst. Need about 6 more like them.

3 of the back four has played loads of matches together.

None of todays front four is new.

It's such a poor excuse, but feel free to use it if it makes you feel better.

Greaves was dropped for a better player. None have played with this midfield (crucial for connecting and playing out). The right back isnt up to it and hasnt even played therefore us that often.

Feels like Southampton and Leicester have had more managers than we’ve had CB pairings. Fed up with this excuse driven narrative. Look at Burnley how many players they lost last summer and their instant points return. It’s just not good enough.

We’ve won two home games since Sarmiento scored that last minute winner against Southampton. That was April 2024. Hardly over night.

You're right, it's definitely not overnight, its been 12 months of systematically ripping up the team, spirit and mentality that brought us success. I don't think McKenna actually appreciates how special that group of players was. We've replaced them with players who may be much better technically and individually but they're lightweight and bottlers who don't have a winning mentality and certainly don't know what they're doing collectively.

They've been in the building but they weren't playing together and that's the key.

Johnson/ Young --> Clarke/ Ogbene/ McAteer - Every combo a new partnership
Davis --> Philogene - New partnership
Matusiwa --> Taylor - New partnership
O'Shea & Greaves --> Matusiwa & Taylor - New partnership

Everywhere you look there is new partnerships being formed, it will just take a little bit of time to get to the slick operation that we were in 23/24 IMO.

That was near enough the peak. Maybe the day promotion was confirmed arguably or cov away but that Sarmiento moment was the peak. It’s all downhill since. And we won’t ever get back to that level of happiness.

You have a tiny germ of a point about partnerships, but you are massively overegging it. If any of those players couldn't instinctively play together they wouldn't have made it to the pro game.

when did criticising a squad that cost best part of £150m for forgetting how to win a game become bedwetting. Why are we not allowed to critique, they are massively underperforming and for the most part have played plenty of games together. It doesn’t mean the wheels have fallen off, but clearly it’s not good enough.

I'm don't think I am at all. You're in a position where you're a team with 70% of the ball in yesterday's case. It's up to you to break down that low block and to do that you have to play fast and to do that effectively, you have to know what the other person is going to do and where they're going to be.

We do not currently have that, especially on the left and right. I presume you watched the game. Would you say that many if any showed the ability to instinctively connect?

I can't think of a single time any of those partnerships connected really effectively to create a good chance.
