No idea the veracity of this tweet, but it’s good news if true. It also makes sense doesn’t it? Bloke seems to be a town fan though not a journo

It's true, Norwegian media have reported it although not in direct connection to the proposed Egeli deal.

More likely to be Southampton that do it as they will need a Dibling replacement and have a few quid burning a hole in their pockets now

Oh absolutely we do, my point was that if anyone was likely to jump in it would be Southampton and not Brum. I’d wager we have more cash available however just due to sales even before parachute money.

It does feel like he’s got this window wrong doesn’t it? I’m not sure that fair, but in a way prior success and the way he’s talked has maybe set himself up for a potential fall here.

Likewise, we don’t know the involvement of McKenna. Has he struggled to identify if he wants targets he doesn’t know from his time in academy/reserve football and coaching?

Got to judge it when the window closes in my opinion.

Incredibly frustrating that we’ve not been able to get our business done quicker, but it’s the nature of the beast unfortunately.

Yeah of course, but I don’t think it’s wrong to point out we’ve found the transition downward much harder than we anticipated. The fact we were relegated early enough to have must longer to prep doesn’t help either.

There's an argument maybe for doing away with the window in the Championship - I understand Premier League teams will come in and try to pick up the best of the Championship within their window too, but it would give clubs more free reign to make suitable additions after subsequently losing their top assets.

Yes, but the transfer window is just one part of that transition, and because there will be an internal balancing of bid timing for players up and down our priority lists, it's just a simple fact that we can't make any call on the transfer window in the context of the period for which its outcome is going to be relevant (i.e. this season, or this season up until January).

If we're all getting frustrated that we haven't signed player B yet, but the reason is that if we do we won't be able to sign player A (who is better for us, and who we are pretty sure we can sign), but we also know that player B wants to come here and we're maintaining dialogue with him and he knows the situation and we can push the button a few days before the end of the window, then externally we're frustrated but inside the club it's all Kool & The Gang.

So I think any transfer judgements on the part of external supporters have to be very mild at most and are relevant only in the context of the first three or four games of a long season.

Needs to also be revisited when the next one opens.

As an example, the last January in League 1 seemed good on paper but didn't yield much in Jan itself. 2 weeks after it closed and there was the infamous draw at Bristol, plenty were thinking the autos were gone and we needed to prepare for the play-offs. However by the end of the year it was the original Ashton Masterclass!

I'm not sure he has got it wrong generally. In some ways, it should be easy to recruit as a parachute club but it must be so hard trying to navigate a transfer window when you want to recruit as a PL club in the Championship and you have various moving parts. I can't help but think he thought he had this deal closer to being over the line than it was when we sanctioned the Omari move though.

Feels like we have missed out on several ambitious targets and he needs to land this one given it seems Egeli is keen on the move.

The trouble with judging a transfer window before it is shut, is that it is not designed for instant returns but to deliver success against the overall aims which is surely promotion?

I really don't understand the need for immediate judgement - we may struggle through Sept / Oct as players settle but stay in touch with the top 6, then things click, the signings gel and we go on a 25 game unbeaten run which puts us top and gets us promoted - that would suggest the window is a success - we just don't know now . . .

Any judgement talking about a poor window in August is premature before the manager has time to fully settle the squad and build on it's skills.

Finally, before anyone starts on the "we have had months to prepare for this etc", yes, we have known that we would be playing Champ footy probably since February, but knowing this vs the players you want to sign being available, getting deals ageed and players in are two very different things.

Dammit - didn't want to get drawn into another transfer thread but this one suckered me in . . . .

As I understand it (from my numerous sources), personal terms agreed, medical completed, transfer dependent upon Egeli being available for selection whilst replacement sourced.
They need the cash to be able to confirm a purchase of a replacement and there was some degree of friction over the amount being paid upfront. Huge add ons reduce the upfront payment (which is still significant)

I wouldn't say the window has been bad.

Cajuste, Akpom and Young are cracking signings at this level. Matusiwa seems good. Kipre and McAteer look useful from their brief appearances so far.

We got decent money for Delap, very good fees for Hutchinson and Broadhead. Two of those were always more likely than not to be off this window.

Losing Tuanzebe and Burgess was disappointing, but neither surprising. The former wanted to stay in the Prem and the latter was falling down the pecking order at RCB. Last season there were many comments that Morsy was looking less mobile and capable than he had been, so it shouldn't have been a surprise when he was off, too.

As I said in another thread, the issue is less personnel than how well the team is functioning. Which is McKenna's department, not Ashton's.

It's all very well for people to keep on about how "we should have done our business early", but everyone knows that's pie in the sky. Always has been, since transfer windows were introduced. A large proportion of the business happens at the very end, even on deadline day itself. Players and clubs don't want to make up their minds too early, there is almost always the chance of better options or more money coming along.

Pressure from who? Most of us had never heard of him until a few days ago. Every deal has got to be right for the player and the club. I’m sure if we offered a high enough transfer fee and were willing to pay what he wanted, he’d sign. If the fee is too high, the contract terms aren’t right for the club or if the medical identifies a problem the club can’t just go through with completing a deal regardless.

Nail on head Mullet. He talked back in April as though they knew exactly what they wanted, and that we'd be aiming high. Trouble is that thus far he's under delivered. He raised expectations too high - big mistake. Hes got time to redeem it! but sometimes he needs to keep quiet and not over egg things.
Plus we have lost the togetherness of that Lg1 team he put together. Thats not surprising, it was very, very special - but the owners and Ashton pulled out all the stops to give a fresh sense of purpose and direction. The links with the LA fire brigade, the fire disfigured motivational guy, the visibility and comments of the owners - we're lacki g all tbat this time round.
I think the squad and McKenna is too good to struggle for a whole season - but its frustrating and disappointing just now.

Time for prep is all very well, but we are not allowed to actually kick off the process of approaching clubs/players until the same time as everyone else (excepting those in the final months of contracts).

All it means is we have a well-constructed list. It doesn't give any head-start in actual negotiations. Nor does it hurry up decisions to let a player go, or that player's decisionmaking. It certainly doesn't make ambitious targets any more available.

In addition, we don't know all of our own players who might get approached and thus what gaps need to be filled.

Having a long time to think about things is not necessarily the advantage people think it is. Things are ready to start, yes. But it doesn't make the process itself go any quicker and that depends upon other parties, not just our readiness.

I do think that Ashton may have given too many hostages to fortune with bullish talk, raising unjustified expectations. But perhaps that's just who he is - and it has delivered pretty good results since he arrived.

Theoretically, a medical could be done anywhere, so long as the club trusts the doctors and facilities doing it - or we could send people out to Denmark.

He was the Omari replacement so I'd like to think a deal was agreed before we let him leave. This is where the pressure comes from for me. I am very hopeful it gets done but the plan can't have been for us to waiting on him over 2 weeks after Omari left.
