Bad morning, so thought I would get myself something nice for lunch so popped out to Tesco. About 10 Union flags have appeared overnight on one of the main drags into Cheltenham halfway up the lampposts.
Now I've no problem with patriotism, I think we should display more flags, if only to wrestle them back from the right. But, we all know this is nothing to do with patriotism.
They were all those cheap £2.50 flags you get from Sports Direct, which with the forecast this week will have them in tatters with running colours by the weekend, if that isn't patriotic enough for you, about 6 of the 10 were being flown upside down.
Some moron has tried to make George crosses on lots of local zebra crossings etc with scruffy red paint or marker. Makes a decent neighborhood look like a scruffy shytehole, regardless of the flag issue. It is vandalism and needs a strong response.
Most aren't even straight. Looks like a child has done an inverted danish flag. Wazzocks.
Nothing says patriotism more than painting a (wonky) Red Cross on the white boxes on zebra crossing so thousands of people can walk all over them
Civil war is coming Chelts. Just make sure you have lots of tinned food and stuff. I've said for 2 years that the English uprising is coming. The left is cheesed off, the right is cheesed off and the middle is almost cheesed off. Its coming and Mr Starmer is very afraid of it. He tried to stop it last year by arresting people for "shouting at horses". People are mad.
In this English civil war/ uprising, who will make up the 2 separate factions? Just so I can choose a side
I just don't get the point. The council is going to remove them or paint over them, and then they're going to get performatively mad.
Just stick them up outside your house or out your window or whatever. Hell, have dozens of the things, nobody cares.
At what cost, to the council, and the council taxpayer would it be to send their teams out to paint over them? Will that mean extra council tax increases next year would be likely that those doing it will then moan about?
In this English civil war/ uprising, who will make up the 2 separate factions? Just so I can choose a side
There's even a song about it.
"The lyrics, passionately delivered by Joe Strummer, discuss the band's fears about the rise of the National Front and radical, fascist far-right-wing politics in the UK, and fears that this will cause tensions and riots on the streets. In a discussion with Terry Lott of Record Mirror magazine after the song's live debut at the April 1978 Rock Against Racism festival in Victoria Park, Joe Strummer speculated that "War is just around the corner. Johnny hasn't got far to march. That's why he's coming by bus or underground (referencing part of the lyrics)."
My favourite urban legend at the moment is the talk of the 'lad down the pub' who's been going round at night collecting up flags and selling them back to the people who hung them in the first place.
Oh no, its an urban legend?! Gutted!
(A sh1t ton of flags on the way down to hastings area yesterday. If only these people wouñf spend so much energy on getting a job)
Has anyone ever looked at their own postings for last day or so? Oh my... so sorry. Was Ullaa
All the far right direction etc and weird anger it seems to generate is a worry. The fact it looks so bad, limp flags, wonky lines etc is almost as insulting as the idea of people trampling or driving over the flag on roundabouts and crossings.
It’s actually pretty insulting.
I know Americans have this weird fetish for sticking their flag on everything despite the laws and convention saying it’s an insult, but the way these lot are copying that and thinking it shows them as better is tragicomic.
Can’t wait for the bill to come in and we all have to pay. Community service for a long period would be a fitting punishment. Those so proud in their communities litterpicking, painting and working at food banks might do a world of good in opening their eyes a little.
